lap band

by Mick251, Mar 14, 2006 12:00AM
I am so glad that i found this web site. This forum has offered a great deal of insight on both types as well as experiences from these surgeries. My mother had the RNY bypass surgery and i must say that she has lost 110lbs and looks terrible. Her self esteem is lower than ever. She is very concerned about her appearance and always has been, but it has turned into an obsession! I was exploring my options and will continue to research the Lap Band surgery.

I would really like to thank The Ghost for giving us those follow ups, but will you PLEASE let us all know what your current situation is. I am dying to know, I want to hear more!!!

I have a few questions.

1. After you have dropped the weight you needed to drop can you elect to have the Lap Band removed?

2. Are you restricted from running or jogging after you begin to lose the weight? A risk of slippage?

3. After the surgery what are your restrictions and for how long? EX; exercise, return to work because I have a labor intensive job.

I would again like to thank all of you for sharing your knowledge and experiences with the rest of us, it really has helped!

The band is meant to be a lifetime implant.  With that said, if there are complications it can be removed.  However, you may gain back all of the weight lost.

I have not heard of any restricitions from exercise.

If you have a desk job, most have been off work 1 week.  If it's more physical, your doctor will let you know.  I was cleared to exercise with cardio one week after surgery.  I have not begun weights yet.

I would again like to thank all of you for sharing your knowledge and experiences with the rest of us, it really has helped!

approximently how much does the Lap Band cost, I am from Canada so the cost may differ from the US cost. How overweight would someone have to be to qualify for the procedure? Thanks for reading Veronica

I was reading a fairly intense discussion between a surgeon and a RNY pt who was very against the band.  I wanted so badly to post but that discussion thread had been closed.  So out of frustration, I decided to post here!

I had a lapband placed in Dec 2002 and have lost 80 pounds and now have a normal BMI.  I've had no complications and am very happy with the band.  Just to sweeten the pot, so to speak, I am a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator who now works with many band patients.  So if anyone has any questions for me, ask away!

I am alomst 60 years old and considering Lap Band Surgery.  However, I am a bit afraid because of my age.  Do people my age have this done ?  I would appreciate an answer, my decision is based on the answer.

Bev, thank you for your info and encourgement.  I am 61 years old, have high blood pressure, too big and having trouble now with pain in joints etc, on the way to getting diabetes.  Have tried weightwaters many times in last twenty years loose 40 lbs then put it back on!  I really need to have this done because if I dont I could possibly have a stroke or MI, so my question is to you...if I have failed all these years perhaps due to willpower or whatever? can I also fail with lapbanding? I need to loose 100 obs, so I can breathe easily again and walk easier and live to enjoy my grandbabies.  I am afraid because the cost to me here in Canada is 18000$ alot of money, so I need to know it will work, if it does it will be worth the sacrifising but if it might fail because I dont have will power or stamina it will break us.  What is your opinion please?
