Depo Provera and Birth Control, PLEASE ANSWER!!!

I have been on depo provera for a year or so now and I just told my doctor the other day I wanted to get off of it because I've gained too much weight since being on it...
he put me directly on the birth control pill Yasmin which I used to take. My other depo shot wasn't due until September 24 because I just got one in July. If I'm taking Yasmin at the same time will it make the shot ineffective and me be more likely to get pregnant? He said I would still be protected so I guess I should still be, but I figured I'd ask some other people as well.
