Augmentin-vaginal itching/dryness

by sc1230, Apr 22, 2005 12:00AM
I am on a 20 day course of Augmentin XR (4000mg/day) for sinus problems....I have been on antibiotics almost constantly since July.  I have not experienced any yeast infections with any of the antibiotics.  This week, however, I have some very uncomfortable itching and dryness in both the internal and external vaginal area.  I have no unusual discharge or anything of that sort.  Is this most likely just a side effect of the Augmentin or do you think I need to see my Dr.?  By the way, I have been on Augmentin many times before and never noticed this problem.
Thanks for your input!

It sounds like you ahve a yeast infection. When ever I get a yeast infection my vaginal discharge does change I become dry and whatever discharge I do have is very thick (I am sorry for all the info), I also have burning, soreness, and a itch that will make you go crazy. Just because you never suffered like this before doesn't mean anything. I never had yeast infections like I just described untill this pregnancy. So please go get checked out it will start if it allready hasn't become unbearable. How long have you been on your meds? The only thing is that you will probably need to be off the antibiotic before you can treat the yeast.

To all women Augmentin does cause yeast infections.I found out this year from my doctor. You can eat yogurt or ask your phyarmycist for advice there is also something else you can take to help prevent a yeast infection while on Augmentin.

Try taking Lactobacillus Acidophilus supplements.  Sounds silly to eat bacteria on purpose, but is the natural flora we have jam packed into a pill.  When on antibiotics, the medicine kills all bacteria that is there, including the good stuff.    Also, eat yogurt with live cultures, such as Activa, although most contain them.  Hope that helps.

I'd still check with the doctor though.
