Found out I have HSV1

I had a western blot test done which showed postive for HSV1 - but I don't know the site of infection.  I don't ever remember having a cold sore or any type of outbreak.  I've never been worried about passing anything on, but I've been with my boyfriend for a while now and I'm very afraid to perform oral sex on him, due to not knowing if I can transmit the virus.  Previous relationships have never been a bother about oral sex, but now I'm afraid.

I really want to perform oral on my boyfriend but don't want to risk spreading - I don't know wheather the HSV1 infection is from when I was young and just never experienced and outbreak or what.  My family has had coldsores their entire life, brothers and father, but not me.  Any advice???

Say, he has HSV1, can I still transmit the virus anywhere else?

Please help - I hate this!

Just thought you might like to know that if you take LLysine 500mg daily this greatly reduces the risk of getting cold sores. Its an amino acid the body cant produes enough of and we dont get enough in normal diet. It really works.

I get cold sores too.. Just dont give him oral if you can feel a sore coming on- usually tingly, itchy kind of feeling & def dont while you have the open sore..  Really I hear its rare to pass it by oral.  If you do get cold sores, I use abreva seems to work like a charm!  Most people have the virus & arent even aware of it.  Dont stress too much (that can also cause a breakout)  =)

HSV1 is so common, it's a good probability that your boyfriend has it as well.  I think something like 80-90% of the population has it.  From what I have heard, if you have oral HSV1 it is very unlikely that it would transmitted to the genital region.  If you family has it is a good probability that you got it during childhood.  If you are worried about your boyfriend getting it genitally, he should get a HSV antibody test to see if he has it.  If he does then you have nothing to worry about it.

I found this on the STD forum that someone had posted about getting HSV 1 on the genitals.

"Forum Doc HHH - In adults, HSV-1 shows up on the genital primarily from oral sex by someone with oral herpes."

Apparantly you can get give HSV 1 to you bf's genitals if you perform oral sex on him.  Just don't do it if you have a cold sore or feel one coming on.  But, you also need to let him know that you do have HSV 1 so he can be aware of the situation when you get a cold sore and doesn't pressure you.  Many many people have HSV 1, it's very common.
