Torn up inside due to weight gain

by Frogs2004, Jul 06, 2006 12:00AM
I'm all torn up inside about this serious weight gain I have experienced. I look at the pile of pants i have that i can't wear anymore and cry. I'm currently being treated for migraines, and am on a ton of meds (Topomax (topamax), Inderal, Alesse, Flexerile, Tramadol,) When the doctor put me on Inderal I gained aprox. 35 pounds in 2 weeks. I feel fat all the time, and can't seem to lose anything, i feel as if people stare at me when i go out in public, basically flat out depressed and don't know how to drop some of this weight, i went to my dr. and he told me to go exercise my butt off, although i have exercise induced asthma and its hard to get a good work out without feeling as if i'm gonna die. I'm 20 yrs old and weigh 220 pounds. I walk a lot every day, given up sugar, pop junk food fatty foods, and keep gaining the weight. Anyone got any ideas of what I can do??

It sounds like you did not have a weight problem before you started taking all these meds. It's ovbious what caused it because you only gained weight after taking it.  I'm not familiar with every drug you are taking but it may be that you are taking serotonin medications which when taken by themselves almost always make you gain weight.  Ask your doctor change your Meds or to add a norepinephrine - releasing agent to your meds.  I had a freind who gained 50 lbs on Paxil. She went to a different doctor and Once the meds were worked out - i'M NOT positive but I think her doctor took her off paxil and put her on another similar med but also added a weight loss drug like bontril or phentermine (I don't remember which) Anyway after that her weight came off the same way it went on.  If you did not have a weight problem before the meds it shoulf be the same for you.  If your doctor won't work with you get another doctor.  You don't want to wait until you have put on 50lbs.

I don't know in what order you started taking all the meds, but have you tried topomax (topamax) by itself? If it will treat your migraines sufficiently by itself, it is known to cause weight loss as a side effect.

I think you should talk to your doctor and try to let go of all that meds and look into colon cleansing because your body may have toxins go to drnatura.com

sorry about the migraines but I believe there is another solution, one that a medical doctor won't tell you about.  Try a very chiropractor.  Look them up in a phone book, search out one who also takes care of children.  They will take a scan and an x-ray.  The problem is that too many people don't believe that our nervous system really controls everything.  Your back  could be really messed up causing the migraines.  I will swear by my chiropractor.  He told me to give him 3 months and all my symptoms would diminish or completely be gone and he was absolutely right.  The easiest thing for a doctor to do in perscribe a pill that will work but the side effects are horrible.  We need to find the root of the problem with the migraines.  Please give it a serious try.  It can't hurt.  Especially for what your paying for meds.

For the person who had asked if i had tried only topomax (topamax) by its self. The answer to that is yes, my dr. has come to the conclusion that my hormones are unbalanced, and thats why i'm on the bc. I would have the migraine the week before my period and the week during into the week after. basically 3 weeks out of the month. I've tried chaning my meds, and even droping them, but they only get worse. The last migraine i had was back in April, since i've started all these meds. and the last migraine i had was horrible, was in the er 5 days out of the week for shots for a little relief which didn't help anyway. I went to my gyno yesterday and asked her about the weight gain, shes put me on HCTZ to help reduce water. Shes running blood tests to see if the thryoid is working right or now, and other tests to test levels of whatever they test. This is the first month I've had a period since all these meds, and i'm cramping so bad she gave me IB profin 800 which doesn't kill the pain either. I guess i could live with the cramps instead of a migraine for 3 weeks.

I know that I already posted on here but please guys try a chiropractor as well.  They are not frauds.  we need to find what is causing the problems.  I love to research so do some research on the web about chiropractors!  Please give it a try.  I do believe that we need both fields of medicine.

I think everyone is right, you should quit the meds its only making  you more fragile and not helping you at all. I think you should see another doctor, this one is only making your problem worse. I also have a problem with my weight. I am 160 cm tall and weigh 320 pounds. I cant deal with the diets anymore because Im not losing enough weight. I will have surgery to remove most of the excess pounds and then begin a diet to change my eating habits. I have thought about it too just like you, I cant face the people staring at me anymore. I developped Agoraphobia complex with time. I am going to jd healthcare clinic to undergo a liposuction. I will still have to be followed by the doctors after the operation to make sure that everything is going right. If you can afford liposuction then just do it. You will at least get a new start and it will be easier to go out and face people's stare without feeling out of place.

Hi everyone. I'm new here.  I too have gained ALOT of weight and I think it's due to the meds i'm on.  I am currently on disability for bipolar and fibromyalgia and GERD.  My meds are as follows:
celexa, lamictal, wellbutrin xl, cymbalta, restoril, seroquel, protonix and zelnorm. Also I was on Depo Provera for 17 months which really added to my weight gain.  I've been off this drug since December 05, still haven't gotten my period back and am still gaining weight. I also take pain meds when my fibro acts up.
I workout with a personal trainer and having been going to the gym 3-4 times a week for a month and really working out hard and i gained 10 more pounds.  I am now topping out at 240.  I have never come close to this weight in my life.  Before this my highest was 185 which now I would love to get back down to.
I  am now trying Nutrisystem and am praying it works.
I could really use some advice from people going through this.
I am 43, do you think I should go see my gyn to see if it's fluid retention, hormonal.  I've had my thyroid checked and it came back normal.  This is so upsetting and discouraging.
Please help.
Thanks

Hello everyone!

