35 weeks pregnant with twins and on Fentanyl - is this safe?

by TeresaG, Jun 15, 2007 12:00AM
Hi, I have just been released from hospital after 6 days of chronic kidney pain.  I am 35 weeks pregnant with twins and it appears that one of the babies heads is lying low and constricting my uterus and bladder so I have been having trouble to pee and I am getting chronic pain in my right flank.  I did have severe swelling of my right leg which I have now controlled by laying down with my legs in the air for most of the day and night.  When in hospital my Ob/gyn put me on morphine and then onto a Fentanyl patch (75mcg per hour) which I have been on for 6 days.  I am now at the end of my 2nd patch.  I desperately do not want to take these meds for fear of what this is doing to my babies, however I am in such chronic pain without them.  I am booked in for a C-Section in 10 days and my Ob/gyn thinks I should stick it out on the pain med.  I tried to get by without putting the 2nd patch on but the pain was too bad.  My babies are 5lbs 6oz and 5lbs 12ozs, so I am wondering if I should ask for an early C-section?  or do as the doc says and keep taking the meds for another 10 days???  Please if anyone has any information, I am at my wits end, what with worry and side effects of the drugs.
Thanks

I have twin boys now 6yrs old.  At 35 weeks why don't they just deliver you?  I delivered my boys at 37 1/2 and they were 4.5 oz. and 5.5 oz (4 min apart).  I believe to deliver twins at 35wks is safe.  Of course, it would be nice if you could hold out longer.  Good Luck.

I feel for you.  I have been on Meprigan (demeral and phenergan)  For severe pain in my back and inner thighs to my growen and I am now 35 weeks pregnant with twins.  I've been on this med. for two weeks now and the doctor assures me it is not going to hurt the babies.  I think If you can hold out the best place for the babies is inside of you for their lung development.  I have felt guilty for wishing I could have mine now b/c of the pain.  I don't think your Dr. would give you a med. for a long period of time if he thought it would hurt the babies.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.
