Caffine and Pregnancy

Ok I know that caffine is not a good thing when you are pregnant. But I have heard many views on this topic. I am not a coffee drinker, nor do I drink pop (soda) unless I am eating pizza or McD's :) but I LOVE chocolate, and I want it more now than I did before. I was afraid to ask my Dr. b/c she said "no caffine". And I drink hot chocolate in teh winter often.  So I am seeking your help ladies. Any thoughts here? How much is OK? Is chocolate evil? :) (ha ha)

i think in moderation it would be ok... ive known several ladies who had oodles of chocolates and sodas and their babies turned out to be just fine and healthy. although, you might gain some extra weight. :)

I agree. I drank 2 cups of coffee a day when I was pregnant with my daugter, and she turned out perfectly healthy. I drank it out of neccesity though..I worked 40 hour weeks on my feet..up until the day I delivered.

I am a firm believer in listening to our bodies. If your body has a hankering for a Hershey, go for it, the key word being A as in one LOL not 2 or 3 a day. The placenta does a pretty good job of weeding out the garbage and giving baby what it needs. That's it's job. Like the other poster said, the main worry is the weight gain YOU will experience if you go overboard. Hot Chocolate and Christmas goodies are ever present right now and I think you'll find if you talk to your doctor, they will say to just go slow and not go totally crazy. Now NONE of this applies if you have a medical condition such as heart palpitations. As caffine will intensify symptoms. If that's the case then talk with doc and follow instructions to the letter.
Merry Christmas!

I am also a chocoholaic! I do not drink coffee, I gave up tea (I LOVE hot tea), but when it came to chocolate I did some research and other posters have heard it also.....If you eat chocolate when you crave it your baby will be happier than someone that craves chocolate and does not eat it.

When I heard that I stopped feeling guilty when I would eat a chocolate bar (normal size not the big bar), because I don't do ANYTHING else but the chocolate. What I do though is that I only buy one bar of whatever it is that I crave when I'm at the store, if anything, so that is one bar a week? Then I drink hot chocolate also in the winter maybe one cup per day but try to not put in as much cocco as the direction say and put almost 1/4 milk so I don't feel that guilty about that either, but truly just talk to your doctor about it and see what he/she has to say about it according to YOUR health.

Good luck and god bless you and your family this Holiday season.

Speaking of chocoholics--when I was pg. with my first, I had a chocolate craving, couldn't find any in the house, so I ate an entire BOX of baker's non-sweet baking chocolate.  Now, that's what I call desperate (and stupid, I was sick the whole next day).  So, I agree with the post that it's fine in moderation!!
Good luck, and happy holidays--

ok...heres the deal. caffien durring pregnancy isn't neccissarily a bad thing. Really, if you eat a propper diet to balance it out, there is nothing wrong with eating chocolate while pregnant. contraindication for partaking of caffien during pregnancy would be symphatic of a urinary tract infection, low iron or calcium levels or frequent headaches. If you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes then try sugar free or reduced sugar chocolates. Caffien has been noted to "eat" away your water, calcium, and iron counts. it is also notorious for causing bladder or kidney infections. If you are taking your prenates then there should be no problem with this increased craving. however, if you OBGYN has warned you of weight issues or other such things, then I would steer clear of it.
After your pregnancy is over, if you happen to have a spinal tap (or the other one where they stick a needle in your spine...i dont remember what its called right now...i'm loosin my mind.) I would suggest drinking caffinated beverages or increasing your chocolate intake. caffien helps to replace spinal fluid when its been depleted during surgery or in a tramatic situation.
