Had my Mirena IUD removed

Had my Mirena IUD removed

by Wisegirl, Mar 08, 2007 12:00AM
Had it removed 4 weeks ago exactly due to terrible problems from it. I wont post my story unless you want to know. Last week I had pain on my left ovary and today pain on my right. Its almost like a pinching feeling. Leads me to believe it (they) are cysts. When I normally am not on BC I have 28 day cycle. But not sure what to think since just having the IUD removed. Anyone have experience with this ?

What problems did you have?

I had the mirena for 4.5 yrs. Once I had it removed I did not have a period for 3 months and like you I had pinching etc...They performed a scan and no cysts found...

by Wisegirl, Mar 08, 2007 12:00AM
I got the IUD on 3/21/06 and loved it ! Insertion was painful but not terrible. I loved not having to worry about pills, patches, condoms whatever. Well about 1 month after getting it I developed acne. It wasnt terrible but I never had acne before. I figured it was from the hormone in the IUD. I could deal with that. In mid - July I developed a yeast infection that would not go away. (I also had one in April but it went away with meds) I had it from July-Sept and even after that I would have bouts of itching and irritation. My dr's told me it was from one of the following detergent, soap or toilet paper. I have always used free & clear detergent, Dove soap for sensitive skin and Angel Soft toilet tissue. They told me to change them one by one until I found out what was causing the irritation. I didnt do that, I figured I have been using these forever why would I need to change now ? I asked if it could be from the IUD and was told no it wasnt a side effect. So everytime I got it I would treat with OTC. They went on until I had it removed. I started suffering with depression, irritability and complete exhaustion. My hair also started falling out and I was having memory loss. I can compare the memory loss with the type you suffer during pregnancy. The one who took the brunt of my mood change was my 8 year old. I was unable to cope with him being 8 and acting they way he did. I swear I think I really could have beaten him, I wanted to. I have gotten to the point where I did push and shove him. I lost my sex drive. It didnt decrease it left completely. I didnt have sex for 2 months at a time. I had no desire for it. When I gave in to DH it was extremely painful. I did want to be with my husband but my body refused.
I did some internet research and came across forums of women who were having the same issues as me ! Some were more severe and they needed depression medications (which btw werent working). I decided that I needed to get this removed ASAP. I called the dr and 2 days later it was removed on 2/8/07. Removal was not painful at all. When the dr questioned me on why I wanted the device removed I told him the story. Do you know what he said to me ? That these are not side effects of the Mirena. BULLSH.IT !! I see it as my body did everything it could to fight off this foreign object inside of me. That day he asked me when the last time i had an infection and I told him just on Monday that I was itching. So he took a culture and what a surprise I had a bacterial infection !! He told me once again that it was from my soap and not the IUD. Gave me a prescription for some vaginal gel. Which I didnt use and guess what ?? The itching and irriatation were gone ! 2 days later my mood returned to normal. I have not had clumps of hair come out in my hands. I can sleep 6-8 hours and feel great ! I can go from the living room to the kitchen and remember why I was going there ! 11 days after removal my sex drive returned full force ! DH is very happy. I am still dealing with the acne but its slowly going away. It seems to be like a cystic acne.

OMG you had some problems...I thought it was great, no periods at all. I have many friends and even my sister with it fitted and they all think its the best thing they could have done. I have read about other people with mood swings and weight gain though. I was informed that the hormone release was minimal. It had to be because i am allergic to the pill etc...I guess we are all  so different though and as I said I did read about other people having problems...

by jenstam, Mar 08, 2007 12:00AM
I had mirena for about 6 months and it was the worst 6 months of my life!!! I kept telling the doctor all of the problems I was experiencing were due to the mirena iud but she didn't think I was right. So I finally had her take it out and got the copper t iud and LOVED IT! I will get that after this baby is born again. No problems whatsoever and no hormones to mess with. Mirena was a nightmare. I'm sorry to hear you are having problems still. I didn't have any once that beast was removed!

by taysmommy, Mar 08, 2007 12:00AM
i had a bad experience with the mirena as well, i had it removed on jan 12, i was having side cramps, and i couldnt find my strings, the doc said that it had somehow got lodged in there and was poking me on my right side, i noticed this in december but he wouldnt take it out, he said wait one more month, it was the most painful month of my life! i will never use it again! and also i was ttc, i bleed for two days after it was taken out, then ovulated 14 days later, was suposed to start on the 10th of feb, but didnt and still im not pregnant, so i think it may have messed with me somehow, and i still dont know why af is a month late! grrr i hate the iud

by kaydiane, Mar 08, 2007 12:00AM
your periods will take some time to get back to normal...
I really can't believe all these bad experiences, I had mine removed to try for a baby and I want it back again as soon as I have had a baby. before the mirena my little sis had bled for 18mths continuously she has pcos. After 8 weeks with the mirena, nothing..she thibnks its a miracle. I guess we are lucky.Baby dust to ya xx

by AndiJ78, Mar 08, 2007 12:00AM
Same here, I had a wonderful experience with Mirena. The hormones are incredibly low, I cannot imagine that the problem can be directly related to that alone. Heck, reading wisegirl's post sounded like everything I am going through now being 4 mos post delivery with my son and i don't even have the Mirena as my dh got fixed in Dec. oI have even considered getting it placed again anyway once I wean and my af resumes as it made it so much easier to deal with af.

I will still endorse it as I know far more with good experiences than bad. No one form works for everyone, it is always hit and miss.

by Wisegirl, Mar 08, 2007 12:00AM
Well Andi they ARE directly related to the Mirena. You can yourself call Berlex and they will advise you of these side effects which are more common then they origiannly had stated on the information. Thats why there is a class action suit against them.

by AndiJ78, Mar 08, 2007 12:00AM
interesting, I hadn't heard and i am usually pretty current on that kind of info. Well, at least the symptoms are gone now, right? No need to get snippy, I was just commenting that they sounded like PP symptoms, much like i experience every time I have a baby.

by Wisegirl, Mar 08, 2007 12:00AM
Remember they thought the patch was "safe" too. Although I never had any problems with that. But knowing now what it can cause I would not go back on it.

Do a search on Mirena IUD forums and you will be surprised at the amount of women that are enduring these effects. Some way worse than mine.

by Wisegirl, Mar 08, 2007 12:00AM
No baby dust for me LOL !!  I'm not TTC. I just wanted relief !!  NFP here now !

by lovethebops, Mar 08, 2007 12:00AM
Whoa!! This is a very interesting post..I had no idea...Wise girl...Can i have the baby dust, I AM ttc, LOL!! I had considered Mirena after I gave birth to #1, but was afraid of the whole IUD thing, so i went back on the same pill i was on before i got pregnant. I think it is good to hear all sides of the story, and i know I will never try Mirena, pills work better for me anyways.( well they did before i was ttc, lol:} Hope you are feeling better soon and back on track, Take care..

The same sort of thing went on years ago about silicone breast implants.  Millions were paid out in class action suits.  Horrible symptoms all over the place.  Guess what?  Not a single study has ever conclusively linked them with any health problem.

It is extremely common for women to have hormone disruptions that can cause every one of your symptoms.  If you believe strongly that something is the cause, and you take that thing away, 99% of the time the symptoms will clear up, too.

I'm not going to say its impossible, b/c very few things in life are impossible.  But unlikely.  Lets say that.

Mirena does have minute amounts of hormones that act locally on the uterine lining.  And the patch is still in use, and is safe and effective if used in properly selected patients.  It is very different than Mirena, it is a systemically absorbed hormone.  You can't compare the two.

If you believe the Mirena is the cause of all your symptoms, then its a good thing you got rid of it.  What are you going to use instead?

by Wisegirl, Mar 09, 2007 12:00AM
To: peekawho
I have been on Depo, Lunelle (off the market now), various pills (mini & dual hormone), patch and now the Mirena. This is spanned over 19 years. Out of all those only the Mirena caused any problems.

I didnt compare Mirena with the patch. What I said was remember they thought the patch was "safe" too. Nothing was said in 2001 that there was an increased chance of blood clots. Not just an increase but double the chance. I know because I was on it the day it hit the shelves. Its still my preffered method but since I am almost 35 I am hesitant to go back on it. I know they are in the works of another patch. Its in clinical testing.

Nothing was said about these side effects of the Mirena but ironically if you call Berlex 1-888-237-5394 they will tell you they are known side effects. I called their adverse reaction line and thats how I found out they were indeed side effects and my dr didnt even know about them.

Back in 1996(ish) there was a class action lawsuit against Norplant for playing down such side effects as irregular menstrual bleeding, nausea, headaches and depression. People were not adequately warned of the extent of these side effects.

