Another silly question...Basal body temp..

by lovethebops, Mar 19, 2007 12:00AM
I understand that when you ovulate your Basal body temperature rises..I'm not really sure what Basal body temp is, and if this temperature spike is something we can feel without taking temp with a Basal thermometer., Like a hot flash,or something..I also heard once this temp spikes and if you do concieve it stays elevated...I have felt cold for a week now..during ovulation and now, does that indicate that I'm probably not pregnant because i don't feel warm..Sorry if that sounds completely stupid, can anyone explain Basal body temperature to me?

It is my understanding that when your tracking your BBT that the change between YOUR "normal temp." and your "raised temp," is only that of SMALL degrees first thing when you wake up ( like the difference between 98.1 and 98.9 or somthing to that effect). I would highly doubt the chances of you being so sensitive to your bodys temp. that you could feel the difference.

Are you tracking your BBT with a BBT termometer? If not thats what you need to do if thats the TTC methoid you'd like to try. They cost about $10.00 bucks and they have BBT thermometers at drug stores and such. The instructions inside tell you exactly how to do it :-) .

Good luck to you in either case!

there is NO way you can track ovulation by a feeling, or a hotflash. this means nothing. (sounds like a myth to me) the only way you can determine if you have ovulated is by taking your bbt everyday, and seeing the pattern!!!

BBT is measured by the hormones in the body.  Before ovulation the bbt is a lot lower than it is after you ovulate.  You will see sometimes dramatic changes in temps but you can not feel it externally.  Mine went from like 97.3 before ovulation to 99 after ovulation.  Right before you ovulate you get a drop in temp and then it shoots up right after ovulation.  If you are pregnant the hormones will keep your temps high.  Sometimes there will be a dip in temp about 7-10 days into your tww.  This could be considered an implantation dip.  This is when the fertilized egg implants itself into the uterus.  You may also notice some light spotting during this time.  I had the spotting and thought my af was early but it wound up being implantation bleeding.  If you get AF, your temp drops again.  The cycle repeats itself.  You can only really see these differences if you are tracking your temps.  Hope this helps.
