need to find a doctor in Hampton Roads to prescribe appetite suppresants

by atimo001, Feb 14, 2009 04:05PM
Hi,

I am new to this online community and I'm hoping I will get some support, help and information.

I am 24 female, International student and have been in US in University (B.A. + M.A) for 6 years now. As much as I supervised my eating habits and exercised I have been gaining slowly and steady over 30pounds ( in 6 years) from my normal weight. This trend seems to get worse by the year.  If at the beginning it didn 't matter too much, because it didn't show physically, I'm now not feeling well and want to be seen by a medical doctor. At school Health Center they just give you common-sense information about eating healthy and exercising, but I'm trying to find a doctor who will take me seriously and be willing to prescribe appetite suppressants (ex. Phentermine) or whatever is necessary to help me with my loss weight. I am feeling bad emotionally too, because all my efforts of losing weight are unsuccessful. I'm not trying to find a easy way out, or to replace pills with exercise and healthy diet. I just need an aid to come along with the healthy lifestyle that I am already leading.

I can find, of course, a list of M.Ds in the area, but I am hoping to hear from you about some specific doctors or medical centers that would be helpful. Every consultation is expensive and for an International student with minimal income from home, I have to make every meeting count.

Thank you for listening and hope to hear from you soon.

Dearest atimo001 - First, please accept our warmest welcome to MedHelp and the WL&D Community.  We know it takes a lot of courage to post about your own personal weight loss struggle and we empathize with the frustration of gaining approximately 5 pounds a year.  That said, this community supports losing weight by natural means, such as dieting and exercise.

Those who have taken Phentermine have found that it has not helped them long-term, is not healthy and though they may have experienced some weight loss, it returns quickly and definitely does not support a lifestyle change.

May I most sincerely suggest that you provide us with some information that will help you establish the base calories needed to sustain your weight?  You age, height, weight, sex and activity level is needed to do so.  From this number, you can figure out how many calories you are consuming and what calorie deficit you may need to establish to lose weight.

Weight is basically physics .. what you eat (calories in) minus what you burn (exercise) equals your weight (loss, gain or remaining stable).  The members of this community are most willing to help you in this endeavor and have great information to share, tips to help and are most encouraging and supportive.

If you elect, however, to continue your pursuit of Phentermine, then your post would be better served in the Weight Loss Alternatives Community.  If this is your choice, I will be happy to move your post there for you .. just let me know.

Hoping you will join with us to make the healthy lifestyle changes to accomplish your goal.  We're all in this together .. and would love to have you share your journey with us.

Very best wishes .. and supportive (((Hugs)))

Dear Ranaesheart,

Thank you for the welcoming message.
I am aware of the basic physics of weight loss, BMI, appropriate calorie-intake and so forth. I am working within this system, yet with all the stress from school, finding a job and trying to eat healthy/exercise...I have found out I need to do more than just eat less calories per day...

I have already added my post to Weight Loss Alternative Community. And I also found some helpful suggestions in that area. We will see how that goes. Feel free to delete my post in this section, should you find it necessary.

All the best!

We all must make the choices we feel are most appropriate for us.  I wish you luck with yours.

I will not delete your post, but am moving it to the Weight Loss Alternatives Community.  Should you decide to join us at some point in the future, for natural weight loss via nutritional food choices and exercise, we would welcome your participation in the WL&D Community.

Very best wishes ..
