First Tampon

I just started my period yesterday. My mom is a nurse and told me to wear a tampon. I put one in yesterday. It hurt so bad. I guess I didn't put it in far enough because when I peed it expanded. I find it highly uncomfortable to walk, sit, or bend when a tampon is in. I'm 13 and have no one home but my 11 year old little brother. I tried to put one in this morning and wore it to my hair appointment.  I have no more pads. We only had 5 because my mom only wears tampons. HELP ),;

it is normal to have some pain and discomfort when 1st using tampons. I agree with the previous poster you should try a tampon with a plastic applicator...and you make you more comfortable try a tampon for a lite flow...these are smaller and may feel a little better for you while you're starting out. You may need to change it more often if you're experiencing a heavy or moderate flow. This is what i did the 1st few times i used tampons and after a couple periods i tried using a regular sized tampon with no problems. It just takes time

Well ask her to get you pads. The tampon may be too big for you too. Ask your mom to take you to the store.

You're right, it isn't in far enough. I found that when trying tampons for the first time it's best if you use one that has a plasitc applicator, as the slide easier. OB brand doesn't have an applicator, but at least with those ones you can "feel" if it's in the right spot for you.
Is it possible for you to wear one long enough to make it to a nearby store to buy pads instead? Pads are much better for young women who are just starting to menstruate.
You say your mom is a nurse...she should know that most young women have problems with using tampons at first...perhaps she has forgotten what it's like to start off.
I would call her if possible, and ask her to pick up some pads on the way home.
If you can't stand the tampons and it's going to be awhile before she gets home or whatever, you could use paper towel in your underwear or a facecloth...after all, that's all
women had in the "old days"...just a cloth.