So the bottom line is I will continue to the best of my ability to tell my story to try and stop women from getting this device. If I stop 1 than than I win.

by peekawho, Mar 09, 2007 12:00AM
To: Wisegirl
If you read the known adverse effects of any drug on the market, you will no doubt be horrified.  People die every day from Tylenol.  This does not mean that Tylenol should be off the market, or that people should be warned away from using it.

Mirena is a safe and effective contraceptive device used by hundreds of thousands of women.  It even being used globally now to help prevent unwanted pregnancies in disadvantaged nations.  Far more women are harmed, or even die, as a result of pregnancy than experience some hair loss, depression, menstrual irregularities, or acne from a very widely used and effective device.

Even placebos can give people "side effects".  I'm not saying its impossible that you are having some minor effects.  But the Mirena acts LOCALLY, not SYSTEMICALLY.  Remember my analogy of the silicone breast implants?  Remember the tearful testimony before Congress of all the women irreparably "harmed" by them?  As I said, furthur studies show this had no basis in fact.  Group hysteria and suggestibility was responsible for a great deal of those symptoms.  Yet people profited from the lawsuits.  They sure as heck didn't give the money back, did they?

The fact that a couple hundred women are starting a class action suit is testimony only to our countries insatiable appetite for lawsuits.  Warn women away from this effective BC device, and I hope that they don't subsequently become harmed from using a systemic hormone, or have complications from an unwanted pregnancy.  Or choose to have an abortion.

Good for you for having it removed if you feel uncomfortable with it.  We are only responsible for our own actions.

by peekawho, Mar 09, 2007 12:00AM
And that is not to say its the right choice for every woman.  But it IS a choice, and a viable one.  The fact a fraction of women experience some discomfort does not change that fact.  If someone tries it, and for whatever reason doesn't like it, the she should get it removed.

BTW, you didn't answer.  What will you be substituting for BC now?  I could share my copper 7 horror story, but I recognize that that was only MY experience, and does not necessary lead to the assumption no one should use it.  Its a good method too, despite what happened to me.

by Wisegirl, Mar 09, 2007 12:00AM
I NEVER said it should be removed from the mmarket. However it should have all major side effects listed. You may not think depression is a big deal, but it is. Or cystic acne being a big deal, but it is. Or the ovarian cysts I now have, But they are. and they hurt like h.ell. How would you like your hair falling out in clumps ? I dont think you would. How about having memory blackouts ? Not a good thing. How about not wanting sex ? My DH didnt like that aspect. How about finally having it and it being painful ? That wasnt good for me. Would you go on a birth control if you KNEW they were known side effects ?? I think not. BTW-I had no problem with irregular menstral bleeding, that I was expecting. I had some but it wasn't terrible. Its everything else that was the issue.

As for "Far more women are harmed, or even die, as a result of pregnancy ..... "
Not in this day and age.

by Wisegirl, Mar 09, 2007 12:00AM
Right now I am thinking of going with NFP (gulp) and good old condoms. I have also heard horror stories of the copper IUD as far as bleeding (my dr also told me), also having the greater risk of uterine perforation. I would like to go back on the patch but I am older and the risk now scares me because I have an 8 year old as well as a 2 yr old. I despise taking pills but will if I have to. Which is precisely why I loved the patch.

by peekawho, Mar 09, 2007 12:00AM
I can almost guarantee you that all those things are not due to the Mirena.  However, if you believe they are, then more power to you.  I will be very interested to see if you remain miraculously healed of all your many maladies over the coming weeks.  Or will you become one of those women who believe that a temporary device ruined your health forever?

Would you ever take a Tylenol if you were prominently warned that you could die?  People take them every day.  Yet some die.

You honestly believe that pregnancy carries little or no risk to health?  It does; even "in this day and age".  I work in Labor and Delivery, and care for the complications every day.  I've even seen a death. In this day and age.  And that's in the US.  Lets not talk about Africa or other under developed nations.

Do what you want.  But don't hurl your scare tactics at others.  The "side effects" are VERY UNCOMMON.  If they were devastating millions as they are you, Mirena would be off the market in a heartbeat.

As I SAID, if someone believes it isn't right for them, they can remove it.  Simple as that.

I never said your problems weren't a "big deal".  Obviously, you feel very affected by them.  But THE VAST MAJORITY of women who use Mirena don't have them, or have them to a very minor degree.

Just like most people who take Tylenol don't die or have liver failure.  Its still a safe drug, and  no one goes around screaming for people to avoid it.  It has improved countless lives.

I can see this will go nowhere but downhill.  You feel a great need to "win" this argument.  I'll wait and see if you remain free of the devastating depression, hair loss, ovarian cysts, and loss of libido.  I have most of those things too, and I'm not even on BC.

Oh, and I bet you get pregnant within 6 months.  Bet you anything.  I know 2 other women who didn't like their forms of BC.  They quit, and used "natural" methods.  They were pregnant almost immediately.  Often times, there is an occult desire to conceive again, and some women need to feel it was "out of their control"--they couldn't use effective BC.  So it doesn't look like they chose to conceive again.

You "win".  I won't answer again.  I'll wait and see the BFP post.

by kaydiane, Mar 10, 2007 12:00AM
I agree - I have recommended the use of the mirena to so many people and they all love it.I also got pregnant very soon after having it removed, so no long term recovery. I honestly thought it was fantastic, very comfortable, no periods, no worry of pregnancy and no effects from the hormones that I am allergic to. If the mirena does cause cysts I can't understand why they would give it to my sister who has been suffering for so long due to polycystic overies...The normal pill made my tongue swell so bad i stopped breathing, yet millions use it  - I had a very rare allergy to the hormones. It was also explained that the mirena is safe from that as it doesn't release the hormone into your system.

Each to their own but I wouldn't like people to be scared of trying it because they read some negative feedback.

I have first hand experience of the placebo effect as I was part of a clinical trial and unknown to me I had a placebo. Some other people in my group had the real thing and started to feel ill. All of a sudden so did I. To me it was very real, I didn't think that I had a placebo. Once I was told and shown the paperwork my symptoms went.It is therefore very possible to feel symptoms just because others feel them.

by Wisegirl, Mar 10, 2007 12:00AM
I am not planning on getting pregnant and am taking every natural step to prevent it.

You seem like a fairly intelligent person and you shouldn't always belive everything you are told by medical professionals. They are only instructed by the pharmacutical companies.

Do your research !

by Wisegirl, Mar 10, 2007 12:00AM
As for NFP. I know people who have been doing it for 12+ years without an incident. But you have to stick to it. So if you know your body, like I do mine, there isnt a problem.

Your right you aren't going anywhere with this argument because it wasn't you. I will continue to tell my story in hopes that women will be smart enough to do all the research. Not just want their dr's tell them.

by lovethebops, Mar 10, 2007 12:00AM
AMEN!!

by kaydiane, Mar 10, 2007 12:00AM
I hope that this helps some to make sense of it all . Just a little bit of info

Research - NOT FROM PHARMACUTICAL COMPANIES NOT FROM BERLEX - INDEPENDANT STUDIES FROM REAL WOMEN.

The Mirena IUS is like many other types of Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices (IUCD's) in that it is fitted by a doctor and remains in the womb for a fixed amount of time, after which it must be changed. It is different, however, in that it is much more effective than usual IUCD's and avoids many of the side effects that put women off this choice of contraception.

How Effective is the Contraception?

1000 women used the Mirena IUS for a year, only one fell pregnant. This compares with 10 for the normal IUCD, 20 for the Pill and 10-15 for the injection (Depo Provera). This is comparable to the effectiveness of sterilisation.

Mirena acts as a contraceptive in two ways: it makes the mucus at the neck of the womb (the cervix) much thicker, preventing sperm from getting through and it also makes the lining of the womb extremely thin, stopping implantation. In some women it prevents egg release (ovulation).

A. Side effects with Mirena are most common during the first three months after insertion and decrease over time.
SIDE EFFECTS AT                3 MONTHS AT 5 YEARS
Lower abdominal pain (cramping) 10.5%         2.0%
Acne or other skin problems      3.5%         1.8%
Back pain                        3.1%          1.0%
Breast tenderness                 3.1%         1.0%
Headache                          2.8%         1.6%
Mood changes                     2.5% Less than 1.0%

Percentage of women reporting side effects during the first 3 months and fifth year of use.
CLINICAL STUDIES BY WOMENS HEALTH - INDEPENDANT
Ovarian Cysts: Progestagen hormones increase the chance of benign, simple ovarian cysts. This is more common with the higher hormone levels associated with the  pill. Overall the risk is about 3 times higher with the pill (1.2% in IUS Mirena users versus 0.4% normally). These cysts most often do not require any treatment and resolve on their own over 2-3 months. It is usual to arrange follow-up ultrasound scans over this time if they do occur.

