exercising consistently, but pounds are not coming off

by patches201, Jun 13, 2005 12:00AM
Hi,
I am going to my daughter's wedding in September and since March, I have exercised1-2 hours daily 6 days a week and I see a difference and feel a difference, but the scales do not show a difference.  What is wrong? I'm 50, but a young 50 and exercise hard.  HELP

Do you eat the same number of calories every day? If so, you might want to try and make it different each day, that's helped me a lot... some days, have 200 more, then the next, have 200 less, etc..

There is a tendency to increase your calorie intake by the amount you're burning in exercise, so pay attention to your diet.  But also keep in mind there are three factors that add pounds to the scale while you're actually losing body fat and slimming down:
1)  muscle ways more than fat (you hear this one all the time)
2)  when you exercise hard and regularly, your blood volume increases
3)  your muscles will retain a little more water when you're working out a lot
So don't worry about the scale.  If you feel slimmer and your clothes fit looser, you're on the right track.  You might try measuring your hips, or whatever body part it is you'd like to see slimmer, and tracking the inches rather than the pounds.  And face it, at 50, you may not slim down as fast as a 20-year-old....but you go girl!  I'm sure you look fabulous!
