Why isn't 'healthy' working?

by jenb35, Feb 21, 2007 12:00AM
I started the healthy lifestyle approach on 12-26-06 and have yet to see any results.  A brief description of activities: going to gym three to four times a week (mostly cardio but some light weight training as well), eating fresh fruits, veggies, and whole grains staying away from fried foods, heavy meals and sweets.

Used to be I ate two doughnuts for breakfast, fried chicken for lunch, candy bar for snack and two plates of whatever I cooked for dinner and gained a lot of weight.

Now that I'm living 'healthy' I would have expected that I'd lose weight, right?  Wrong.  I haven't lost anything...In fact I've gained 10 pounds.

This is very discouraging as well as depressing.  Help!?  What am I doing wrong...

I do feel changes in my body but I would expect my jeans would be looser not tighter!  I would expect that clothes I wore in October I'd be able to wear now in February.

UGH!!!

Hey !

You are in the right path, break the amount of food in small portion eat 5 or six times a day drink a glass of water before and after each meal, brisk walking, fast dancing, jumping the ropes or arobic can help you along with the exercises you are doing, do each exercise every day for the first 2 weeks and then 6 or 5 times a day according to your neeeds, you can do one exercise beside the one you already doing in the gym 30 minutes to one hour each and if you want to do 'em all then 10 to 15 minutes each.

good luck

with a lot of dedication and persistency your goals will be archived.

why do you keep referring to solo if you arent him? dont trust you

by Aruba417, Feb 21, 2007 12:00AM
You might be eating too much of the "good" stuff. A lot of times, myself included, we tend to think that since we're not eating ONE candy bar, that we're allowed to eat 2 or 3 bananas. Or since we're not eating fried chicken, we can have TWO servings of roasted chicken. My advice would be to cut down your calories dramatically. Ask your doctor what the right amount would be. It depends on how much you weigh. For instance, for my weight, I need to eat between 1000-1200 calories per day. No more, no less. Cut out all your sugar products, cut out potatoes, and don't eat ANY kind of bread (for at least a few weeks). Then see how that will do. You're on the right track. The exercise is great. And keep in mind that muscle weighs more than fat does! Have you measured yourself?

Allow me to clarify....

This isn't my first time at weight loss.  At one point I was 279 and dropped (over a period of a year) to 170.  I did this by starvation and it was not a pretty sight.  By the time I was done I was crazy from hunger and also upset because I didn’t ‘see’ the weight loss.  I still saw myself as FAT.

After the loss I gained back almost 50 pounds, which was easy to do because I hadn’t learned anything from the first weight loss.  I just lost it and then went back to the way I ate before I went on the diet from hell.

Fast-forward to now.  I am desperate to lose this 50 I put back on plus another 30 and it isn’t budging.  I don’t eat two or three bananas because they are healthy…I eat proportions and I keep it within reason.  Breakfast is usually piece of fruit and yogurt, snack of shredded wheat ( I actually like them) and salad, tuna, piece of fruit at lunch.  I’ll eat a sensible dinner in the evening and a light snack before bed if I am hungry.  One of the things I can not do is hunger anymore…the last time was painful!

That being said there should be some shedding of the pounds occurring…Two months later definitely.  I am beginning to wonder if this might be a thyroid problem intermingled with a slow metabolism.

Thanks for your help.

Hmmm, yeah you probably better ask your doctor. He/she is the only one that will know what to do. It could be some underlying health issues.

The weight loss program I am on as helped me lose 13 lbs since Jan 1st. I cut out everything I mentioned above and am eating 1200 calories a day. That was on my doctor's advice. It's not a starvation diet. Until I did this I had a HARD time losing weight as well. I had my thyroid checked and everything was normal. I exercised 3 times a week and ate right foods and my weight didn't budge. Now the pounds are FINALLY melting off!

if you would like I can figure out how many calories you need to eat in a day. I need your age, height, weight. Then I recommend that you eat 6 small meals with protein at each meal. don't eat things out of a box or package unless it is rice or plain rice cakes. Cut out fruit by 3rd meal, high in sugar, cut out complex carbs by 5th meal (potatoes, rice) and add in fiberous carbs ( broccoli, salad, etc) the reason for this is you are more likely to be more active in the mornings than at night. The hunger I can understand but you have to remember your stomach will need to shrink some :(. When my hunger gets real bad I drink coffee. Make sure to weigh at least once a week and measure your body- arms, waist, belly, legs, chest. Keep a log. Also keep a log of the food you eat and by that I mean even the amount like 3 oz of chicken, 4 oz of a yam, etc. I have lost 60 pounds doing this. I also zig zag my calories so my body won't adapt. post your info if you would like me to figure out your calories for you.