Hormonal Problems: Although the IUS delivers its hormone directly to the lining of the womb, it does lead to a slight increase in progesterone levels in the blood stream. The levels are much lower than that found with the pill and usually don't lead to side effects. In our study we found that when they do occur, they are mild and only last up to 4-6 weeks

With small to moderate size fibroids, it is quite reasonable to use the IUS and our study has found that fibroids are less common in women who use the Mirena. A further paper has found that in a sample of 5 women studied, a Mirena actually reduced the size of their fibroids.

by kaydiane, Mar 10, 2007 12:00AM
So to sum up - Yes there are side effects, these side effects continue after 3 months for a very small percentage of people. Yes it can enlarge follicles but again in a small percentage of people, lower than the pill in fact. These follicles(cysts) Correct themselves in most cases. Yes there may be changes in moods for approx 4-6 weeks but this will settle - far worse with the pill etc..

All meds have side effects, these side effects do not out way the benefits in my opinion. It is about personal choice .

by divine30, Jun 22, 2007 11:35PM
I had all the side effects as WiseGirl did, and more.  I had my Mirena IUD taken out last week after having it for 1 year.   I was very healthy before then. Some of my symptoms have disappeared already.   Only time will tell if my body gets back to normal health.  I would strongly advise NOT to go with a Mirena IUD.
It is not worth it.

by Jenidactil, Jul 01, 2007 11:32AM
I had the Mirena put in on 3/2/2007.  The insertion was aweful due to some scar tissue on my cervix.  It took over an hour to get it in.  Dr. said I was an awesome patient to work through it.  I kept telling myself it would be worth it because I was in a new relationship and we were extremely sexually active and not wanting to get pregnant.

So, I bleed for a month and had the worst pinching cramps I have ever had.  Of course we didn't have sex for a month because I was so scared that it would hurt me even more; not to mention all the bleeding.  My partner was super supportive through all of this, Thank Goodness.

My worst fears came true.  I gained weight, my moods have been rollarcoasting, I lost my sex drive and my skin is a mess.  My periods are shorter; but the PMS has been terrible.  I have never had severe cramps and with the IUD I can barely stand up with my PMS cramps.

Of course I stayed in contact with my doctor and he did say that all of most of theses things were normal and would subside.  For me personally, the side effects completely outweigh the benefits.  I talked to my partner and he said that he had noticed all of these things but had hoped that they would subside and hadn't said anything because he didn't want to upset me further.

I am having it taken out this week as soon as they can get me in.  I will be going back to the natural method.  I'm 33 and no hormonal birth control has ever been pleasant for me.  I thought this would be different because of the local release of hormone; but it's been aweful for me.

It's not that I wouldn't recommend the Mirena; because I do know a lot of women that love it.  BUT, if you are someone that has had trouble with many other types hormonal birth control; I would caution you against it.

by justmimi, Jul 02, 2007 04:53AM
I had mine put in 28 days ago.  My hair is cmming out, I have gained weight, had violent mood swings, crazy acne, greesy hair, horrendous headaches with an icky nautious feeling, spotting every day but one.  None of those side effects were there before insertion.

by justmimi, Jul 02, 2007 05:05AM

I must say that you sound like you work for the company.

Also the information given out by the Dr.s and provided by the manufacturer does not list the side effects.

How is a person supposed to make an educated choice if they are not given the information up front?

I am just coming to the end of my 2nd Mirena.  Sadly it's 5 years old and time to be replaced.

Other than the post insertion bleed I have found this particular contraceptive the best I have used.

I have to say, I had the mirena implanted the beginning of this week. Every pamplet I received from my gynecologist listed every side effect that is possible, including minor ones. Side effects listed are not always caused by the product itself. During studies, they have to report all symptoms felt by the people in the study as precaution. I am not saying no one feels these and they are not caused by the product, but that how it is done.

i recently had the mirena IUD put in, well its been about 2 months.  Absolutly no period, no sign at all, I even took a preg test, neg.  I had some pretty bad cramps while the put it in place but after that I was fine.  My only concern is that my left ovary hurts all day every day.  I wonder if this has anything to do w/ the IUD?  I have always had back problems but I get the radiating pain from back to front, more often than once a month and I wonder if its worse because of the IUD.  Anyone have these symptoms.  Thanks for your help!  Olivia

by 4cutekids, Jul 09, 2007 12:53PM
I had the Mirena IUD placed on Friday and was in the ER on Sat night.  Insertion wasn't too bad and I experienced cramping for about two hours.  Then Friday evening I started to ache all over in my joints.  Especially my back, neck and shoulders.  I went back to the information packets and since this wasn't listed as a side effect I figured it was something else.  Then Sat I had chills off and on all day, and finally took my temp that evening  I had a fever, my joint pain also continued to get worse.  ( I was also concerned as I am nursing my 3 month old and have three more children)  I called an RN and they suggested I go to the ER.  The ER doc was great and asked why I thought these symptoms were related to the IUD.  I told him about the numberous posts I had read online about women who had experienced joint pain soon after getting the Mirena.  He did several tests to see if he could find a cause for the fever ( UTI, vaginal infection etc,,,) but they all came back negative.  He said I could have a virus, but there were no other indicators for that such as a cough, chest congestion etc... so after consulting with the oncall ob/gyn he removed the Mirena.  At this point I was sad it didn't work, but in pain so I was glad it was out.

I was frustrated that joint pain wasn't listed as one of the side effects, when a simple search on the internet revealed that numberous women had experienced it.  I probably would have tried it anyway, but now will look into other options.  I appreciate forums like this were you can relate to other women to know you are not alone.

Hey 4cutekids....

Let us know if the symptoms resolved after the Mirena!  I just had mine removed today as we are going to TTC #3.  I really loved it after the first couple of months, but I had similar bad experiences on the Pill, so I know how it goes.  I may get another one someday, or I may get my tubes tied as I'm a c-sect.  I hope you are feeling better and would love to hear if it all subsides and stays gone!  I think I did read about the fever / infection thing in the first days after placement.  Bummer!  Cause when it works right it's gooooood!  Best of luck to you and your little ones!  Glad to know that there's still time for the occasional internet posting when you have 4 kids.  I'm a little nervous about having three, but we're having so much fun with the first 2 we just can't stop yet!

Best of luck to you and your family!

Hi

I have had my mirena for 3 years now. It hurt going in but was great after about 6 months not having periods and just occassional light spotting.  I got a yeast infection about 8 months ago.  It cleared with diflucan.  I got another one in a month.  I thought it was because my boyfriend and I were dating long distance and seeing each other once a month.  After we broke up I still kept getting a yeast infection plus I had starting having a very light period every 3 weeks.  My doctor cultured me twice for yeast because I complained although she couldnt see anything.  They both came back positive for yeast but the lab forgot to culture them both times.  I have another yeast infection for the 8 month in a row and have had to take meds each time only to have it come back.  I am done.  I am calling tomorrow to take it out.  The miren  was great for over 2 yrs but is not working now.

I have great kids and we enjoy being together.  I think the early years are hard, if they are all young together, but so worth it as mine are the best of friends.  A giggle, a hug or a silly comment can totally change your mood for the day.  Children are great!  Good luck with 3!!

For every bad experience someone has with the mirena, there are countless women who love it.  I only had it for about 30 hours and I think that is the great thing, you can have it removed.  The only problem with this is the cost and your providers attitude.  If I was paying out of pocket I would really want to be sure this was right for me.  Second if your doctor will listen to you and remove it if you request them to, then I would go for it.  The key for me was being able to look online and see that the symptoms I had were shared by other women.  So many posts talk about women that were in pain for many months before doing anything about it.  I wonder why someone would let it go on for so long before insisting on removing the IUD.  Trust your instincts and if you think you need it out, insist on getting it out!  Good luck with your decision.

I've had the Mirena for a year and a half now. Before I was on BC for 12 years. I chose the Mirena because I was tired of taking a pill, heavy periods, headaches and moodiness. When I first had the IUD inserted I experienced night sweats and hot flash's for the first month and a half then they subsided I figured this was due to ridding my body of the high dose hormone from the BC. About 6 months into it I started getting those symptoms again I am 42 and to young to start menopause I have not had a period the whole time I have had the IUD. I am now beginning to feel bloated all of the time. I had a friend tell me that Mirena releases's progesterone. I will be looking into that. Anybody else experienced night sweats and hot flash's?

