need an advice about weight loss pills

by amandaw, Oct 18, 2006 12:00AM
hello everyone.
I've started to read about wight loss pills only recently, and need some advice. I've found a review on http://www.sanusvictus.com/?s0=weightloss about BioLean pills, but I'm not sure whether they're ok.. they seem to be quite high-rated on amazon, but the price is quite high. Can you give me some advice on those or propose some alternatives?
thanks in advance

weight loss pills are a billion dollar industry and are not
designed to help you lose weight !!!  that's the one thing
the industry does not want !!!   get on a bike or walk, walking
is one of the fastest weight loss regiments you can do. just
walk, walk an hour every day. pounds will shed quick !!!
stop eating big dinners, studies show that thin healthy people
(in general) eat big breakfasts and small low fat dinners.
stop eating after six pm, then drop it to 4 pm (depending on
your schedule) and drink water, not soda or sugary juices, but water. THERE IS NO MAGIC PILL, it's all YOU, YOUR the magic !
                   good luck          l.e.

I would normally be the first in line to agree with him, wholeheartedly, about diet pills. You have to be very very careful and if any doubt at all DON'T take them. Whatever they used to put in Dexatrim and/or Metabolife is most likely the reason I now suffer from seizures.

But you still have to consider all the benefits vs. risks and there are a lot of serious health risks involved with being overweight too. You didn't say what your story is, but if you have a lot to lose like I do, you might not can lose it with diet, exercise, and will power alone (like I couldn't).

What I take now are hcg/b-12 injections weekly from a clinic and appetite suppressants called Bontril daily. I did a lot of research on them before I started them and strongly believe that the risks involved are lower than the risks of diabetes and other things I could have been headed for at the rate I was going. I've never heard of the drug you mentioned, but that is all I know of to suggest to you. Do research on the internet and talk to your doctor.

By the way, I do agree that these are not magic, they just help. You still have to do the work! I do a low cal diet and lots of water and exercise! These are just tools to help it come off faster, give me energy, etc. I have lost 30 lbs since June. Good luck to you!

Leif was doing good until he talked about how you should stop eating at 4pm (or even 6pm)
Yes, it's true that many people are not as active late in the day and they are more likely to make poor choices at the end of the day.
BUT if you are up later than that ( as most people are) you will need food later than that. It will keep your metabolism from slowing down from your body going into a starvation mode) See, your body will react pretty quickly to not being fed, so when you go too long without food, it slows down. It doesnt come to a screeching halt at exactly 4 hrs, but by then your blood sugar is low and you're probably not feeling very energetic. If you are going to be active and in a healthy frame of mind, you are going to need something to pick you up! Just make it healthy!

About diet pills: they are not what makes or breaks somebodys weight loss efforts. If you are already pretty lean, they may help you to lose that last little bit before a figure, fitness, or bodybuilding competition. BUT if you have a long way to go, they are definitely not something that will be a miracle. THey may help you burn calories, but they are fat loss SUPPLEMENTS for a reason. They are meant to SUPPLEMENT a diet and exercise plan. So, dont waste that 30$, go join a gym instead. It should cost about the same for a month at a gym as it does for a month supply of pills and you will get better results there with the proper guidance as to a program that will work for you.

I am a personal trainer and no, I do not believe that I know everything because of that, but- I have had a lot of experience in helping my clients lose and keep weight off. I am also a dietetics student. I pretty much spend my free time reading scholarly articles and physiology that pertains to fat loss.

What I would suggest is that you first empty your head of all the myths you've been taught your whole life about how to lose weight.

Second- One thing more overweight/obese people do less (often times) than lean people is that they don't eat as often or as much. It sounds wrong, but there are many people out there who are overweight and eat as few as 500 cals a day. Now, I am not dumb. I know that there are many people that are heavy today because they ate too much, exercised too little, or made poor food choices. Many people are also unable to lose weight because of hormonal issues or thyroid issues, but assuming these are normal-

in order to get your metabolism up, you need to be eating about every 3-4 hours. No more than 4 hours between meals! Now, each of these meals is not a full four course meal of course. Losing weight requires some dedication as well, so if this is something you want, ask yourself what you're willing to do for it. It's a pretty simple equation and there really isn't a secret to it.
1.Get off the couch and outside or to the gym or play with kids. Anything! But move! You dont even need a fancy exercise routine to get going! It wouldnt hurt to have a goal and have a plan, but many people just need to get their foot out the door, so just make sure you do something active for about 20-30 min a day. If you dont have time for that, you seriously need to re-evaluate your life or how you spend your free time.
2. What you eat and how often is about 80 or more % of the results you get. Many people can lose weight on processed foods, but  part of that is just the small portions and the other part is that those foods do not support lean body mass. (which is your metabolism and how you burn calories even when you are resting).
So what should you eat??
ANY vegetable- preferably green ones, and veggies that are not canned. If you have to cook them, only cook them until they are tendercrisp. If your broccoli is brown, it's overcooked. It should be a vibrant green color. (do NOT boil vegetables- you lose too many vitamins that way)

any kind of lean meat. at LEAST 60g a day, but more preferably more than that.

