Topomax for weight loss

by jojogracie, Jul 23, 2008 04:45PM
My daughter starting taking topomax (topamax) for headaches/weight loss two days ago.  She takes 100 mg each morning for now.  Next week it increases to 100 mg am and 100 mg pm.  She says it makes her head feel really weird but says it is ok.  Her headaches were maybe a couple of migraines a month. She has began gaining alot of weight lately and he suggested we go on topomax (topamax) to treat both problems.  Today is her second day and this afternoon she has a bad headache?  Is this normal?  She can't really tell a difference in her apitite

I was on topomax (topamax) last Fall and it was for the same thing and to tell u the truth I went off because it had made my food&everything I drank taste bitter&I couldnt deal with.i was on for2months and didnt lose any weight i could keep off and it did cause weird feelings in my head and hallucinations.I havent been able2find anything4weightloss or migraine prevention.I think maybe why we get migraine is b/c we depend2much on meds&my best thing I been on to help occassionally on getting rid of migraine is fioricet.but is prescription&causes itching sometimes.Best bet is to try2stay away from any meds if you can,and try home remedies like heat&ice packs for migraine. All meds have side effects that can last4days&can get rebound headaches(that return shortly after headaches go away)that can feel worse.Hope this helps.

I just started taking topamax yesterday for the same reasons, but my dosage started much lower, 25 mg for one week then 50 then 75 then 100. maybe you should double check with the doctor about the dosage. It may be normal for her to get a headache because it will take a while for the medication to build up in her system and start working. Everyone is different, only 1/3 of people will see weight loss results, which means that 2/3 will see no weight loss. There are many side effects to this drug, and acting loopy is one of them. Some people have called it brain fog. Also some hair loss is normal and tingling of the hands and feet. Did your daughter's doctor discuss this with her? I'm willing to try it any way knowing the side effects because I can't take the migrains, and can not lose weight I gained from having my twins four years ago. I've had migrains since about 16 and I'm 36 now. Let me know how she makes out and I'll keep you posted on how I'm doing.
