B12 injection question......how odd is this...

by teribelle, Oct 20, 2006 12:00AM
I was tested for B12 deficiency, I was 243. (for those who do not know the #'s, 'good docs' recommend you stay above 500 and 1000 is the best)
I took the injections once every 2 weeks (3 times) then once a month for 2 months. I was retested, it was 248...?! What in the world is wrong with this picture?
I have been on them, myself now, for 4 months and believe you me, I have given myself more than once a month. (You cannot OD on B12)   Still feel like &%$# and have not lost, still gaining.
For anyone who knows, why would my # not improve? I told my doc the new # and his response was "that is very strange" "I would suggest going to another lab"  ??????????WHAT!?
1ST of all, you cannot just walk into a lab without a docs referal, 2nd, I got another doc!
Thanks

If you are low on B12, you should start with a more frequent schedule of injections to start. Something to the effect of: 3 per week for 3 weeks, then 2 per week for 3 weeks and then 1 per week for a couple months. Then re-test. Also, testing methylmalonic acid (spelling?) is a better way to detect B12 levels in the blood. I hope this helps and I hope you are feeling better by now.
