Adnormal Smear & Colposcopy - Wat does it mean ???

Hi I went for my first smear last friday im 26yrs old, i was told the results would take some weeks and i would recieve my results in a letter however today just under 1 week later i had a call from the doctor asking me to go in and see her today asap she told me that they have found abnormalities and pre-cancerous cells and is refering me to a colposcopy clinic for some procedure and biopsy.. This in itself has scared me as i, however she did specifically say that 'we are not saying you have cervical cancer' so wat does it all mean its my first smear and to be honest im confused at what happens and why i need a biaopsy what can they find what are they testing for ?? She said to call them and i'll have my appointment next week. Some-one mentioned how quick i seem to be getting results and appointments as if there treating it as urgent is this normal ??? I was also told that usually a second smear is done before you are referred for biopsy is this true or just in certain cases ?? I'd be grateful for any advice as although they tell you not to worry its scared the life out of me :)

Thank you for your comment I think to be honest reading about these things on the internet make it worse you start to relate alot of things to syptoms and start to think the worst instead of looking at the actual likely hood of it been anything serious... After a night of no sleep I spoke to the doctor again today who confirmed that my reading on the smear test was severe hense the colposcopy appointment but that while they cannot rule it out the chances of this actually been cancerous at this stage would be extremely low.. Time to stop worrying and get things in perspective :)

I had that too.  It happens to alot of women and the procedure to remove the cells are 95 % effective.  Thats why pap smears are so important because if the abnormal cells are caught early enough then they just remove the cells and you should be fine.  I was worried to be 3 years later still no abnormal cells.  If you are given the choice take the cone procedure the effictiveness rate is much higher!  Hope this helps you :)
