Does a miscarriage cause alot of physical pain?

I have never miscarried before but I am having a lot of pain. Last night for about three hours I was having contractions, my husband was watching the clock and they were coming and going every 1-2 minutes and they were really painful and tight, I felt like I was in labor but without a baby. I dont know whats going on. I miscarried Sunday night. My obgyn comfirmed on thursday that is what happened to me but now I am having alot of pain. Last night the contractions lasted about 3 hours and all of a sudden stopped when I stood up and had a big gush of blood. I dont understand what is happening. I called the doctor and the doctor on call highly suggested me to go to the hospital but the pain stopped when I gushed so I didnt go. But I keep on bleeding. But it's not like plain blood, its like a really clear like mucous mixed up with blood. Today I am cramping and still bleeding. Do I need to get some rest instead of trying to do my housework? i dont know what to expect my doctor didnt say anything about getting extra rest she just said take some ibuprofen for cramping. Can anyone give me some advice? How long does one usually bleed when they have a miscarriage?

I'm very sorry that you are going thru this right now.

If you are very early on, m/c is just like a heavy period with cramps. But if you are further (I had my m/c at close to 4 months) I was in pain...just like labor pain. Contractions just like labor until the contents of the uterus were expelled, then it stopped.

You should go to the ER because all of the stuff may not have come out. I had to have a d&c because all of the stuff didn't come out and it got infected...

Go get checked out, and good luck to you. Sorry again!

Yes, it's very common to have cramping/pain with a m/c. On and off bleeding and pain is normal also. Your body is going through a lot right now so yes, take it easy for a few days. If the pain gets to be too much with pain meds then go in. Or if the bleeding is just too much to deal with the go in. You may need a D&C to get everything out. Give it till monday if you can and then go see your reg. Dr and ask them for an ultrasound to make sure everything is out or then can help you if you are still in a lot of pain.sometimes a natural m/c can go on for weeks or more. Ask your Dr. about the option of a D&C if it's jsut too much to handle. I'm sorry you are going through this. You will be in my thoughts. But yes, rest as much as you can and ask your hubby to pitch in a little if he can.
Take care...

Becerra:  Miscarriages have a tendancy of being very, very painful...the kind of pain you will remember for a long time to come.  I'm being deeply honest, having had three myself, it doesn't get any easier.  You will bleed for a little over a week, that is not abnormal...there will be cramps for a few days afterward of varying intensity, if you bleed more than what it takes to fill a pad or tampon in an hour or so, go to your doctor *immediately*.

If you start to get a fever, if you feel weak or dizzy, or show signs of infection, go back to your doctor.  If your bleeding lasts over a week, go back to your doctor.  The best thing for you to do right now is try to stay active, (a little bit of movement will not cause too much pain, and you won't be sitting around focusing on it), but it's obviously not a good idea to run a marathon or anything.

Part of what you are passing isn't blood, but most likely ambionic fluid, the liquid that the fetus floats in and breathes.  (See also, what the 'water' is when your 'water breaks' during pregnancy.)  If the liquid is ANYTHING BUT the colors you associate with your period, or smells very foul or infected, go back to your doctor, as it could be signs of infection.

Best thing is to take a little bit of painkillers, and keep moving with your daily, mundane life.  Don't dwell/fixate if you can help it.  Business as usual, lady, but at the same time, I feel sympathy for you and the pain I know you're going through.  Take it easy, so to speak.

If the On Call Doc said you should go to the hospital then you should go. The gush was most likely from blood pooling up inside the uterus and most likely will build up again. You may need a D&C and there are also IV medications that can help, but you need to go in and find out what is going on.
So sorry this is happening to you and let us know how you are doing. Now go to the hospital!!

I had a m/c in June at 11 weeks, and it was painful, felt a lot like labor, but my contractions bunched up to one big one right before it happened and then I was done.  A few days later I was still in a lot of pain and started to cramp heavily again and passed some more tissue, but felt much better after that.  Could be that you haven't lost it all yet, I would call your Dr. again and see if you can get in for a check up, couldn't hurt, especially since you are gushing blood like that.  Take care of yourself.

I know this is an old post but i have one child already and have recently had a missed abortion then a complete miscarraige (miscarriage) ...and the pain i had from a 10 week miscarriage hurt worse then my previous labor pains! with my 1st i was in labor 18 hrs and went 14 hrs w/o anything- the pain from the miscarriage was UNBEARABLE cramping and contractions. I honestly thought i was going to die *and i consider myself tough, Then i passed the entire fetal sac and placenta -which felt just like a regular birth, it was horrendous and scary. Thank God i had an awesomely supportive husband to hold and help me through it, Go with your gut- if you feel something is wrong- its better to be safe than sorry.

i had a misscarriage 4 weeks ago. i was 5 weeks from LMP. started bleeding lightly. so i went to the hospital, they did a urine test and told me i was pregnant and to go back in 2 days for scan and blood test. during them 2 days  i bled lightly. went back did both scans couldnt see anything, in uterus did blood test was 146 came back 2 days later bleeding still lightly. my hgc levels had gone down to 40. told i was misscarring. later that day started getting quite bad camps in abdoman. that night woke up to excruciating pain in abdoman and below for 3 hours. contracting every 1-2 mins. the pain was so bad i was curled up into a ball and panting. but i never got any heaveir bleeding during the misscarrige at any time, or nothing came out when i felt like i was contracting.  I have never had a natural birth before both my children were c-sections. the next 2 days bled a little the pain had stopped and then the bleeding. hope this help x
