Get the book You on a Diet by Drs. Oz and Roizen. It is eye opening about how the body works and exactly what you need to do to lose weight. Amazon.com has it and it comes with a dvd workout video. It is better than drugs. I am on topamaxTopamax Topamax sprinkle for migraines which helped me to lose 16 lbs. but I am not sure if your doctor will prescribe for weight only but I do know some doctors will.
It typically takes about twentyTwenty twenty minutes for your body to start burning fat when you are doing aerobic activity.
However, there is a four minute(approximately)excercise by Teresa Tapp (t-tapp and it is a dot com) that puts you into linear allignment and fat burning in just that amount of time. It is the "PrimaryPrimary amyloidosis Primary biliary cirrhosis Primary hyperparathyroidism Primary insomnia Primary lymphoma of the brain Back Stretch." I have used her materials for about two years. I have seen her in person. She is very intellegent, kind, and she gives you hope. The kids I work with do her exercises (the four minute "ho-downs" really perks them up... helpful for a ton of reasons, not enough room to go into here). I highly recomend her website.
Also, try to get your handsHand or foot spasms Hand tremor on anything by Covert Bailey. I started doing aerobics in 1981 and give him and his book, "Fit or Fat?" total credit for changing my life. He has not written a ton of books, so anything you can get would be helpful. "Smart Exercise" is one of my favorite's....again, by Covert Bailey. He has retired, but you can find his work on Amazon or Ebay, I am sure...or, the good old bookstore.
It is not entirely true that you are just putting in time after 30 - 40 minutes of cardio, but Bailey does a nice job of explaining how you need to build your body up to get it to be an efficient fuel burning machine and how initially you need to put in more time, or more frequent 10 - 30 minutes of exercise (in the appropriate heart range) a day so that you literally change the cell structure in your body's cells so that you burn fat better. It takes time, but do not give up.
Also, Bailey explains interval training very very well. A person who is overweight and/or not fit may be doing interval training even if they go from a regular paced walk for two to five minutes to a faster walk for about two minutes and then back again to a regular walk, etc. Whereas when we think of interval training, we often think of "sprinting."
