Weight loss slowing down/stopping during menapause.

by Tipper, May 19, 2005 12:00AM
After losing 40 pounds in 6 months through Weight Watchers, I haven't been able to lose weight in the past month. I am experiencing menopause symptoms now and want to know what I can do to start losing weight again?

The only answer to this (in my experience) is small, frequent, nutritious meals and EXERCISE EXERCISE EXERCISE.  As you're entering menopause, your body wants to hang on tofat, because estrogen is stored in fat.  I'm 52 now, and officially menopausal, but as I approached 50, I had to increase exercise from 30 minutes three times a week to 1-2 HOURS DAILY.  It doesn't have to be all at once; you can walk briskly for a half hour in the morning, at breaks/lunch, and in the evening until you get the 1-2 hours in.  Be creative and find something fun-rollerblading, bicycling, even mowing the lawn with a push mower counts (well, mowing isn't fun :)

I seldom eat a large meal; it's a lowfat smoothie and a handful of almonds for breakfast, an orange for snack, soup and salad for lunch, celery with a little peanut butter for snack, a small piece of meat and two veggies for dinner, popcorn for snack.  By keeping your blood sugar steady instead of way up with a big meal and way down afterwards, you keep your metabolism revved up.

Once you get to target weight, you can back off the exercise a little until you see how much it takes to maintain that weight.

Your problem might be due to estrogen excess.  You might need to regain your natural balance.  There are creams for premenstural and menopause.  Unexplained weight gain or water retention are two of the many symptoms.

You need to forget diet.  Diet is a misnomer. a lifetime /lifestyle of eating , exercise is the only long term solution  to maintaining  a healthy weight.

Breakfast is the most important meal .  Eat smaller portions 4 to 6 times a day. Stay away from fad "diets"  over the long term they are useless.

Any exercise in which you are moving moving moving. walking , lifting weights, Biking, cleaning house , swimming, batmitton.etc.

balanced meals , less and less saturated fats, sugars, simple carbs,

Theres no "magic diet " to losing weight.

Best wishes.