I had my IUD(the one without hormones because I am breastfeeding) put in after my second son was born in Sept of 06. I have not had any problems, except being much more moody than usual and being much more forgetful, with it until recently. I didn't have a period at all until about 3 months ago and then I had another one this past week. The first period was heavy(but I am normally heavy) but this one this past week was horrible!!! I had BAD cramping and EXTREMELY heavy bleeding-for me-, bad mood swings, light headed feeling and the whole works. I don't have any kind of insurance so I couldn't go to the doc and the hospital just refurred me to a OBGYN. I am only 20 years old, very poor and I don't know to do. My husband was going to just bounce a check to take me to the OBGYN, but I said no b/c we REALLY can't afford it(especially with the $40 fees here and there and everywhere!!!). And also since I had it put in, I have been swelling BADLY. To nasty to explain to everyone, but it really worries me. I am really open to any suggestion and would appreciate them very much! Anyone can reach me at king_of_caos)***@****. Thanks, Brittany

I had my Mirena taken out today. It was hell getting in put in and taken out. As several of you, I hated it. I believe my body was trying to reject it completely.  It was put in at the end of April and I bled everyday until June. I personally experienced depression, cramps (constantly), and quite a bit of blackouts.  I too, was told to just give it "one more month." Skin didn't break out too bad, but I did get hot flashes at night also (I'm 27.) As far as hormone related BC, Depo was wonderful other than the weight gain (which is why I got off.) I had high hopes for this, and am really disappointed with the fact that a majority of the time that I had the Mirena in, I was very uncomfortable.  Not to discourage everyone from taking this as I know a few people who love it, just think it over wisely. As much as it hurt to get it taken out, I am already starting to feel better than I have since April.

Well my problem is that my husband will not have sex with me because he says he can feel the sting that it feels like a piece of metal stabing him in his penis. My doctor will not cut the string any shorter becaus my Uterus has dropped and it turns so that would make it to hard to find.My other problem is the othe BC options the ring comes out the patch didnt work and I forget to take the pills. So are there any suggestions??

I went to get the Mirena this morning. It was very painful, although I took a Oxycodone and 800 mg of Ibuprofen.  The actual insertion only sent cramps through out my abdomen and lower back and legs, very similar to labor pains.  I sat for a while and got up to leave the doctor's office. I broke out in a sweat and felt very dizzy. I fainted in the lobby. I was taken to lay down and continued to have extreme cramps radiating down my legs from my abdomen. After 3 hours could finally get up, I slept as the pain would come and go. I was supposed to go get an ultrasound  to check for proper iud placement but felt too sick. I had some soup, laid down at home and felt so much better. I have a headache like the flu, and back cramps. I am on my period but normally don't cramp like this. Has anyone gone thru this ? I have hypothyroidism and just stopped taking the Kariva birthcontrol, since the bc. makes my levoxyl medication ineffective. I gained alot of weight. but now I am afraid with everyone saying they gained. How much weight did one gain. I exercise, eat right and with low metabolism I need all the help I can get, but did I make the wrong decision with the Mirena

I had my IUD put in after the birth of my last child in Sept. 06, and have since had every problem mentioned in this discussion board. However, I am not going to speculate that it is the sole responsibility of the IUD... I am sure it deserves some of the blame. For the time being, I have simply had to "grin and bear it" due to the fact that every time that I have been without birth control for any length of time, I have become pregnant, and once while on the pill. SO, short of having my tubes tied, I am out of options, and my husband and I are considering the possibility of adding one more member to our family. In regards to your post, you should really seek some sort of medical attention for all of your issues, especially the swelling.  Depending on your income, you can check with your local health department to find out who you need to contact about receiving government assistance for your medical care, especially if you were on Medicaid when you had the IUD put in.  If it were me, or a loved one, I would seek the care as soon as possible, and worry about the money later. Medicaid is also retro-active, meaning if you are approved, any medical care related to the problem in which you need coverage for will be covered, even if you went to the doctor now, and werent approved until a month from now. If you are not able to receive assistance, most health care facilities such as hospitals and urgent care centers will bill you later, instead of you fronting the bill before you leave. Take care, and good luck! I hope all goes well.

Hearing all these bad experiences is so disheartening. The fact is, like most methods of hormonal / implant contraception, the frequency of side effects is unknown. We all know that only a minute fraction of users report them. And the long term efects are only just emerging. The first guinea pigs / lab rats - for want of a better term - are only now reaching old age.
Its a lose lose situation. Continued repeated pregnancy or grin and bear it.
No one's good experience can invalidate someone else's genuine bad experience.
We just have to do our research and make the choice that seems appropriate at the time.

I had the IUD put in sometime in Jan 07...in middle of feb hair was falling out in globs, I actually have bald spot!!! I have a 3yr old and 10 month old...I actually yell at them...I have never been like this!!! Absolutly no sex drive...NONE...Havent had an Orgasm since FEB!!! My lower abdomen actually swells when ever i have the spotting. And my retrieval strings slide in and out (get longer and shorter). I still owe $400 on it but am going to get it taken out. My doc says that these things are not related to the Mirena...I say Bullshit...I wll update when it gets taken out.

by paisydmom, Aug 01, 2007 10:06AM
I had the Mirena IUD inserted on 1/18/07. Since then, I have been unable to lose weight...seems like despite diet and exercise, the weight is either staying the same or increasing.  My abdomen is so bloated I look pregnant.  My hair is falling out. Everytime after brushing or combing, there are strands of hair everywhere. I am aware that we all shed hair, but this is not normal shedding.  I experience a pinching sensation on the right side of my uterus that causes me to double over.  I spot for 2 weeks per month and have a period for 1 week and I cramp it seems for the entire month except for 1 week. And I forgot, acne! I have never had an acne problem in my life and now it seems that I am the teenager in my home b/c my teenage daughters have no acne!!! I am treated for b/v every other month.  The symptoms go away, and then they are right back. I know for a fact that I did not have any of these problems prior to 1/18/07. Oh yeah, I have brain fog as well.  This thing is coming out of me!!!!

I have had my IUD now for 7 months. I have noticed that I am way more sexual, I suppose I am reverse to most, My skin looks like a "before" pic on a proactiv commercial, my moodiness is through the roof, and my glands are always swollen. I asked my doctor to remove it back in Fab when they began treating me for a staph infection in my skin (I Was picking oops) and I was told to give it a few months. Well my skin still looks like shiznit, I have bruises all over my legs that are lumps, and I am still beotchy. I know it is not wrong for everyone, but these side effects CAN occur. And I think that maybe the doctors should be more understanding when addressing this instead of just saying "oh it is something else" I have 4 skin prescriptions and still it is horrible. Even if I get a bug bite it simply will NOT heal. Am I the only one??? I also have had no weight gain but have lost 16 pounds. I think I am just a bit off to begin with and the hormones have aggravated my entire system. I don't wish this on anyone!!

i had my merina put in february. i'm also having alot of problems with it. i thought i was the only one having problems. i had it put in because two gynecologist told me it would help with my endometriosis. my menstrual cramps were bad before i had it put in.  i had the worst crampng in  my life when he put it in and the pain lasted off and on for 2 months. i went in and had my doctor check it and told him about all of the horrible crampng and he told me i was fine. i just cant see how i'm fine if i'm having these problems. starting in about june i  started  to get horrible joint pains, acne, bloating, and spotting almost daily. i keep thinking that i'm going to feel better soon and thats why i havnt removed it and also i paid $800 out of my pocket to have it put in. i was thinking i had something more wrong with me then just horrble side effects to the mirena so i'm happy i came across this site.

I have had a Mirena for about 4 years now. Over the four years I developed huge cysts on my ovaries. Both of them. Luckily they were functional and with some birth control went away. Unfortunately the birth control had horrible side effects. I tried three. One made me throw up 4 times, one made me very nervous and than I tried the ring, which gave me bad stomach pains. I have thought about taking my iud out, because of the cysts, but my doctor said the iud has nothing to do with the cysts. I dont know if I believe him. I have some yaz birth sontrol to take but I am pretty nervouse about that. I would like to take my iud out, does anyone have any suggestions for a more natural birth control?

