Amniotic fluid disapeared!

A very close friend of mine went into the hospital after not feeling the baby move.  Unfortunatly, she lost the baby.  She had only 3 weeks left in her pregnancy.  What we are trying to figure out is this....During the ultra sound they've discovered there is NO amniotic fluid.  NONE.  No where.  She has had NO leakage, her water did not break, there is not trace that amniotic fluid has passed through her vagina.  Yes, they have tests for that.  There is fluid in the baby's lungs and abdomin.  However at this point she still has not delivered--they are taking it really slow so she can have a vaginal birth instead of a c-section even though she is having to live day in and day out with her baby inside of her deceased.  What my question is, how can this happen and where did the fluid go.  So far the doctors are stumped as well as the nurses.  I'm in the medical field myself and even I have not heard of it just disapearing.  I'm trying to console her and she wants answers. The doctor wants to do an autopsy once they get the baby out but right now its just touch and go.  But where did the fluid go and what can cause the baby to quit making it if it was alive when it disapeared and if the baby passed first then why didn't her body leak the fluid--as I said, IT HAS NOT LEAKED AT ALL.  Just is no longer there, and this happend within a 3 day period.  Thanks!

I was 16 weeks and my fluid leaked out and I went into labor. When I got to the hospital they said there was nothing they could do for me, even though they knew my baby had a strong heartbeat. We asked so many questions if they could fix the problem, a fluid fusion, surgery anything to make it so I didn't lose my baby. They told me there was no hope. They told me that I had an infection and if I didn't deliver the baby I could die, so they induced labor, even though they consider my son stillborn his heart was beating after delivery. After all the tests they said they couldn't figure out if I had an infection, and that there didn't seem to be anything wrong with my son. So I just don't understand what happened, why they couldn't do more, why they couldn't fix this, so I didn't have to say goodbye to my beautiful baby boy far too soon

I'm very sorry to hear about this.  I really have no knowledge as to what could have happened but this also almost happened to my sister.  She was lucky that she had an appointment when she did because she had apparently leaked unknowingly and the baby was in distress.  My sister had to go into the hospital to get a c-section and was very lucky.  If her appointment was a day later her baby would probably not have made it.
