Chills, constantly cold, and low body temperature

by Mary R., Mar 11, 2007 12:00AM
I seem to be having the chills often and i am also always cold.  I am the one who has on layers of clothing when my house or the outside temperature is pretty much mild.  At time my body temp has gone down to 96.6, other then that it always seems to be at a lower degree then most people.  When i am at most worst (absolutely freezing in a 68 degree room) i seem to have terrible fatigue.  I also will get neauseous.  i also should add that my hands are always cold, the same with my feet, and are often clammy.  i must mention that the last time my blood pressure was checked (which was nov 2006) it was 90/70. Could my chillyness be from the low BP or something else.  Please help me find an answer.

Yep, your blood pressure being low can make you feel like all of the symptoms that you described. My sister was told to exercise daily and eat items with lots of salt. You may want to see a dr and get some labwork done to be sure-check for anemia and thyroid. Hope you feel better soon!

I agree with the above comment...you should have your thyroid levels checked.  Hypothyroidism causes a lower body temp and can also reduce your blood pressure.

I too suffer from cold hands and feet.  My mother had low blood pressure which I also have.  I exercise 3-5 times per week, have had my thyroid checked multiple times over the past 6 years and have always been told, it is normal.  I add low sodium salt to 75% of my meals, yet still feel cold in 70 degrees inside.  My BP after exercising is around 100/70.  Before exercising can be as low as 90/60.  I constantly struggle with my weight because my metabolism is slow.  Is this all related?

Hi There,
Check out this site above. I had very similar symptoms to the ones you are mentioning. If I ate lunch then my blood pressure would become so low that I would sleep a lot. My problem got worst about 5 years ago, and I'm now 42 years old. Since then I have been dealing with doctors trying to find an explanationg for my lack of energy, chills, etc. In addition, I started having joint pain and stiffness throughout my body and digestive problems, including alternation of dyarrhea and constipation. I am finding out now that my body temperature is low even dough I tend to sweat a lot. Maybe high cortisol or Menopause all together. My thyroid tests came out as normal, but I finally got a doctor to diagnose me with Hypothyroidism based on the symptoms, and dispite the sweatting. I am waiting for the results of ovarian cancer just to rule it out, since the symptoms of the two diseases are very similar. Go to this site above and see that some problems are interelated. I started on Levothyroxin (levothyroxine) a month ago, and I already had a big improvement. I had never believed that I had Hypo before because of the excessive sweating, but it looks like hypothyroidism overlap with other problems. Check this site and see if it is helpful to you.
My best,
Marcia
