Abdominal soreness/distention following extensive hysterectomy/bladder repair

My bladder was badly protruded.  So I had actually two surgeries in one---vaginally and via a large incision.  I had a complete hysterectomy and bladder and rectal pouch repair on January 31.  It has been 3 1/2 months since surgery and the swelling-type abdominal distention is still the same size that I noticed the day following surgery.  There is still lots of soreness, also.  When I sit for a couple hours in one position (as at a concert or in the car) I suffer much discomfort for the next two days. I can only explain it as being firm and feeling tight as a drum, and hurting. It is the kind of firmness that makes me look like I am about 4 or 5 months pregnant. I am 69 years old and in otherwise very good health.  The surgeon brushed me off and told me I need to do situps for the "flab."  Wrong!  There is too much soreness.  I do walk each day, but the discomfort keeps me from walking very fast.  Is this normal---for my abdomen to stay in a distended form and to stay sore and uncomfortable this long after surgery? The doctor thinks I am concerned only about the "big belly" look, but I am concerned about the continued soreness and hurting.  Should I have a sonogram done?

I had a radical hysterectomy Jan 18, 2010.  I did a lot of yoga before my sugery for complex atypical hyperplasia & cannot exclude adenocarcinoma. So everything came out because they didn't know one way or the other if I had cancer. (did not turn out to be cancer, but precancer only,)

Anyway, yoga has been been a life saver, just the breathing alone will help. (and something about doing it in a class is always helpful when you are able to leave the house). And then advance slowly from there.  I had a c-section 16 years ago and it took me years after the c-section to recover some good muscle movement.

The doctors don't prepare us properly for this surgery and it is a travesty. I explained to my doctor I was more concerned about post sugery than the actual surgery.  As good as my doctor was, there was not enough time to explain everything. As we all know, the post sugery instructions are pretty much useless.  At least I was prepared having experienced the c-section. My heart goes out to all you gals suffering out there.

give yoga a try. Start with some small breathing exercises. this also helps the pain and you can do more things with clarity of mind. bit by bit you will be able to do more and more. The beauty of yoga is that it is for everyone at all levels.

I had a radical hysterectomy for uteran cancer in 2004 and am still in daily pain. I feel burning and sometimes even feel like I am being stuck by a wire.  I swell and the pain radiates down my legs and into my back..  I have had accupuncture, steroid injections phyical therapy etc.  It may work for a while but the pain always returns.  I have gained 30 pounds and prefer to lay down because it does help the pain.  I can't take Motrin anymore.  It was the only thing that helped daily but it has done damage to my kidneys now.  My doctor just reminds me how lucky I am to be alive and cancer free.  some days I don't feel so lucky.

I had supracervical hys 5 months ago and extreme pain for weeks. After 2 months my right side started to swell and became painful especially at night when the swelling is worse. The more I try to do the worse the swelling and pain. I've had mri and c-scan and nothing is showing up. My surgeon says I may have inflamation in the ab muscle and my obgyn says I have "cronic" pain and wants me to try accupuncture 1st, then perhaps a steroid injection in the inflamation and then a low dose predinose for 6 months. Has anyone else had this situation?

Hello miller and GypsyJanna,

It's reassuring to know that there are other people out there that have abdominal distention after hysterectomy- I thought I was alone in this. I myself had a radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer about a month ago, on the 05/26/05. My tummy, and middle in general, have become enormous ever since. I used to be fit prior to surgery and exercised religiously, 3-4 times a week. I mainly did pilates which works the middle of the body especially, so the size of my tummy at the moment seems to me incomprehensible! Like miller also complained, I got no sympathy from my doctor, who said it's 'flab' that I must have gained asbecause I stopped exercising! (did we see the same doctor?? - I wonder!). I did not know my muscles were cut so extensively and deeply in my gut, so GypsyJanna's reply helped to shed some light to my questions and eased my anxiety- thanks. I understand that the pain will continue for a long time as I also had many lymph nodes removed, but I personally think that worrying about the massive belly look is a very legitimate worry... I believe the cosmetic side of things is important can have a major effect on the psychology of the patient. Gets me down, anyway.

Anyway, thank you both for bringing up the subject and wish you both the speediest recovery.
Best,
Katerina73.

From someone who has had far more than my share of abdominal surgeries I will say it takes a long time until you are pain free. All of the muscles have been cut in your gut, which in turn causes them to lose the strength they once had. This is not only painful to heal, it sucks cosmetically. Give yourself more time to heal, 3 months is nothing after getting tore open like that. Then believe me you can get your flat stomach back, you just have to do those crunches, and they do work! I do 50 a day, take less than 5 min's, my stomach has never been flatter. I am 50 years old and got staph inftection so I had to heal inside out with no stitches or staples, BIG SCAR. Crunches and a little suntan work miracles. Give yourself some time though. Love & Light, Jan
