Can i still be pregnant even though test negative

I am 8 days late for my period so decided to take a home pregnancy test today which turned out negative.  Is there still a chance i could be pregnant.  How accurate are these test? Has anyone else been in a similar situation and found that they were in fact pregnant even though test negative?

Ok so my situation is... Oct 27th I had my period. Now its Dec 2nd and still haven't had my cycle. Took 2 preg test. They were neg. Went to the doc and test still was neg. I guess I will wait till Monday and take a blood test. I'm scared could I have somthing else wrong with me like bladder cancer or somthing???? (Yikes)....

My story is a little different.  I have had my period every month, on time, it is light, one day of heavy then gone.  I've taken 6 tests over 4 months because I keep having a nagging sensation I might be pregnant.  I feel movement, I am getting bigger, but I am also on meds I would have to stop ASAP if pregnant so I'm concerned. My son even asked me tonight if I was going to have a baby - yikes!   My PCP says the at home tests are so accurate you don't need the blood tests, especially if I am several months along.  I feel like a hypocondriac and son't know what to do.  I'm afraid I will end up on that show, "I didn't know I was pregnant".  I have two other children fyi so I know what it feels like to be pregnant.  Help!
