Bleeding After 8 years

by suzanne37, Dec 11, 2006 12:00AM
Question: I had a partial hysterectomy in 1998. I still have my ovaries. I had the partial because I was bleeding non-stop, I cant remember what my Dr. called it.
Anyway, I started to bleed For about the past year, I spot about once a month. Sometimes, it's kind of heavy lately. I also cramp very badly, all of the time.
My question is, What do you think it possibly could be? & is it normal?
Does the fact that I have had 5 sections, and a total of 10 surgeries in my life have anything to do with it? "scarring and what not"??
thanks
Suzanne
P:S, and when my best friend has her period, I cramp right along with her....and usually bleed a little as well.

If you had a paritial hysterectomy would that not mean you have no uterus.  Bleeding would be abnormal to me and I would seek a visit to your doctor.    RIGHT AWAY

I think in a partial hysterectomy, the cervix is left in place.  I've heard that the lining of the cervix can shed each month, so that could explain your spotting.  I am unsure about the heavy cramping though so you should definitely talk to your doctor.

Did you ever find out why?

I had a partial hysterectomy approx 7 years ago, due to fibroids. I woke up this morning and saw some spotting.  The Ask Doctor Forum is full and unable to post question.

I read yours' and decided to ask what was your outcome.

To: all
I can't believe I'm not alone. I've had horrible periods my entire life. Finally after passing out at work from severe loss of blood, I ended up in the ER.  This finally had me meet an ob/gyn who took my symptoms seriously. Next thing I knew I was being scheduled for surgery.  I was 26 years old.  After surgery the Doctor told me I was covered in fibroid tumors and cyst as well as endometriosis and that he got as much as he could get out. They said I might be sterile.  After 6 months of Lupron shots I became pregnant. with my miracle child. Thought everything was alright until I kept bleeding heavily again when I found out I was pregnant with my second child.  I was watched very closely during the pregnancy since I was still bleeding and the ultrasound showed another fibroid growing with the baby. Anyway, had another healthy child. The tumor was still there but they weren't concerned.  Years had passed and I continued to increase in weight esp. in the midsection, as well as bleed profusely.  Finally found another doctor that found out I had all the same issues as I had before. So I had a laproscopic supercervical hysterectomy done in Aug. 2005,  My ovaries, fallopian tubes and part of my cervix remained.  This time the doctor told me I had endometriosis connected to so many other organs, and that I had so much scar tissue from the previous surgery,  that they couldn't get everything. But the cyst and fibroids were gone. I was told my period days were over.  Only to see them come back with avengance.  When I went back to the doctor he told me sometimes this will happen since I still had some of my cervix.  He never mentioned this before surgery. About another year past and I had still been bleeding every month but was beginning to have more pains with it. So I finally went back to  the doctor and he did an ultrasound.  It showed another endometrioma, he said. Didn't suggest anything really except removal, but did mention it could come back with even more scar tissue, so since it's so small I might want to wait.  So I did.  Now here I am again 3 years later with severe cramping and bleeding.Which never did stop, it just got worse and worse.  Now I end up back at the ER. That doctor told me it was impossible for me to be bleeding.  But after a pelvic exam he had to shut up. He gave me pain pills and sent me home.  And told me to go to my ob/gyn.  My previous doctor is too far away so I had to find another closer to my home.  She totally understood what I was saying and suggested an ultrasound and consult with her colleque (can't spell) that does the surgeries. But she suggest the plan will probably be to remove everything that is left.  I'm not sure how to feel about this. The pain is definitely horrible now. It's like being stabbed with a knife over and over again. but it's on both sides. After reading some of the stuff I've read now I'm concerned about possibly being pregnant somewhere in my body. I've had many moments of nausea, breast swelling, stomach hardening, water retention, cravings and back pain to name a few symptoms. This has been going on for several months. I just laughed at the thought. I guess when I see the doctor next week to decide what course of action to take I better ask.  Any suggestions out there.  I don't want to still have problems the rest of my life even after another surgery.  I'm 41 now I think this has been long enough. Pray for me.
