Gyno question

I have an odour down there it tends to smell kind of fishy. Not all the time but day to day it changes ... my dr. tells me i have high yeast. and my bf says when he gives oral sex it can be very sour... this is a very uncomfertable situation for me and embarassing. What is this odour and how can I stop it?

I had Bv and thought it had went away cause I felt better. I went back for a check up and found out I still had it. This has been with me for 2 months. I have taken flagyl twice, am currently on my 2nd dose. Does anyone know how long this can last? or how many times flagyl has to be taken to make it go away? my doctor doesn't give me a straight answer, just says the flagyl will work & it will go away. Is it permanent? Also I was told that when you get your period, it makes it come back...has anyone experienced this?

That's true, although some women have HPV reactivate in the future.

Regardless, I definitely think managed care and the need to cut costs has significantly affected the levels/frequency of medical tests, etc. If nothing else, it's certainly driven a lot of studies on appropriate testing intervals ;-)

quote fro monkey flower:
On the other hand, I think they now say women in completely monogamous relationships, who've had a series of clear paps, can wait two or three years between pap smears. 'Course, I suspect a lot of these kinds of studies are driven by managed care.

There is sound science behind this. If you are in a long term, completely monogamous relationship and have not been diagnosed with HPV, the risk of cervical cancer decreases alot.

After rereading your original post, I take back the "have your doctor call something in" comment. It sounds like you haven't had a pap smear in quite some time, so you NEED to go for a complete pelvic exam. Pap smears screen for cervical cancer, which is mostly caused by HPV. Many women actually died from cervical cancer before the advent of the pap smear and before annual pap smears became routine.

On the other hand, I think they now say women in completely monogamous relationships, who've had a series of clear paps, can wait two or three years between pap smears. 'Course, I suspect a lot of these kinds of studies are driven by managed care.

Actually, hardly any doctors will treat guys for BV, although it often seems specific to certain partners. It's NOT a STD. BV is an imbalance of bacteria in your vagina, and that's all it is. Douching exacerbates the problem because it further alters the normal bacteria in your vagina. And the fishy smell after unprotected intercourse is from the interaction between semen (alkaline) and your vaginal fluids, not from his semen itself.

Many doctors will just call something in if you have very specific problems and/or they know you've had experience with this before. Your symptoms are pretty classic for BV, so s/he might just call in a prescription for you.

DOUCHING IS VERY BAD FOR YOUR BODY AND THAT IS PROB WHAT HAS CAUSED THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE.

SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE BV, A BACTERIAL INFECTION. CALL YOUR DOCTOR AND TELL THEM EVERYTHING, I DIDN'T EVEN HAVE TO BE SEEN THEY JUST CALLED IN A PRESCRIPTION FOR IT AND THAT CLEARED IT UP.

CONSIDERING YOUR BOYFRIEND HAS BEEN GIVING YOU ORAL WHILE THIS IS GOING ON AND PROB INTERCOURSE HAS HAPPENED, HE NEEDS TO BE SEEN BY HIS DOCTOR BECAUSE THAT CAN BE PASSED TO HIM JUST AS EASLY. AND IF ONLY YOU GETS TREATMENT AND NOT HIM THEN YOU WILL JUST CATCH IT AGAIN.

ALSO YOU COULD GET A PH BALANCE CREAM THAT CAN HELP ALL THE DAMAGE THAT YOU HAVE DONE DOWN THERE WITH THE DOUCHE. THAT CAN BE PICKED UP AT ANY PHARMACY.

THIS IS FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE.

Another thing, they treat it with metronidazol you can take it orally or use the gel (vaginally.) Since it is an antibiotic, it may produce a yeast infection, so ask your doctor for the diflucan pill just in case.  (If infact this windes up being your diagnosis.)

Douching can definatley cause bacterial vaginosis and so can sex but it is NOT an std.  Go to your doctor for the treatment.  It can be hard to get rid of and you may need to be treated a couple of times, but for your saftey just go to the doctor.  Your health should take priority even though we may dread the doctors.  Again if it is bacterial vaginosis, it is NOT an std.  Not to frighten you/ but some std's can produce a fishy smell with discharge, like trich. But if you and your partner are monogomous I doubt thats the case.  Good Luck!

If you have a fishy smell and it smells worse after sex you definetely have bacterial vaginosis.  This is caused by an inbalance in the normal vaginal flora.  You probably got this from douching.  Douching not only kills the bad bacteria but also the good bacteria.  You need to go to your docor and get checked out.  While this is not an STD it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease if let untreated which can cause infertility.  When you go to the doctor they will prescribe you antibiotics to get rid of it.

Do you have discharge?  Fishy smell indicates some kind of bacterial infection, such as bacteria vaginosis.  Yeast doesnt have a strong unpleasant smell.  Have you been to your doctor recently?  As he suspected anything other then yeast?
