D an C without general or local anesthesia 2- help!

Please somebody send me mail! Have you gone through a painful D and C in a doctor's office? I've had it done before to remove a fetus that wasn't alive, but in the hospital and under anesthesia. This time I went to see my doc to complain bloating and non-stop bleeding. He ordered pelvic ultrasound and later wanted to scrape my uterus for biopsy to rule out possible cancer. I didn't realise that scraping was the same thing as D and C! They just gave me 2 Tylenols beforehand and told me to expect MILD discomfort! I think I'm still in schock! Cried afterwards in the car driving home...Thinking about this daily and would like to know if this is general practise? Thank you for responding.

Hi Stiemogo

I have sympathy with what you have been through. I went to a state hospital and had a d and c with only a pain killer and found it very traumatic. I sub sequently learnt that state hospitals in south africa generally don't offer any kind of anesthetic for this procedure, it's sadly all boils down to money, as it is only offered in private hospitals to those who can private afford medical aid schemes.

I hope and pray that your pregnancy this time comes to term.

I also had a D&C without any anesthesia. OR pain medication before, during, or after the procedure. I was not hooked up to an IV, and had just suffered 3 hours of birthing a very premature baby ALONE..(miscarriage at 4 months) ...I think the hospital forgot about me. I was 19 years old, and my mother was out in the waiting room. I was alone during the D&C (without family or friends)...and yes, nurses were there to help hold me down so as not to move during the procedure as well. There was so much blood everywhere. It was dripping into a puddle onto the floor on both sides of the bed. I cried out in pain during the entire D&C. I'm now 28, and have suffered 3 miscarriages. I'm pregnant again..and my doctor beleives I will need to have my cervix sewn closed (cerclage) so as not to lose this baby. I only learned recently that I should have had anesthesia.

I am really concerned about what you have been through, and many women here. I never experienced such procedure. It is probably a good idea to ask beforehand how the procedure will be performed. I still think we have the choice to refuse the procedure, and looking for the option for anesthesia in other places.

I was assured that the procedure wouldn't take long, I could have 'something for pain', and could go home right after.  They made it sound like it was done everyday, everywhere, that way.  I didn't know any better.  I was told that the D&C should be done right away to avoid infection.  Who was I to question.  I was a lot younger then, and put my trust in the authorities.  Now, I am older and wiser, and always ask questions, no matter who is in charge, or what the situation is.  If I only knew then what I know now...

Would like to wish all the best to Bonnie40 on Monday. Thank you all for your stories and comments. It is just amazing what we ladies have to go through... It really made me feel better to know that I'm not the only one on this earth who have gone through the ingredible pain of D & C and biopsy. Maby now I can try to forget and move on...
I don't want to scare ladies out there who have to have these prosedures done for one reason or the other, but (I just learned all this from you ladies) please ask a lot of queestions and know what you are getting into. Choose the hospital setting if you can... By the way, my biopsy came back negative.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the pain.  I have a high tolerance for pain, but I was begging for the doc to stop.  The doc didn't.  I will never forget that pain.  Sorry, if this scares you, but that's my story.

See my comment on the earlier post.  D & C's and D& E's should be performed under anesthesia.  I can only say that it all boils down to money, and insurance.  My dog got better treatment at the vet than what I got for my D & C, which was performed for a miscarriage.  Mine was done at the doctor's office, without meds.  I can only say that if I had asked more questions, and called my insurance company, the procedure may have been done in a hospital under anesthesia.  But, I was distraught at the fact of losing our baby, and naive.

I have worked in two OBGYNs. They do perform the cryosurgery within the offices. D&Cs are normally performed in hospitals.
I have heard that the cryo is very painful that includes freezing  part of the cervix which is bad and than removing that part.
The Drs perform that procedure at the last part of the day because it is usually time consuming. I am sorry for women that have to go through that. In our Dr's office, medicine was not even offered to the patients.

I didn't have a D&C but did have a PAP come back abnormal. Class III and Doctor told me that Chryosurgery was the treatment. I was 24 years old and 8 weeks postpartum from delivering my 2nd daughter. I was scared and naive and did whatever the doctor told me to do. Went into the office where the procedure was to take place, put on a gown, and was told taht I would experience some mild discomfort. I wasn't even given a Tylenol. And for anyone here who has given birth and knows what it feels like to have your cervix dialated to 10 cm. well it hurts even worse when you aren't having a baby, because after going thru it you don't have a positive result hearing a baby cry. I wasn't told before hand that my cervix would have to be totally opened to do the chryo. I was told NOTHING. And then the actual freezing of the cervix, I can't even put the pain level into words. After it was over, my husband had to carry me out to the car where I vomited over and over again. I NEVER returned to that doctor again. That was in 1994, not 1904. NOT even a baby aspirin. Now the kicker. The doctor, the one that tortured me... was a WOMAN!
I have NO idea why some doctors are so cruel. It is scary.

I had a D&C and a uteran biopsy without pain meds I was offered 2 advil afterwards and the nurse got those from her purse. I did not take them but they had someone in the room to hold my hands so I could not get up. You would think if they knew to have someone there that they should give something for pain. I too cried on the way home. I go for a hysterectomy on Monday the 28th at UVA medical  center. Hope that goes better.

Is your DR a legit Dr. That is unheard of where I come from. Especially the 2 tylenol thing. I would want it done in a hospital to prevent the risk of infection. I would not have done it that way. I don't know the experience of other women and what they have gone through but normally this procedure is definately done within a hospital. After the procedure, did he even give you any antibiotics because if he didn't, you are risking infection and jepordizing any chances of becoming pregnant again.
WOW! It amazes me with what these DRS are doing and I classify this as neglect toward the patient. MY OPINION.
