Diet and migraines (or TIA)

by Jaquta, Sep 25, 2009 02:54AM
Can dehydration, food allergies (?soy) or too few calories trigger migraines?
I had issues last week with vision and slurred speech.  Doctors were querying a 'mini stroke' or migraine.

I'm a little apprehensive of symptoms returning or they being precursors to a stroke.  Are there preventative measures I could be taking?  (My GP has insisted I exercise for a minimum of 20 minutes each day.  It was only three times the week before before this happened.  Should I be concerned?  I have been trying to make dietary changes due to recently diagnosed anemia.  I have lost nearly six kilo's in the past three weeks through diet and exercise.  In general I am probably feeling a little better.)

Thanks for your time and any feedback.

Some migraine triggers may include

Chocolate
Alcohol
Caffeinated beverages
Nuts
Aged cheese
Processed meats (like bacon and sausage)
Foods containing MSG

Seems like a healthy diet will help keep the migraines away!

Thanks!  I expect it was just a migraine (easy enough to say now after some distance from the event).  I did have a low-fat ice-cream an hour earlier which incidentally did have a tiny bit of chocolate in it.  Or it could equally have been from stress.
There was other stuff too but no one has said either way so I guess it's OK to assume that it was the lesser of the two possibilities.

I mentioned ages ago about getting chest pain and short of breath with exercise, etc.  The chest pains have resolved with iron supplements.

I have been eating healthier although I still have a long way to go especially before the behaviors become second nature.  I have had a lifetime of poor eating habits (unhealthy in some respect) so I am trying to be patient with myself and to not let my expectations, etc defeat me.  I am struggling a little with flexibility and I desperately hope I'm not about to sabotage everything I've achieved recently.
I think the difference this time has been having health concerns act as a motivator -which have been extremely powerful.  I'm hoping they will be enough to carry me through this difficult period at the moment.

Thanks for everything.