I hope I have helped you. Loosing weight is SOOOO challanging!!!!

you sure do answer the same as solo. Do you really think we are that stupid?

dance? You were the only one who would mention dancing as a form excersise. You gave yourself away!!

Maybe the fact that you were on such a starvation diet before has really slowed down your metabolism. I am not a pro with this but I believe it means that this time around you have to have more patience to see results by slowly reducing your caloric intake over a few months. Nothing too radical. Give yourself a bit longer - and if you tend to build muscle easily, your frequent exercising will initially make your clothing feel tighter but then start burning fat. Or are you pregnant??

by pertykitty, Feb 22, 2007 12:00AM
oh my!! i think there is a forum for eye site here.

Hey, what do you mean by zig-zagging your calories? I've been doing the 1200 calorie thing for 6 weeks and I don't want my body to adapt either! Thanks!

by snowfairy, Feb 22, 2007 12:00AM
OMG!!! I visit this forum every single day. I was very happy with he fact that solo_box was gone. Now I have to read his posts again?? as lizamon??? the only thing besides the dancing advise was the gallon of water daily. Please try  not to mess up this time. Obviously you are  welcome here since you've abused many people, including me. Why can't you just get over yourself?? GOD!!!!!

Zig zagging your calories means you change things up. I have a cheat day, some do a cheat meal, some double there carbs once or twice a week. If you eat the same amount of calories day in and day out your body adapts. This method shokes your system and for me it is fun and keeps me sane :)

by snowfairy, Feb 22, 2007 12:00AM
I meant to say solo_bx is not welcome here...not at all.

just a little advice from a friend, I know you don't consider me a friend but you might notice I haven't joined in on the fight this time. And I'm not going to call you any names because when solo was here that was one of the things that he did that bothered me so strongly.

I just want to say that you are posting daily to new readers that have no idea who solo is/was. Your posts referring to him and his secretary make no sense and do little to lend to your credibility. The fight with solo is over and should be left in the past to rest in peace. If you feel you have something of value to say, just say it - as yourself, one name and leave it at that. Us old timers will recognize a few lines here and there but hey who's counting? Like we said all along, all we wanted  was for you to be respectful and now it seems like you are. And you're even getting what you want anyway, we can't talk about drugs, doctors & clinics anymore! What more could you want?

Thanks! The program I'm on (which must remain nameless - haha) says I need to start incorporating omega fatty oil. It also says I don't need to count the calories in that oil. I'm supposed to take like 2 tablespoons a day and it's about 130 calories a tablespoon! So technically, I'm now adding an extra 260 calories a day. That kinda worries me. The scale didn't budge this week!

Good luck with that. I calculate my fats in.

can't you take omega fatty oil in a capsule? My husband takes them to lower cholesterol. Is that not the same thing?

by live4fitness, Feb 26, 2007 12:00AM
Yes it is. It is just lower in calories because of the quantity. Like the salmon oil I take is only 1 gram of fat which is 20 calories. And if I add in 1/2 tbsp of flax oil it is 55 calories. Those are great oils but high in caloreis. Another example is 1 tbsp olive oil is 119 calories.

From what I was told by the program instructor, the capsuls don't have nearly enough of the oil we need. I don't know how true that is, but that's what I was told. Yeah, live4fitness is right about the olive oil...but supposedly you're not supposed to heat it and make sure you use EXTRA VIRGIN olive oil.

If you are not eating 100% organic your body is stil being overloaded with toxins keeping you fat. Do a colon clense liver clense and heavy metel clense and then eat only 100% organic and cut out all pasturized dairy as it will make u fat. Eat only 100% grass fed beef as corn fed beef makes u fat as well. Add coconut oil to your diet fry with it bake with it and eat it raw it will help the pounds come off. I promise this will help dramitically and never eat out at resturants or fast food even if its a salad...at least until the weight u want is off...then maybe once a month u can eat at a resturant. but choose sensible foods. You can still have dairy and ice cream products as  long as they are made with raw milk and without sugar. I have a great ice cream recipie made with maple syrup instead of sugar. Let me know if i can offer any more advice.
