Hi, Approximently how much does the Lap Band cost, I am from Canada so the cost may differ from the US cost. How overweight would someone have to be to qualify for the procedure? Thanks for reading Veronica

I checked into this because a friend of mine had it done-in Memphis, TN it would cost $18000.00 for everything-dr, lab, etc. and you either have to be 100 lbs overweight, have a BMI over 40, or if your BMI isn't over 40 you have to have some kind of health problems like diabetes, heart, etc.

I had LapBand surgeryin Mexico.  My doctor is a proctor for the maker of the band, Inamed.  He travels around the world training doctors how to perform the procedure.  He is one of the world's top 5 surgeons with the LapBand.  It costs less there and they have been performing the surgery for over 10 years, unlike here in the States.  At the time I had surgery it cost $8,500.  Best doctor, great hospital, and less money.

I think the comments about lapband costing $18,000 and having to be 100 pounds overweight etc. entered in March pertain to gastric bypass surgery, not lap band.  Lap band is much cheaper than the other surgery, and it is quicker, doesn't require overnight in a hospital, etc.  Check with any bariatric surgeon's office for more information.  Also, many hospitals in major cities have free support groups for information.
