HELP

Eww, this is so gross, but I have white stuff coming out of my vagina. I have never had my period, and I'm twelve. What is this? What does it mean? Does this have anything to do with periods?

Well, yes and no, and for what it's worth, I was very annoyed to figure out when I was 12 that this is part and parcel with being female.  I wondered how adult women could ever even do jumping jacks, if this is what comes out.

OK, here is what it is -- vaginal secretions.  They clean your vagina, gravity drops them down, and out they come.  This is a good thing!  When a woman gets past menopause, all of that dries up, and she sighs and remembers the days when her vagina was lush and juicy.  lol

It sort of has to do with periods in the sense that as you come into puberty, it's all connected.  Your vagina does get more lush, and that is good.  The body keeps it fresh and clean by having the vagina produce protective secretions.  That is annoying if you hate seeing the fluid come out in your underwear.  But it's no big deal if it does come out in your underwear, and you do get used to it.

Your secretions will be milky and thin and dry either yellowish or greenish white.  Once a month for a few days, they will thicken up and get very clear, like raw eggwhite.  When that happens, it means you are ovulating, and an egg will be getting ready to sproing out of your ovary and find its way to your uterus, in hopes of getting a nice date there with a sperm and turning into an embryo.  I don't recommend doing this for a decade or more, but that is what the biology is.  Once you do begin to ovulate (if you're alert, you'll see the change in your vaginal secretions), the rule is, two weeks after ovulation is the first day of your period.

You probably aren't ovulating yet, since you haven't seen a period yet.  But the secretions you are seeing suggest it will happen pretty soon.

Honey, I know it's irritating at first, but a) you do get used to it, and how to manage it (pantiliners are handy if you really hate it), and b) it's great being a female, you'll love being a woman!  It's a really small price to pay for the fun you'll have with your beautiful new changes.

If the white stuff coming out of your vagina is clumpy, like say, cottage cheese (I know-really gross) then you may have a yeast infection. You will know because your vagina, as well as the area around the outside of the opening, will be fiery red and hurt like the devil! If this is the case, get yourself to the nearest pharmacy for some Monistat or generic equivalent. You'll start feeling better and the discharge will be gone before you know it.
To minimize the occurrence of these nasty infections, avoid tight jeans, prolonged wearing of wet bating suits, nylon panties, etc. In other words, don't give those pesky little yeast-ies a hot, damp, unventilated place to go nuts if you can help it!
