19 yr. old non smoker with Blood Clots due to Yamin Birth Control

I am 19 years old, I do not smoke and I have no family history of blood clots. Yet... I have 3 blood clots in my left leg. I was a perfectly healthy, athletic teenager until just recently. I have only been on Yasmin for 4 months, and this is the only possible answer the doctors have as to what caused the blood clots. I just got out of the hospital after 8 days... and I am now taking Coumadin and giving myself injections of Lovenox... both of which are blood thinners. Let me tell you, its been no picnic. I will be on Coumadin (which is a very dangerous drug.. rat poison to be exact) for the next 9 months, and I am no longer able to take any form of hormones.. I am looking into IUD's. The doctors think this is totally crazy because, after all, I am only 19!! Is there anything legally I can do about this?

I just joined this site, and I am SO happy to read this. Not that you had to go through this mess, but because I am 20 years old, and you are the first person around my age that I know of having to go through the same things I am. I was in the hospital 9 days in October after they found several blood clots in both of my legs. I had surgery that was supposed to removed 90% of them, but just 3 weeks ago the doctor found more. I take that rat poison every single day as well.

This may not be much help, but I can totally relate to what you are going through. Getting blood taken once a week to check your INR and being the only one under 60 at the clinic ha ha. Message me sometime.

I'm Morgan by the way ha ha.

Hello, I wonder how many people out there are getting these blood clots from Yasmin because two years ago I had two blood clots in my lungs after taking Yasmin for about a year.  They did every genetic test possible and they were all negative.  I've never smoked and I was 30 years old.  I will be on coumadin for life now.  I am pregnant now and I have to give myself Lovenox injections twice a day because coumadin causes birth defects.  I had taken other birth contol pills before Yasmin.  I had taken them for 14 years before switching to Yasmin then I get these blood clots.  I feel like this pill is more dangerous and the makers should have some responsibility for this.  I wonder if they keep statitics somewhere about how many women on Yasmin get these blood clots?  Anyway, I just wanted to let you know you are not alone in this.  It has been a horrible experience for me, especially since I have a phobia of needles.

Here is a link to an article about a young woman in my area who died from taking Yasmin.

I just stopped taking yasmin after 2 years, because I found out with the type of migraine I have (which this woman also had) I should never take any BCP because of the much increased risk for stroke - and that's for ANY age, not just those over 35, or smokers - anybody who has this type of migraine is at a much higher risk.

I had blood clots in my legs several years ago from Alesse, and my doctor just switched my prescription, and never told me that with my migraines I should not be on the pill. It's very scary and I'm glad I found out on my own before anything happened.

My advice to you is to consider other methods, like condoms, diaphram w/spermicide, or the Fertility Awareness Method. I recently started with FAM and it feels wonderful to be in control of my fertility without relying on artificial hormones. If you are interested, look here, I just finished the book and loved it.

hi.. it's me again... as for legal action, i asked my DH who is a pharmacist, so he is pretty knowledgable about the legalities relating to medications. he said that you would not have a case because it is listed as a side-effect, and sometimes it just happens. he did agree that yasmin is actually one of the safer pills when it comes to blood clots. apparently the hormone in it is generally much less likely to cause clots than other bcp. he was quick to say also that you are very lucky that they found the clot in time to give you treatment, as often it is missed. i'm glad to hear that you're being looked after so well and hope you get through this without further complications. your situation really makes one realize that that list of possible side effects that we take for granted are real possibilities.

I agree with peekawho, you need to be retested later. It has to be so scary what has happened to you, but truly, consider yourself very fortunate. I knew a 20 year old woman that was driving home from work, non-smoker, and had a blood clot go to her lungs and died. The patient information packet clearly states that blood clots are a possible side effect. As with all meds, there can be adverse reactions. I'm glad that you are out of the hospital and doing better. Let us know of your future tests.

Sorry, I misread the no smoking part.

Sounds like you're getting good care, then.  It's even more unusual for you to have blood clots if you don't smoke.  Keep us posted on what happens.

I don't smoke. And I was worked out and the test came back negative. I am going to be given that test again once I get off the Coumadin (in 9 months). My uncle is the Chief Cardiologist in Houston, so he is keeping a close eye on my status... he  said although my test results came back negative, they are in fact not reliable because i was given the test when I was in the hospital being treated with blood thinners. Thank you though, I will surely be looking more into that disease!

You need to be worked up for certain blood clotting disorders, specifically Factor V Leiden
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factor_V_Leiden

While smokers have a higher than usual incidence of blood clots while on the pill, it is still UNUSUAL for a 19 year old smoker to have blood clots.

I'm very serious.  Ask your doctor to consider testing you for this.  Even if no one in your family is known to have it, you still could.  I'd insist on being tested.

Several years ago, I worked with a 20 year old nurses assistant who smoked and took bcp's.  Unfortunately, she developed a blood clot in a very important part of the venous system of her brain, and ultimately died.  During the course of her illness, she was found to have the Factor V Leiden disorder.  No one in her family had ever had blood clots, but it turned out later that almost HALF of them had the same disorder.

You can always use a diaphragm for contraception until you get this worked out.  Good luck!  Please post back and let me know what happens.

i'm not sure what the laws are, but i know my birth control pills and all the commercials i see on TV clearly state that there are risks of serious side effects, including blood clots and stroke. i am not sure you would have a case against the drug manufacturer when they make the possibility of side effects so clear. as for your doctor, yasmin is prescribed so regularly, i don't think he had reason to suspect you'd react like this. did your dr also discuss the possible side effects?
personally, if i were you i would look into my options only if i were uninsured and this caused financial hardship. even then, i would only look to get my medical expenses covered (and possibly time at work missed). if you're looking for a big compensation, i implore you to reconsider. the reason why we pay such ridiculous insurance rates is because so many people sue. many doctors, especially ob gyns are no longer practicing certain fields of medicine because their malpractice insurance is so ridiculous. in fact, i couldn't go to the OB i wanted to see when i became pregnant, because she stopped delivering babies because of insurance and liability. i was upset because she came so highly recommended by people who had used her years ago.

i am sorry to hear you've had such a hard time, and hope you feel better soon. good luck with whatever you decide to do. i am sure it will be the right decision for you.

i am sorry to hear this.i hope you get better.one of the possible side effects of birth control is clotting.when birth control first came out in the 1960's this was a bigger problem.now that birth control has lower hormones it isn't as big a problem but still can happen at any age.

as far as legal action you could sue your doctor and the company that made this form of birth control.