To: CANCER PRODUCER!!!!!
I am a (or was) healthy 35 year old female with no history of any major problems.  I have 2 beautiful litle girs but wasn't sure if third time was going to be the charn. I decided on the Mirena IUD and had it put in.  Within 3 weeks, I went from a regular person to a person who was ready to commit suicide.  I hated myself, my thoughts were very distorted in a harmful way and I was constantly crying and trying to figure out what was wrong with me.  Needless to say, I demanded the IUD to be taken out.
Since then I could never get back to my normal self.  My hormones never seemed to go back to normal, my periods were irregular, my skin broke out all the time, no matter how strict of a diet I was on, the weight kept piling on, night sweats, hot flashes, etc.  I just knew somewhere in my gut, something was not right.  I was even considering flying cross country to a hormone specialist.
I then got the Paraguard IUD (the copper one).  No problems until I had my checkup to make sure it was still in the correct location.  It was but as the NP was finishing up, I casually asked her about some infrequent abdominal pains I was having.  I thought it was constipation or irritable bowel disease.  She ordered an abdominal and pelvic ultrasound just to double check it wasn't ovary related.  From what I was told, the ultrasound tech came out of the room looking a deer caught in headlights and immediately got the NP.  I had a cyst on my right ovary 9X16cm (the size of a mango) and a 4cm one on my left ovary.  Immediately I had blood work done for tumor markers.  My CA125, which determines ovarian cancer, came back 1400!  The normal is under 50.  I had a MRI done and those results showed not 1 but 3 cysts, all larger than my uterus.
I have just had a full hysterorectomy including the removal of my appendice and two 2 lesions on my belly button removed.  I have been diagnosised with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer and start 6 treatment of chemotherapy on Aug. 21st.
Of course with this diagnosis, I've been racking my brain, how could this have been caused?  And then it hit me.  I was fine until I had this truly damned thing put in me. From the time of my question to the NP until now, it has been 7 weeks.  I initially had the Mirena inserted late March and removed beginning of April. Yes, I do know this can cause ovarian cysts, but this is the extreme.  The drug insert and advertisment, make it sound like they are no big deal and they'll go away own their own within 2 to 3 months.  Guess what---withing 2 to 3 months, my cysts have developed into cancer.
To everyone who has had problems, get the CA125 test done now!  I don't want anyone going through this terrible hell.

I also have been having issues with the IUD. It has been in for almost three months and some strange things are happening. I want to say first off that I believe all the women who say it either works for them or it doesn't are accurate. The doctors are incorrect to minimize our gut instincts. This mirena does work for some people. But like all drugs some people don't do well on it. If you are experiencing side effects and your gut says wow what a coincidence all this started after the mirena was put in, have it taken out. This is not normal for you to feel so badly on a birth control method and you shouldn't have to feel bad. So the weird things that are happening are as follows, unexplained rage, head feels weird like almost numb sometimes, feeling dizzy and unbalanced, had an episode where parts of my body went numb for no reason, extreme exhaustion that will not go away after sleep, memory problems(had this prior but seems to have instantly turned much worse), concentration problems, and a general overall feeling of illness. I had twin babies almost 5 months ago so I have tried to chalk some of this up to that but I have two other children and was much worse off after those deliveries and never felt like I do now. My blood counts are normal and I have been seeing a blood specialist from the twins and I have gotten a clear bill of health(ie.no more anemia). I know in my gut that the IUD is contributing. I have previously tried other hormonal forms of birth control and they did horrible things to me and my body. I know my brain says that adding things to your body can mess you up and this seems to be what happens to me.I am going to have it removed since no doctor will convince me that the hormones don't affect some of us adversely. They try to say it is localized to the cervix but how do they really know. My twin son had a reaction recently to a round of shots and for two weeks had neurological problems and muscle control issues and the doc. blew our concerns off from the first round of shots and had our son get this second round of shots. I knew in my gut it was the shots but it was only confirmed for me after the same reaction happened. He seems to be coming out of it praise God but I have read that other children were not so lucky. I will never let another doctor spout some book garbage to me over my instincts. The doctors have their med school training but instincts are never wrong. If your doctor dismisses your instincts, fire them and find someone who will do the follow up and leave the dialogue open even if the doctor doesn't always agree with the reasons.

I want to thank all of you for sharing your experiences. Your stories and accounts are hair-raising. My heart goes out to all of you who suffered because of this birth control device.

I'm 38 and recently had two experiences where I easily could have died. These experiences make me high risk should I be fortunate enough to ever get pregnant and have a child, which I was hoping to be able to do before 40 and since I've finally found my guy! Right now, though, because of my health condition, I am forbidden from both (beoming pregnant and bearing a child).

I went to a specialist today, and he recommended Mirena. My heart sank, because it did not sound like a good option despite the heart-felt "sell" I was given. I'm sure it works for many, many women, but my instinct is saying not to use it. My options are NONE right now. I feel sorry for my boyfriend, but nothing is worth sacrificing your health.

We only have one body for our mind and soul to live. Thank you for helping ot confirm my thoughts on this product. I am going to focus on healing my current health situation and I believe everything else will naturally fall into place. Blessings to you.

Wow!! I can't believe all your side effects. I loved it, I just had it taken out due to I'm now ready for baby number 2. I plan on putting it back in right after birth. Also, since I've had it out I've noticed my acne has worsened, but my libedo has risen higher w/ it out which my husband likes. I guess not all birth control is for everybody but I would recommend Mirena to my friends and family. It's so easy!. To all of you who had problems I hope you can find the right BC for you ! Best of Health to All !

Just wanted to update! I did get the IUD taken out and I will let you all know if I feel better. It has been a couple of hours so far:)My OB tried to tell me to stick with it for another month. My gut said no so I went and got a second opinion from a very awesome doctor who listened to all of my concerns and confirmed that in fact the hormone for some people is not tolerated. She was the first doctor to admit this to me. She did tell me that alot of people do great on it and the number one complaint is the bleeding but there are some that get side effects from the hormone. So I wanted to pass this info on and tell those of you who are doing great on it "great for you and continued success" and those who aren't doing so well "trust your gut and save yourself the suffering and get it removed." Another women posted something awesome she said "when in doubt get it out." Bless you all and happy health:)

I had my Mirena taken out on July 30th after having it put in on May 9th of this year.

I find it amazing that a lot of the doctors claim that Mirena does not have these side effects. Mine did the same thing. Mirena can cause hair loss weight gain and cysts!

Please ladies call the hotline and report ALL your side effects ASAP no matter how trivial. If enough women do it maybe they will launch another study into this IUD.

I have had the Mirena IUD for 2.5 years now and I really haven't had any side effects.  The first year I was nursing my son so I had no period.  After he weaned, I had some pretty heavy periods but they eventually went away.  I do have one day of light AF now and some spotting, but that's about it.  I do notice that under extremely stressful situations, it feels like my uterus hurts/aches.  But it goes away.  My son has had 3 major surgeries since January and I noticed I had very heavy bleeding and tenderness (it felt like my uterus hurt) but again, it went away when the stress level went down.  I do agree that no one BC method works for everyone since everyone's bodies are so different.  But it's been GREAT for me.  When I was on the BCP before our daughter was born, it really affected my moods and my sex drive.  It took me forever to feel ready to have sex.  Since I nursed both children, the pill just wasn't an option for me so I tried the Mirena IUD.  And I'm glad I did.  It didn't affect me at all like the pill did and we could be totally spontaneous.  I don't know about you, but I can't stand the smell of condoms.  I think the IUD has really spoiled us!

I am scheduled to have my IUD removed on Sept. 7th so we can begin ttc for #3, not sure what we'll do for bc after but I would definitely consider an IUD again.  I just wanted to offer my 2 cents as someone who has had luck with the Mirena.  I'm sorry so many people have had such horrible side affects and I hope there's something out there that works better for y'all.

I had just had my Mirena inserted a week ago.  Was the most painfull experience (I have never given childbirth).  I had read all the forms on this and was very hesitent on getting it.  When I got to my appointment I tried talking my doctor into giving me the copper one, she recommended the mirena. So I very painfully had the mirena put in.  I had been on the pill for 20 years and have been struggling with weight gain on and off.  I always suffered with headaches during my monthly cycle. She said the the mirena would help me with my headaches.  I hope that I did not make the wrong decision!!! My sister has had the copper one fore 2.5 years and loves it !! I don't want all them side affects that other women are getting (especially the weight gain and acne).  I hope it works for me or it will come out.

I have had my Mirena for 2.5 years now and have just decided to have it removed.  The main reason being depression.  After reading other peoples comments I think I can also thank it for lack of sex drive, shocking memory, terrible mood swings and tiredness. I am nearly 40 and had the IUD inserted for heavy periods.  My husband had a vesectomy (vasectomy) 8 years ago after the birth of our 2nd child so no need for me to look at anything else.
I am really hoping the removal will help my depression, I would rather give this a go and return to my heavy periods, than go on to anti-depressants.
I haven't experienced any probs with weight gain or acne but have had yeast infections.
Each to their own.  I know 3 other people with Mirena, 1 is on anti-depressants and the other 2 are having no probs (as far as I know - unfortunately, depression can be a taboo subject in some circles).
Thanks gothique for the hotline phone number - I will give them a call.

