Can vitamins be TOO potent (PreNatal)

by momanddad, Feb 28, 2006 12:00AM
I just started taking PreNatal Vitamins yesterday -- I'm 42 yrs. old and have NO intentions of having any more children.  But I probably should be taking some sort of vitamin...are PreNatal Vitamins TOO strong?  Can you take too many vitamins?

Also, I took one yesterday afternoon and a 2nd this morning, and I already feel more energized (even with my period, which usually makes me extra tired)...could they take effect that quickly??

I would ask your doctor or call the pharmacist and ask them.

I just went on the Centrum site yesterday.  It is very informative.  If you go to this link, you will find a list of all of the vitamins and minerals contained in cenrutm.  When you click on each one, it gives you teh recommended daily allowance, but if you look where it says important information on the right hand side, it will tell you information about amounts for upper limits and problems associated with too much of each.   http://www.centrum.com/ccns/index.asp

I hope that helps you.

I would not suggest a PreNatal Vit.  I would say something like Centrum or a multivit. would be best.  You can take too much of a vit.  but most of it is usually excreted out when the body does not use it...some can be harmful to the body in excess amounts.  I would definately discuss taking an over the counter multivit with my dr.  I do not understant why they prescribed prenatals.  Best of Luck! Yes but whats the point in takin vits that the body dont need....excess is just wasted and excreeted.  I wouldnt think a prenatal vit would be appropriate for someone that is not TTC or is pregnant. I have never seen prenatals prescribed just as vits if your not TTC or already prengnat.  Also there may be a vit in the prenatals you are allergic too.  My mom is allergic to folic acid and lost weight the whole time she was pregnant with me.
