Hypothyroid,depression,weight gain

by EastCoastScrapper, Nov 10, 2005 12:00AM
I am hypothyroid, 39 yrs old, female, 220lbs live in VA.  Since being diagnosed with hypothyroidism 10 years ago and being on synthoid I have struggled with weight gain.  My eating habits have not changed that drastically.  I went from 150lbs over night.  I do feel depressed and don't excersize like I should.  I just don't have the get up and go.  I have my blood levels checked once a year but and I am due for it next month and it is always the same as far as the doctor is concerned.  I have just started feeling down the last couple of months.  I have a wonderful supportive husband and I don't want to risk losing him over this.  Please any sujestions for help would be wonderful.  I have joined a gym and went faithfully for 3 months and then my son started high school and I do a lot of running back and forth with him and just don't make time for myself.  Should I try the B12 shots, Topamax? Any helpful sujestions would be welcomed. Thanks

I wish I had more to offer - what I have is commisseration.  I've been on Synthroid since Oct last year, supposedly my blood levels are okay (I have Hashi's so they suppress my thyroid) but I've gained 20 pounds since May.  I feel so frustrated by this!  Like you, I feel I'm not eating so much that I'd gain 20 lbs!  I have read that Adrenal fatigue can be involved and i'm going to see a new Doctor inJanuary - maybe I'll have more to offer after that!  Hang in there.

For many years I was treated for hypothyroidism by a doctor who said everything was okay even though my test results were always at the low end of "normal".  I finally changed to a doctor who is more aggressive with her treatment, believing that patients should be in the upper end of the normal range.  I am now on a higher dosage of Synthroid and have my thyroid levels checked every 6 months.  My weight gain leveled off and now I am working on losing all those extra pounds.

I know how you feel.  I have only been diagnosed for around 1 1/2 yrs. now, but I have the constant battle with weight too.  They still haven't got my tsh leveled out yet, but the endo I see tells me that hypo DOES NOT cause you to gain weight.  I love it when I hear that!  But I have tried to limit my calories, walk 1 mile every day and I am down about 15 lbs now.  Keep in there, maybe they'll figure something out to help us sometime.
