Question about topamax

by Brea0802, Dec 25, 2006 12:00AM
hi i'm new to this site.  I just started topamax about 1 week ago just wondering how long it takes to start effecting weight loss?  I mean im on 100mg a day and i feel nothing no side effects nothing no weight loss no change in eating patterns.  Has this happened to anyone else?  If so will it eventually change or do i need to tell the doctor to change my dosage.

That is a good question to ask your Doctor.  Topamax is a serious medication, not only helps weightloss but is mainly for seizures and multiple migraines.  Please read all the information your drug store gave you on this medication.  Good Luck ! Happy New Year

Topomax made me stupid. I was prescribed topomax (topamax) and phentermine in a weightloss study. I was also a sophomore at university at the time. The phentermine was great, but the topomax (topamax), which I took in the afternoons made me forget words and phrases I wanted to use, ... you know, you just can't find the words for what you want to say.

I started Topamax about one month ago and about the 2nd week I noticed that all soda's tasted horrible.  This was actually good, because I have now stopped drinking soda, which was very hard for me.  I havenoticed that I'm not as hungry as often, but it also makes me very tired.

I had a good friend on Topomax (topamax) who lost a lot of weight.  She lost the weight because she had no appetite.  If your eating pattern is the same, you probably won't lose any weight.  I hope that's not the main reason you are taking the drug (I've heard some bad things about it).

anyone else still reading this? I am up to 75 mil. and not losing either although my mood is wonderful and I am a much happier person. Has anyone ever heard of this affect?

I take it for migraines - it's no surprise it would affect your mood it's used for seizures, bi-polar, and depression too. Maybe you had some anxiety, and the Topamax just took the edge off. I taken 200 mg. for quite a long time, haven't lost a pound, and it hasn't altered my appetite, but that's not what I'm taking it for - although I sure wouldn't mind losing weight!

Make sure to drink lots of water so you don't get kidney stones, and if you start to get one drink real lemonade with artificial sweetner to acidify your urine and break down the stone.

Good luck in your weight loss - I hope you reach your desired goal, and I'm so glad it's helping you with your mood - that's a major bonus!
