Weight loss for Type 1 Diabetic

by gardener62, Jun 13, 2009 02:10PM
Most of the weight loss suggestions I see are for Type 2 diabetics.  I am a Type 2, now a type 1 on insulin.  I am 62 years old and have put on about 20 pounds that should belong to someone else.  I cannot seem to get my body to lose weight.  Where are the suggestions for Type 1s?

Gardener62, thanks for your post!  In general, the recommendations shouldn't be all that different.  Smaller portions and more frequent meals/snacks work for many people, and more exercise should work for everyone.  You might also talk to your doctor about the role medications could be playing in weight gain - some diabetic medications can play a role in this.  Also, be careful that you aren't replacing the sugar in your diet with high fat items like cheese or high fat dairy - look more towards lean meats and vegetables.  Take care.
