A friend of mine had ovarian cysts, but when they weren't diagnosed yet, she found that she was bleeding excessively rather than not at all. I had a scare myself (see a few dozen posts down), with missing a period for two months along with having all of my usual PMS symptoms, but nothing was happening. Well- my AF finally arrived today, late, but very welcomed (although it's trying to kill me, sorry tmi), and it turns out I either missed ovulation for a month or the stresses of moving back home from college threw it for a loop.
Here's a good site: http://www.epigee.org/health/lateperiod.html
but if you have any doubts, go see your ob-gyn! She/he is the only one who could really aid you. Good luck!
I think, and please someone correct me if this is wrong, the corpus luteum (lining of the place where the egg popped out of the ovary on your recent ovulation) can create some hormones that might interfere with your period, such as make it lighter or oddly times. This is especially if it has closed off and formed a cyst that is growing larger. I used to get ovarian cysts every now and then that would stick around a month or more, and once my doctor said when he was looking at one, "Was your last period kind of unusual?" and it had been. So I took from it that ovarian cysts can make periods odd. What I don't know is if it can prevent the period altogether.
