Can give up food but not wine

by Cassie99, Jan 18, 2007 12:00AM
Hi, I am new to the group; I started yesterday with Phentermine and B12 injections.  I lost 5 lbs before I started the program by dieting and excercising the last 2 weeks, now I am looking to lose 60 lbs to reach my goal.  I have no problem giving up food especially now that I know phentermine will help me with my appetite but I was wondering, will drinking Wine completely ruin my diet?  My dr. said to take 1/2 phentermine at 9am the other 1/2 at 3pm, he has me at 1,500 calories a day and as many shots of B12 as I want, due to my schedule I can only go get them 3 times a week, I just started yesterday so I will see how it goes.  Also, I have been going to the gym everyday after work 40-45 min on the treadmill then 3 sets 40 reps each of leg crunches and 3 sets 12 reps arms with the pull bar and drinking lots of water.  Any other advice or suggestions?  This is all new to me.  Thank you :)

The good news is one glass of white is about 80 calories on average. Red is a bit higher at about 120 a glass. As long as you consider that in your 1500 calorie diet then there will be no problem.

The reason to limit alcohol calories when dieting is that they turn immediatly into glucose and can more easily be stored as fat. As long as you are staying at your calorie range though, one glass one wine (the "healthiest" of alcohols) will be fine. Enjoy it, use it as your treat for the day! Also, wine is filled with antioxidants and in moderation good for your health (remember the French Parodox findings?)

It sounds like you are on the right track. The diet and exercise sound great! You will reach you goals in no time. Make sure you have lots of support. I have to disagree.  According to my diet Dr, drinking alcohol can stop your body from burning fat for up to 48 hrs.  He reccommended stopping alcohol all together if possible.  If we had to drink, to try and do it only one day a week.  He even reccommended skipping the phen on that day - partly because it was wasted, and partly bacause of drug interactions.  He did say the best drink was a wine spritzer.

Well of course follow your GP's advice!

Drugs can interact with alcohol so that's a good thing to bring up with your doctor.

Wine Spritzers are the lowest in calories, but you mentioned wine so that's what I brought up. Also, champaigne is low in calories. Depends what your drink of choice is :)

So I suppose then check with your GP and see if they suggest you take alcohol with the pills, and if its ok then just keep it under the calories you decide on for the day!

Red wine may contain more calories than wine white but it is better for you then white as it contains more antioxidants which help prevent cancer, alzheimer's disease, parkinsons disease and aging.  Champagne and sparkling wine contain less calories than red or white wine.
