6 cm mass

I have a 6 cm mass on my right ovary. I am really scared. I am only 28 yrs old and I have 2 children. Cancer runs on both sides of my family. My father just passed away of  pancreatic cancer 5 yrs ago he was only 56 yrs old his father passed away of colon cancer and he was in his 40's. I don't know if it is cancer or not, but I am really scared. I am having surgery on Monday to have the mass removed and depending on how much damage that it has done to my ovary I may have to have it removed as well.

I know that there are fluid filled cysts and semisolid cysts,,when I hear mass I think of a solid object,,so thats why I was asking is this a cyst (fluid filled) or a solid mass.  I guess i should have explained myself better.

Quite often doctors use mass, tumor and cyst interchangeably which can be quite confusing. Using the word "cyst" doesn't sound so frightening but some cysts can be solid. A "mass" is kind of a general term.

Did they happen to mention what kind of cyst it is? The good news is that 95% of all cysts are benign. I just had a 10 cm cyst removed in Feb. and it was benign. Even if they said it was a complex cyst, the odds are still way in your favor. Are they going to remove it laparoscopically - just making 3 little incisions in your tummy? That's a quick recovery. If you want to know more about cysts in general and what to expect from the surgery, there is an Ovarian Cysts forum. They have an excellent "health page" devoted to cysts and describing the different kinds. It always helps to have information. Makes it less scary.
