Dermoid cyst

I have a dermoid cyst on my right ovary, it's about 2.5cm or a little bigger. I just had a bisopy for uterus and cervix cancer, it was negative. I also had a C125 blood test and it was negative.
I have laparoscopy scheduled on Jan 26. I still have regular periods. I have recently read about all the different things are ovaries do. I want to keep my ovary, enless it is damaged or there is cancer.
The doctor said they take out the ovary to avoid the dermoic cyst breaking inside of the body.
My question is can they take out the dermoid cyst and leave my ovary via the laparoscopy? Do I have to have the open surgery if I want to keep my ovary? Has anyone had laparoscopy with a dermoid cyst and keep thier ovary?
