Is is safe to take metformin eventhough your not diabetic or without prescription from your doctor? What I'm after is the weight loss effect..

Im on metformin, and i thought i was taking this for diabetes, but shortly found out im not. The only thing my doctor said was that i have really high bad cholesterol and i do not understand how this drug affects that, ive been reading that alot of people are on this for weight loss, im 17 yrs old im 5"4 and weigh 200lbs, could this be why? if anyone can help me please please let me know thanks
