Benzodiazepines during pregnancy???

by starnova, May 07, 2007 12:00AM
Hello,

I suffer from panic disorder and it gets way worse when I am under stress which I currently have all of the major life stresses going on.... In any case my kaiser doctors said do not take my ativan 1mg at all during my pregnancy but my shrink whom I have been seeing for over 3 years said the benefits out way the risks in my case. In my first trimester I anaged to just take img at bedtime, but in my second trimester all the stress came and I have been having thr attacks so bad that I cant drive on the freeway... My question? Is my baby going to be addicted to this stuff when its born and does anyone know what can happen? I sometimes at the most take 1 and 1/2mg a day only on a real bad day otherwise I limit it to the 1mg at bedtime.

Worried!!!!

DO NOT take Ativan or any other benzo's during pregnancy.  Here's info from drugs.com
Ativan is in the FDA pregnancy category D. This means that Ativan is known to be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.

I would really talk to your psychiatrist and see if there's something else.  Listen to your ob/gyn, they know a lot more about what you should/shouldn't take during pregnancy than a psych.

I have no way of knowing about addiction, but I can tell you my experience.  My kaiser shrink told me to continue my meds as the benefits were better than the bad that could happen.
I miscarried that child.  I dont know what the odds are towards the medicine causing that, but I do regret taking the meds.  Of my four pregnancies it is the only one I took meds during and the only one I lost.  I would definitely ask for a second opinion before taking a medicine that recommends not taking it during pregnancy.