I too have had the Mirena for 2.5 years.  I had it put in after the birth of my second child & experienced heavy bleeding for about 2 months.  After the bleeding stopped I gained about 30 lbs in 3 months.  Since that time I have had ovarian cyst, thinning hair, loss of sex drive, acne, head aches, painful sex,  breast tenderness and abdominal pain.  Why do I still have it in place?  I did read about it before getting it (the company website, friends who had it  & talked to my Dr who is also a friend)  When the weight gain started I thought it was b/c of my throid, I was also diagnosed as having PCOD.  NOTE that these things did not happen until I had the IUD!  I am now thinking that I do not have PCOD, but that the IUD causes all the symptoms of PCOD.  I kept believing all the symptoms were b/c of age, having had 2 kids & the PCOD.  I am getting removed in 2 weeks.   The only good thing I can say about it is that I have not had a period in 2 + years.  I believe it is a horrible product & the web site is far from truthful.  If it works for you great, but please know that there are many more side effect then what are listed & they do not go away with time.

Hi everyone! I am glad to hear that there are some positive experiences with the Mirena. For those of you who are still suffering or have suffered dearly from this product my heart goes out to you! I am personally glad to be rid of it! I wanted to share that it could take some time for the side effects to go away from the Mirena after it is removed. For some, it will be immediate relief and for others it will take some time. So hang in there and hopefully the hormone will get out sooner as opposed to later. When I first stopped birth control pills it took my body three months to get back to normal. So I guess I will be patient. I am starting to feel better though, there is hope:) I wanted to thank you gothique for the phone number. I am definitely going to call it. It can only help the whole truth get out if we report the side effects. The doctors do seem so unwilling to give the complete picture to patients about this Mirena. Maybe if all the side effects make it onto their little pamphlet they would be a little more eager to share this picture. Here is a website for anyone who is unsure of symptoms. http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100001706.html  Remember if you are in doubt get it out. I wish you all well. Take care!

I had my mirena removed after about 6 months today.  Out of those 6 months I only stopped bleeding for 3 days, I turned into horrible mom to bitchy and fatigued to play with my kids.  NO sex drive, hair loss, EXTREME headaches every day, depression, bloating, weight gain, what else???  I can also add that I was seeking an answer for my symptons before I decided it was my iud I didn't relate all of this to the iud until reading posts like these and seeing that others many others have been feeling the same way and me.  They tried to tell me the symptons are not related but that sometimes it just doesn't work for a few.  Well it seems to be more then a few.  I don't know if this is coincindence or not but the night of removal sex was better then it had been for that 6 months I guess maybee it was making me uncomfortable and a little painful but I just kinda came to think that was how it was supposed to feel but now I don't.  So I will also add that you should really think about using mirena as it seems to have alot of bad side effects that affect your daily living.

wow, i had the mirena inserted aug 8 - not very painful but started bleeding in the ob's office.  haven't stopped yet - just getting heavier.  i have had sex once but had to stop as my husband could "feel something".  i feel like i am having a heavy period, bloated and moody.  i am nursing my 4 month old and have never bled when nursing before (i have 4 children).  i am already considering having the mirena removed before things get worse but i am unsure as maybe things will get better and i need bc.

I had been going through a seperation and had not been sexually active in 3 years, then me and my husband worked things out and he moved back to my home town. Since I had got pregnant on the pill with my now 6 year old daughter(which i might ad peekawho rarely happens) I talked to several people about types of bc. My best friend had a mirena IUD after the birth of her daughter and she was not having any problems (yet) so I decided I would try it. Then I started having an odor which I had never had, and symptoms of a yeast infection. I also know another woman who is having problems including depression so that is 3 out of  3. I went to the gyno with concerns about the odor and he said it was from the IUD but it would go away. Then I started having all of the other symptoms that wisegirl was having. Hair falling out, which I chalked up to stress. Physical pain(pinching and cramping), depression (which I have never had a problem with), moodiness (especially towards my daughter), Severe lower back pain and many other small annoying problems. The only thing I did not suffer from was a lack in my sex drive. During all this time my best friend had started taking depression meds as did I. Mind you she had been through many difficult things in her life and never needed medication, she was one of the strongest people I know. I had know her 5 years and had never seen her this way.I even quit my job due to depression thinking that I just was not happy there anymore after loving it for 5 years. I had my IUD taken out last thursday due to the severe pain it was causing. I have not had ANY of these symptoms since. Luckily my doctor did not dismiss my concerns but he still didn't tell me that these were any side effects of the Mirena. Just wanted wisegirl to know that she is definatley not alone and while some women do not have any problems with the mirena every woman is different and the company should have given warning about these side effects due to the fact that it is apparentley happening to more than a few women.

I am a fan of the Mirena and have had nothing but success. I think your story is yours, but I want to say that you may be putting information into other people's heads that may not be accurate for them. Like I said the Mirena has been great for me. I have had it for 2 years now and will be getting it removed today so that I can begin the process of having another baby. At my 6 week check-up with my doctor I will again have the Mirena inserted. I think if your issues are over then maybe you should back off and put your mind to more positive things in your life. There is no need for you to WIN I'm truly sorry for your experience, but I know others who have had my same positive experience.

Those women that post here do so because they have had "issues." Why is it a bad thing to educate others as to what has happened to some of us. The only reason I found out that it was the Mirena causing my horrible side effects was bacuse of this site and another site. I had to get a second opinion from a doctor because my OBGYN was so convinced it was not the Mirena. The doctor who gave the second opinion said that it was the hormone in the Mirena causing my symptoms. She also told me that the number one complaint is the bleeding. However she said there are most definitely some women who are sensitive to the hormone in Mirena. You are educating others as to your positive experience and that is helpful to those who are doing well on this birth control. There are some with good experiences and some with not so good experiences. I do understand your point and it can be scary to read about what other women have had happen but as with all drugs they affect all of us differently. I am happy to hear positive stories about Mirena and I so wish that would have been me. I would prefer to have been educated initially about all of the what ifs regarding side effects from Mirena. That is the responsibilty of the drug company and it is my opinion that we are being denied the whole truth about this drug. Really my bottom line here is I would rather know up front about risks and have to find out on a website that a drug gave me dangerous side effects. Take care friend:)

I just had my IUD removed last week, after bleeding for a solid 8 months!  Does any know if it is normal to bleed soooo heavy that first period after having it removed?  I am bleeding chunks and I can't even keep a tampon in because the flow is so heavy.  Help

Well the hormone in Mirena can take up to three months to get out completely of the system. I read another post that said it takes around two cycles for the period to get back to normal. Another women said her period went from 4 days to 7 days and the flow was different and heavier. It is always best to go see the OBGYN for follow up to check everything out. I am sorry you are having such awful bleeding. I hope it gets better soon! The doc that took mine out said that initially the bleeding could be extremely heavy. It is possible that you are having removal bleeding too. Just want to pass on that you may want to get checked for anemia since you have been bleeding so much. Your doc may want to get you on some iron if your counts are low. If you google mirena side effects there is a really great site called cure zone that has some women that posted with similar bleeding problems after Mirena removal. Feel better soon! Take care friend!

Happy to hear that some of your symptoms have gone away! Sorry to hear that you are having joint pain. Hopefully it will subside soon. Sometimes symptoms get better over a period of time as the hormone in Mirena can take up to three months to be removed completely from the body. Really hope that you are feeling 100% soon!!!  Take care!:)

I just had my Mirena placed (09/04/07) after 2 1/2 years of post-coital, mid-month, and heavy menstrual bleeding as well as really bad pelvic pain 1 week before and during my period. For treatment I was bounced around a number of different oral contraceptives including Portia, Seasonale, Ortho tricyclen (brand and 2 types of generic) and a few I can't even remember - none of which alleviated my symptoms. Then I went off OCPs for 3 months and while the bleeding improved somewhat, the pain got infinitely worse.

So, at my wit's end, I started looking into other methods of contraception. I hate condoms (so does my partner and we're not at risk for STDs) and diaphragms seemed way too messy and non-spontaneous. OCPs weren't working, and it seemed like a number of the women I'd been seeing in clinic were rejoicing in their use of Depo-Provera. So I started to look into that and other forms of progesterone-only contraception.

