I used Depo Provera for about 2 years and during that time I never really had a "period". I had occasions, usually after intercourse, where I had breakthrough bleeding that was kind of brownish looking. I would naturally think that was going to be the period and prepare with pads and such, then it went away as fast as it came. My gyn told me this was normal with Depo. Now this was in 1995-1997, so I don't know if it's changed since then.
The depo shot causes spotting and bleeding, sometimes for months on end. It's a (awful)side effect for some people. See how it goes for the first 3 months and then decide if this form of birth control is right for you.
i was on depo for 3 years and experienced no periods or spotting. however the nurse who gave the injections always told me that its quite normal to have spotting. some peoples periods continue as normal however! be warned when comin off depo ur periods may still not happen for a while. i went a year after comin off it before my periods started again!
