Brown discharge and blood clots

I'm 23 and I've been menstrating since I was nine. I've been on my period for a little over a week this time around and for the few days leading up to it, I was discharging this dark brownish stuff.... I was actually relieved when I started bleeding red. But this has been very heavy... and I bleed heavilly anyway, with usually little clots. This time, the clots are just a little over quarter sized on average and I've been going through about four tampons daily. Yesterday, something about the same size as the clots came out, but it looked and felt (gross, I know, but I was scared so I checked) more like meat or tissue. This hasn't been a really painful period, which is different for me, but these other things, in addition to it having been going on for over a week, has me freaked out. What could it be? And I know I should probably see the doctor... but I'm absolutely petrified of the idea.