My first post here.  After reading the posts, I  can relate to the frustration and despair felt with increasing weight gain.  Mine too, has been steadily rising, despite the years of workouts and trying to eat healthily.  It all came to a head, 7 months ago, when I got a wisdom  tooth removed [impacted] which has resulted in 2 surgeries and countless prescriptions for antibiotics, which in turn, led to, you guessed, more weight gain.

So one day, I get a phone call from a chiropractic office, inviting me in for analysis in exchange for 2 cans of food [I had spent the day at the ER with breathing difficulties] and decided to give the chiro a try as I had a bout of backpain a few months earlier which lasted for `11 days - hang in there, I am getting to the point!

The point is, if your spine is subluxated [wonky!] and the nerves are trapped, then this leads to all kinds of illnesses and a general feeling of unwellness.  After one adjustment, I felt a release and could breathe easier, I have since been going for the last two months and feel so much more in tune with my body - the best thing is, no meds are prescribed, migraines can be taken away with an adjustment.

The next part of this story is the  discovery of a website called Dr.Natura, if you have the stomach enough to read through this website [and it is gross] you will find that you could possibly be carrying around up to 20lbs of impacted fecal matter in your intestines and that this must be released from your body for obvious reasons - if you take vitamins and supplements to nourish your body, you may, inadvertently be nourishing some other things inside you [told you it was gross] so a thorough cleansing is necessary in order for the body to lose weight.  It is day 6 for me, and this body of mine has lost 5lbs already!  I am ecstatic.

I believe through a combination of exercise, lots of water, no medications, colonic cleansing and chiropractic care, I am finally enabling my body to release this excess weight I have been carrying around for a very long time and it feels fantastic.

Hope this helps and thanks for listening.

I've had migraines for 22 years now and i'm only 39 years old.  I've tried all kinds of meds to help me.  After using Topamax for 6 years i noticed lots of changes.  So my doctor put me on Inderal.  I'm stopping the Inderal as i write and going back on Topamax.  I've gained 22lbs. in a matter of weeks.  Without the med i get 4 to 5 a week on the med i only get maybe 3 a month.  Have to go to another doctor though in the last 8 months I've lost 70% of my hair I'm so upset and they thought it could be from the Topamax that's one reason for the change.  I've had all kinds of testing done on me for the hair loss.  Also, 3 months ago I started to lactate again.  Had several blood tests done (prolactin levels, thyroid, adrenals, and pituatary all these checked and a mammogram)  all these came out normal.  The endrocranologist (I don't think I spelled it right) I will be seeing on July 9th they said they will do much more in depth testing on me.  Help if anyone has these issuses please.  My thoughts are meopause maybe?  Desparate of some answers i really want my hair to grow back and I have tried all kinds of hair care products.

I actually can totally relate to this as well. I look in the mirror and want to cry. I was at 130 pre-baby weight. and now I am over 200. I literally ate way too much when I was pregnant, but at the time, it was like I ate whenever I felt hungry and that was all the time I was pregnant. I have been working out at the gym alot now that I stopped breastfeeding and have more time ( for about 7 months) and have barely lost 20 pounds in all that time. Its very depressing. I cry alot in the shower so I know how you feel.

I had my thyroid tested, and the good news is, I am healthy for a fat girl. Bad news is, there is no cure for being the fat girl. I dont want to be a fat mom. Kids make fun of them and I dont want my child to be embarrassed of me.

I am thinking about doing the hcg thing. I couldnt take diet pills or anything while breastfeeding but now I am looking for help. I cant eat any less that I do and get out of bed and take care of the house, the baby and work out. I just dont have the energy as it is.

Have you been checked out for hormone inbalance? Just wondering because you may be suffering from postpartum and it affects mood and can affect weight as well. I would also suggest when you are done breast feeding that you consider doing an internal cleansing program like DrNatura's colonix to help get you started. It helped me get onto track to lose weight and get me healthy. It also helped with my energy. I would recommend you also seek help from a naturopath - a good one will be able to help you out with natural herbs and keep you on the healthy path. Let us know what you are doing and how it is working for you. Take care.

I was put on Inderal on Aug 23,2007 and by Sept 15,2007 I gained 50lbs. During that time I called the Dr. 3 times and told her that I thought it was making me gain the weight and she said no, and she wanted to up it from 40mgs to 80mgs. but when I hit 193lbs, I threw the med. in the trash. I have only lost 20lbs and I am so upset I was wearing size 4 jeans last year and now I wear a size 12. It seems no matter what I do I can't get it off. I'm afraid to eat anything. I have just started eating a salad for supper and a bananna and only drinking water and still losing nothing. My Dr.l says that can't be. But my family and I know and the people I work with.To bad there is not a pill that can take it off as fast as that one put it on.