Now, I'm only 23 and am nulliparous (no babies or pregnancies) and I'd heard all the stories about the Dakron shield so I never even considered getting an IUD. But then I heard about the Mirena from some of the patients I've been seeing  (I'm a Medical student) and I talked to my mom about back when she had an IUD (mid to late '80s) and she said she loved hers, so I put some more thought into it.

I ended up deciding against implanon and depo-provera for both convenience and for the very same side effects you are all mentioning. Thing is, implanon and depo are the same hormone that you get in the mini-pill and the Mirena (progesterone) which is a naturally-occurring hormone that women release during the 2nd half of their menstrual cycle. When given as contraception, the idea is to atrophy the endometrial lining and permanently keep the woman in the "luteal phase" of her menstrual cycle during which certain changes happen to the cervical mucus, etc to prevent conception (because your body assumes it has already occcurred just after ovulation).

Mini-pill, depo-provera, and implanon therefore can cause all of the same side effects you are describing, which incidentally are a lot similar to the symptoms of PMS or pre-menstrual dysphoric dysorder (PMDD). Makes sense, because it's all caused by progesterone.

Hypothetically, however, delivery of progesterone by Mirena is localized to the uterus and adnexa (fallopian tubes, ovaries, etc) so the side effects SHOULD be less severe or less frequently encountered than with the other progesterone-only methods. However, if you already know that you have bad side effects from implanon, Depo-Provera, or the mini-pill chances are you'll experience the same things with the Mirena.

Interestingly, though, one of the main indications (reasons) for placement of the Mirena is "abnormal uterine bleeding" i.e. menorrhagia or excessively heavy periods. I have personally seen a number of women who have fibroids or endometriosis or endometrial polyps who before their IUD insertion have had massive amounts of bleeding, and within a few months have come back in like they're walking on air because they're in less pain and have less bleeding then they've ever had before.

Of course, there are plenty of testaments to the contrary in this forum.

I'll be interested to see which side of the coin I come out on, but I'm certainly hopeful.

Post-Script:

Oh, as far as insertion: I had a pretty bad vasovagal response (i.e. sweating, nausea, dizziness) from the pain of insertion but that calmed down within about 10 minutes. The pain at insertion was sharp, crampy, and about an 8/10 on the pain scale and is easily the most painful thing I've ever done voluntarily (I'm jealous: Mom said they sedated her when they put hers in!) Vasovagal responses are somewhat common with stimulation of the cervix/uterus though so I was kind of expecting it. I've been cramping a little since then but after taking 800mg Advil (ibuprofen) it's down to about a 2 out of 10 on the pain scale from about a solid 5 after insertion. We're now about 2 hours post insertion.

I'm on my period so I'm spotting and probably won't know if it's due to the period or to the IUD for a few days. . .

I'll keep you updated!

by AndiJ78, Sep 04, 2007 01:41PM
I have heard many women who haven't been pregnant complain of an increase pain reaction as your body has not gone through the growth and dilation that accompanies pregnancy and delivery. Even after having been pregnant 8 times and at the time of my placement having gone through 2 full term vaginal deliveries, I experienced the same pinch and lightheadedness common with insertion. I spotted for a few days, very lightly. I then didn't see a period for over a year, only finally appearing when I weaned my son. And when it did come back it was very mild, literally could get by with panty liners or junior/light tampons.

Given the wide range of s/s and the varied time involving disappearance of said symptoms (some claiming within hours, others weeks, still others months), I am still not convinced that Mirena is the sole cause. There are a multitude of things that could be responsible, including stress, thyroid issues, PP timing, even some forms of psychosomatic disorders.

Do what works for you, if you hate it get it removed. If suddenly your ailments are "cured' good for you. If my husband hadn't gotten a vasectomy, I would have gotten another one placed following the birth of my third child. I had a great experience with it.

The reason that side effects cease differently after removal is because the hormone in Mirena affects our individual bodies differently. It can take three months for the hormone in Mirena (that has distributed itself for X amount of days) to completely be removed out of the body. I had a second opinion doc who confirmed that my side effects were from Mirena and even though it is supposed to be local to the cervix there are some of us that will not be true for. Some of our bodies are sensitive to hormones and that doesn't need to be minimized for those who are suffering. Good for you that you feel great and I hope that continues but you need to respect that some don't. Read the fine script in Mirenas own literature(doctor leaflet) and you will find that those symptoms you say are not from Mirena are listed on their own pamphlet. This is not usually given out to patients which is upsetting. I hope you will understand and give some credibility to personal accounts. Some symptoms will disappear just from removal of the IUD and some will hang around and cease when the hormone is removed completely. Good luck to you and thank you ahead of time for understanding those of us who have suffered dearly because of this Mirena. I will post the site for you to read the Mirena leaflet in my next post:)

hi All,

I have PCOS and 5 weeks ago, ceased my BCPs (Loestrin) after 10 years due to severe migraines that I've suffered since childhood.  3 weeks ago, i had merina inserted

So far I like it - migraines are gone, don't have to think about the pill, cramping was minor.  I have had my period for 2 weeks now, and I'm normally a 2-3 day light flow person.  I realize that this prolonged and regular bleeding, and acne (which I've always had but it's now worse) is normal; however, I have been insufferably irritable and have alot of trouble focusing.  I can't seem confortable in my own skin - very much the same as when I had occasional PMS, but it's been for 2 weeks.  It seems like it's hormone related and I'm going through an adjustment. This started about 2 weeks ago, several weeks after being off the pill.  Anyone out there experience this?  If so, do these mood changes subside after awhile?  I'm willing to stick it out until i adjust, but if it appears that these types of side effects are permanent, I no longer will need Mirena because I'll be all alone!  :)

Thanks!

Hi friend! If you see my previous posts there are two websites for you to go to so you can view side effects of Mirena. I was on Mirena for three months. I have a couple of friends who love it and have never had any issues. This was not the case for me. I experienced dizziness,(Mirena claims this only happens during insertion but mine lasted the whole time it was in), concentration problems, I felt in a fog all the time, memory issues, and had serious rage while on the Mirena.I also experienced numbness in my arms and legs and serious debilitating fatigue. The doctor who removed mine confirmed that my symptoms were hormone related. Most of my symptoms disappeared after removal of the Mirena. I was told on another site that sometimes the hormone in Mirena takes some time to be completely removed from the system. I experienced these side effects the entire time I was on Mirena. The doctors claim that the hormone is local to the cervix but look at all the adverse effects listed on Mirenas own literature and you will see for some that will not be the case. I removed because I couldn't tolerate the symptoms. I wish you well friend with whatever decision you make. Take care:)

Two months postpartum, I had my Mirena in for three months before having it removed. I started a decent list of side effects... depression, mood swings, irritability, complete loss of appetite, insomnia followed by never getting enough sleep, increasingly dying sex drive, nausea, muscle pains, cold sensitivity, cramping followed by the inability to lift anything heavy because of severe pain, and then I decided to get it out. Well it's three weeks later and I've only gotten worse. Every symptom continues, but now I cannot stand the heat any longer (had a bad fit one day when I woke up, I thought I was dying when it wasn't all that warm says my boyfriend). Heat makes me absolutely weak now. I've noticed some hair growth above my lip which absolutely was never there before, along with increased amount and darker color of hair on my legs. Noticing some hair loss now. My period has been acting weird... it started a few days ago but was more than extremely light and has been slowly getting heavier, although still rather light. I have a bit of an increase in bowel movements. All but the cramping being symptoms of thyroid problems (which my OB offered was the cause of all my problems, of course never the IUD!)... and progesterone side effects. Is it progesterone still in my system or my thyroid? Today my voice has gotten coarse, which has me slightly more worried now. A type of thyroidism is much more common 4-12 months postpartum; any of you with similar problems just had a baby? I'm starting to wonder if that actually is some of ours problem. I'm seeing a doctor Tuesday and can report my results back here, because it may actually be something more serious.