Healthy carbs: high fiber/low cal breads to substitute the white bread or high cal wheat, brown rice (not instant), old fashioned oats (not instant!), crunchy fruits

Moderate your dairy. I would suggest getting rid of milk all together, but that's just my bias. (we are the only mammal that not only drinks milk past infancy, but we drink ANOTHER animal's milk!!!!) but, milk is better than soymilk for your health (dont get me started on soy) so if you must have it, go skim or 1%.

Healthy fats! Yes, you NEED fat! get your omegas from fish and definitely start taking 1-2 capsules of fish oil as a supplement every day. Other healthy fats would be: almond or peanut butter. (but they have to be NATURAL because the processed kind has hydrogenated oils and sugars in them. the hydrogenated oils can contribute to high cholesterol by promoting oxidation of the bad LDL cholesterol- so stay away from those trans fats)

stay out of the middle of the grocery store (unless shopping for that natural peanut butter or tuna of course!) because all you will find there is processed junk. and before anyone asks, NO the 100 calorie packs are NOT healthy! they're a joke. they're 100 calories of ****! but, if you are having a craving, these things may be for you. They are portion controlled..so if you MUST have something, this could be an option to use. also, sugar free jello is good. anyway, hopefully by filling up on your veggies and protein you will not need junk.

So, i dont know if anyone will follow my advice or not, but I really want people to know that it's a rather simple equation and it's just a decision that you need to make for yourself. Dont let anyone else make it for you and dont do it for anyone else. Even if you start with just a couple changes, like...switching out your pop for water at first and going from there...you are making progress and will eventually get to where you want to be.

if you have any questions feel free to write me back on here, or you can email me at ***@****

It helps because you eat fewer calories when you stop eating so early.. but it can end up doing some damage to your metabolism in the long run. Anyway, hopefully what I posted is a little helpful

well i stand corrected to a degree, thanks.
all i know is what worked for me, and i did mention that the schedule you are on depends on what time you should stop eating.
the 6pm cut off worked well for my schedule. i'm just a guy
doing things on my own, you should of course listen to the pro.
instead of me !    good luck     l.e.

I completely agree with all your advice ptkrissy, but I just want to reiterate that "if you have a long way to go" sometimes you feel overwhelmed, like its impossible; especially if you have tried and failed several times. If there's a medication that will help you get control - so when you take all that healthy advice and do great on the first day or two of your diet you don't end up feeling like eating everything in the entire house at the end of the day - you really feel like its a wonderful tool to help you lose the weight!!You are able to eat smaller portions and not be hungry, plus have energy to exercise so its a win-win, and then when you start losing you have confidence and the cycle continues. I think its a wonderful program and the best and only thing that has ever worked for me.

I really do believe in a healthy lifestyle and I don't think you should try every diet and drug that comes along that claims great results, but I promise I am living proof this one does! I guess I'm just saying if somebody can lose it on their own, that's great and more power to them, but a lot of us can't; and this is a much better alternative than staying overweight.

I agree with you too about if you have a long way to go etc.. but I guess what I'm referring to are those pills that have the crazy infomercials, the ones you can find on the shelves at wal mart.. although, there are a few that can be helpful. (even if it's just a mental thing) Some good off the shelf pills are things like Hot Rox (and the new Hot Rox extreme coming out soon!), Lipo6 (which has a money back guarantee), and anything with stuff like guggul extract in it. The prescription stuff that is being talked about on this board is obviously helpful, but definitely should be used with supervision of a doctor (phentermine, etc)

I agree re: medical supervision when taking phentermine or other prescribed meds for weight loss.  However, I'd also like to say that phentermine has been around a LONG time...its pretty much tried & true.  It works and the side effects are well known.  Some of the OTC and herbal type weight loss concoctions can be far more dangerous actually.  There has been no FDA testing etc ever done...hence the problems like Metabolife etc.
