Breast Implants with History of Breast Cancer

by Mariangela, Apr 19, 2005 12:00AM
Is breast augmentation not a good idea if you have a family history of breast cancer?  If the implant is under the muscle, are mammograms still effective in detecting cancer?  I am 50 years old, mother and grandmother both had breast cancer in their late 50s.

Your doctor is the best person to answer this in your particular case.

I believe they have methods now that make it easier to detect cancer with implants in place.  A good place to ask this is the Breast Cancer Forum.

I would advise against implants if you have family history of breast ca. They definitely do impair any diagnostic imaging methods. I have worked in a diagnostic imaging deptartment and have spoken with the doctors bouth this since I have a friend who got implants before both her grandmother and aunt were diagnosed. It's not worth it at all.
