'Excess Skin' after weight loss...

by Inishboy, Jun 07, 2009 04:32PM
Is there a natural way to lose that excess skin, or must you recieve some sort of surgery?

After someone has lost a significant amount of weight, a new issue can emerge when previously stretched skin has lost some of its elasticity and can sag uncomfortably.  A surgical approach is often recommended depending on how significant the problem is - this procedure is called a panniculectomy, in which excess fat and skin is removed.  An alternative procedure is an abdominoplasty, in which the abdominal muscles are tightened as well.  Surgery is usually the most effective option in these situations - sit-ups just don't do the trick!

Great to see you here!  Welcome!

I agree with Dr. Beckerman, if you lose a lot of weight, the sag can be pretty intolerable, and surgery can be very helpful!

Losing weight after pregnancy is difficult - I'm sure all new moms out there will agree.  This is a great opportunity to make some adjustments in how you approach food, drink, and activity/exercise.  I'm a huge proponent of the idea that small changes result in significant weight loss over a gradual period of time (Look for The Single Pound Solution in bookstores next spring for more on that!).  In the meantime, target small amounts of weight loss (one or two pounds weekly).  Start a food diary - every day.  Weigh yourself routinely and write it down. Begin a reasonable exercise regimen that you can maintain.  It's not easy, but it's a start. Let me know how things progress!
