Topamax with Other Medication and Weight Loss

by erni, Nov 10, 2006 12:00AM
I have recently been prescribed Topamax for neuropathic pain (peripheral neuropathy). I have read SO MUCH regarding the uses of topo and its side effects. While I have not started taking topo yet, I am curious about the weight loss side effect. Within the past 2 years, I have gained 50lbs. I'm not certain of the cause... some of it might be alcohol related (which also caused the neuropathy_) However, I am now sober.. no more alcohol.

I am currently taking the following for my anxiety: 60 mg Buspar, ?? mg Celexa, 800 mg Seroquel (which I have read may cause weight gain). I have just started taking 50 mcg Synthroid for my recently diagnosed hypoactive thyroid. I have also recently been told I am hypoglycemic and should eat 5 small meals a day.

My questions is this: Has anyone else with the same or similiar medication experienced any weight loss? Is there anyone else out there with a similiar health profile that I can converse with regarding these issues?

While weight loss is NOT the primary reason I am going to take topamax, it would be an added benefit. I REALLY need it for the pain. I also need to let my psychiatrist know about the topamax because its being prescribed for mental health problems. I wonder what she will say.

Anyway, any help or insight is GREATLY appreciated. I have read through this forum and have finally decided to just ask if there is anyone who can relate to my situation.

Thanks again!
Erin

Thanks for the support regarding the alcohol. I was self-medicating myself for basically 10 years! I won't bore you with details about how it all started, but the medicine basically didn't work so I turned to what did. It even got to the point that I didn't want to drink...just had to to keep the shakes off. Now, after all this blood work I've had done, the shakes might have just been my low blood sugar and such.

I will check out that crazymeds website. Thanks for the direction! And THANK YOU for responding! It's nice to get feedback and know I'm not alone in here.

Take care,
Erin

hi, I look over old threads every once in a while and I just noticed this one. I don't know why I didn't see it the first time. I take Topamax to control seizures and I'm definitely not crazy about the side effects but I guess they have to be dealt with cause seizures are certainly worse!

I don't take much other meds except my weight loss stuff, an aspirin and a vitamin and I don't have much of any other medical condition except obesity and the seizures, so I don't know if I can help you much! But it looks like they kicked Booty off of here and I can sure let you know that you are not alone. I do take the same drug and have since April and am always glad to chat if you need anything. Take care - KK