Hi friend. I am sorry to hear that you are sufffering so much. I would really recommend you visit a site called curezone. Click on the forum titled Mirena IUD forum and post on there. I feel that some of your issues are due to Mirena. If you read some of the accounts posted on Cure Zone you will see plenty of other women who had symptoms worsen after removal and some who had new symptoms pop up after removal. I know there are some women on that site that said they experienced symptoms after removal that were very similar to pre menopause symptoms. There is also a very intelligent post about how the hormone in Mirena sometimes causes our body to produce more estrogen. I hope all goes well for you at the doctor. Please know he will probably not give any credit to your symptoms coming from Mirena. The doctors will tell you that the hormone is completely out of your system because they believe the hormone only affects the cervix and is never distributed through the blood stream. It would be handy for you to read the info I posted previously regrding some websites to visit. One of these is the prescribing info for physicians that lists some adverse affects that the docs still don't agree happen. I hope you visit curezone and post I know you will get some feedback on that site. Take care friend. Will be looking for your update!:)

That site was actually highly interesting, thank you. In fact, I found a post about how it may actually be doing close to what I was thinking - bothering the thyroid, and that it may be causing iodine deficiency. Some women on there posted how iodine supplementation is greatly helping. I looked up some info on that myself... and it hit me very hard, that has to be what it is! A couple days ago I was thinking that this has to do with something that controls body temperature, I felt that was a pretty core symptom. First thing I find through google, one of iodine's three main functions is maintaining body temperature! I'm going to add that to the list of what I'll have the doctor check on Tuesday. Again thank you for that site! It's horrible that the Mirena can cause so much long term damage. Why haven't I heard anything about anyone trying to sue?

So glad you were able to find some helpful posts on curezone.Looks like you found some posts that are very closely related too!!!  It has helped me so much finding that site! It is so horrible that Mirena has damaged so many. There are some that have talked about suing. Last time I checked they were sending their experiences to the FDA so more research on Mirena and its risks and side effects will be done. There is a post on curezone about that too:) I hope you are able to get all your concerns addressed thoroughly by your doc. I will be thinking of you friend! Hi again! Thanks for the concern, springwater.

I am doing great. After day 1, as posted, I spent 2 days on 400 mg ibuprofen every 6 hours, then went off it completely on day 4 post-insertion. As of now I only have a mild baseline level of cramping (like a 1 out of 10) which is already an improvement on how things were for the past 3 months I was off oral contraceptives. The bleeding has stopped completely, putting my last menstrual period length at 8 days (not awful, relatively speaking). I've been keeping an eye out for any of the symptoms you've described but it's hard to keep track of fatigue when you're on call on the labor & delivery floor, and hard to keep track of temperature regulation when it's 90+ outside and your A/C doesn't work. :) I think both of those things haven't changed since before, although I do seem a little bit crankier than I usually do.

I will say that I'm slightly worried about two things. First, I've got some bloating & constipation going on, but I can't tell if it's related to the IUD or to my awful sporadic med-student diet or dehydration. Secondly, placement - my boyfriend is rather . . . shall we say. . . well endowed, and when we have sex I can feel some pressure way up in my uterus from the IUD. It's not painful, and it's not sharp or anything but I just don't think I'm supposed to *feel* it. Follow-up appointment is on October 9th so if nothing else happens before then I'll address it with my gyno doc then.

So far so good, though.

When it comes to all you ladies that have had bad side effects on the Mirena, I'm wondering if you'd have the same symptoms on a different kind of progesterone-only contraception; i.e. if you've tried going from the Mirena to Depo-Provera and have experienced the same (or different) side effects?

by Tehya95, Sep 10, 2007 08:31PM
I am on the Mirena for the second time. I had gotten it after I had my son back in 2004. I started experiencing hair loss but thought it was due to just having a baby 3 months prior. Well, I have been on the Mirena since May and started experiencing hair loss AGAIN. How do/would I know for sure if the IUD is really causing it?

So glad to see your update friend! You really had a tough time of it with the Mirena being inserted. I am glad your cramping has gotten so much better yeah! It will be best when your cramping pain  is at 0!!!!!:) Your bleeding is completely gone! Yeah! I feel for you in the period dept. mine are 7 days long. That is definitely not fun. It sounds like you have a very demanding job and schedule! I definitely do not know what level of fatigue you experience on a daily basis but it sounds like it would be high in a job with long shifts and demanding work. I guess I thought my extreme fatigue was from having twins prior to getting Mirena but other symptoms were present that helped me know something else was happening to my body. Sorry to hear your AC doesn't work. That is so terrible to be without AC when it is so hot out! Hope it gets fixed soon for you! I had both bloating and constipation while on Mirena. I was never able to know 100% if this was due to Mirena. I never had even one episode of constipation with the pregnancy of my twins and was pretty skinny in a few short weeks after having them so I have always suspected something in Mirena helping the bloating and constipation along. Pure speculation on my part. In your case it may very well be from diet and lack of H20. I would just keep an eye on these concerns. As far as the intimacy goes, your doc may have some insight into why there would be pressure in your uterus. There is a website called curezone and they have a Mirena IUD forum. I think they might have some insight for you! Hope everything continues to go well for you friend! Please keep us posted!:):):)

Hi friend! Here is a website for you to visit.

http://www.contracept.info/iud-mirena.php

If you zoom in on adverse affects at the end there is a 3% occurance of hair loss. This is
Mirena's own literature that is the prescribing insert given to docs. It also says that the docs are supposed to offer the prescribing info insert to the patient.  If you visit the website I mention in previous posts, CureZone, you will also find other experiences of hair loss from Mirena. It is under Mirena IUD forum.  Hope this helps! Take care friend and post back to let us know how you are doing!

So I went to the doctor today and she ignored everything I said (I don't mean the Mirena, I mean she wasn't at all interested in my symptoms or anything), just skipped ahead and did as I asked with a thyroid test, but not as I asked with anything more specific than checking the thyroid. Maybe if she would listen to my symptoms then she may have gotten a better idea of anything. She also wanted a hemoglobin test done for if for some reason that's my problem. Also says I won't get the results for two weeks! That is too long. Her main concern seemed to be that I am due for my yearly pap smear. As for the constant pain I'm feeling, she said just keep taking ibuprofen. What, for the rest of my life? Sadly, I don't have insurance so I'm stuck with this crummy place and can't really see a second doctor. =\

Hello all,
I have read through all of your posts and I was so shocked. I have had so many of the same problems you all are describing: hair loss, unexplained weight gain, concentration issues, rage, general emotional rollercoaster, irregular bleeding, pelvic pain, bloating, swelling, joint pain, numb limbs... all of it. I'm not even on Mirena. I am currently taking tri-sprintec ( a generic of ortho tri-cyclin ), I have been researching IUD's as an option for a 'low' or 'no' hormone contraceptive. I have been on BCPs for 17 years and gotten pregnant on the pill 3 times ( my children are 13, 9, and 4 ). I am 30 now and I don't think I can handle another pregnancy right now so I am looking for a reliable form of BC that might work without so much chemical change to my body. I am also taking meds for bipolar disorder and AF that don't like the BCPs too well ( the Drs have told me that's likely why I've had such problems recently ). After reading your posts I am concerned about making the choice to commit to an IUD, but as so many of you know... when your quality of life is this low you'll try anything!

I am so sorry your doc was so horrible. You are already suffering so much! It is unfair that your doc didn't take the time to discuss all of your concerns with you. Two weeks for the thyroid test? It is usually just a matter of having the bloodwork done. I am unsure why it would take that long? Did the doctor say why? The hemoglobin test is probably to check for anemia. If she had taken the time to ask about your symptoms, and if and I do mean IF she were a competent doctor she would have spent the necessary time addressing each of your symptoms. She also should have ordered tests based on all of your side effects. Sounds like she was more interested in addressing routine things like you said the pap smear and getting you out the door as soon as she could. So sorry friend that you were treated with such indifference. I think since insurance is an issue, you should go to the nearest regional health center(where they have specialists actually in the hospital 24 hours a day)and demand to be seen by one of their OBGYN's. Tell the E.R. doc your symptoms and ask to see whatever other specialists they would recommend you see based on your side effects. Sometimes these regional facilities are so big and have specialists right at their fingertips all the time that you can get some pretty good care. This is just my opinion but its worth a shot.I will be thinking of you friend! Please take care and let me know how you are doing! Hug to you for feeling better soon!:):):)

It's so strange seeing all these posts both here and elsewhere about the bad experiences that people are having with Mirena.  I have had it for about 3-4 years now and tell everyone I talk to that I love it!  I only stumbled across these boards because I'm having it removed on the 25th of this month to ttc#3 and I was looking for information on how quickly fertility returns.
A lot of the information I've read has semi-freaked me out, but some things that have been bothering me are beginning to make sense.  I have been over the past few years having concentration and memory issues and have seen my regular doctor, my gynecologist, a psychologist, and a psychiatrist thinking there was something going on with me that I couldn't understand.  Every said things once I slowed down, it would get better.  My doctor even tried to put me on Prozac (had no effect whatsoever).  I blew it off and said, my children (8 and 6) sucked out all my brain juice when they were born, maybe it was me getting older, I had a lot going on, etc.  It really has been driving me crazy.  I'm missing chunks from the past few years of my life!  I also noticed that my bowels had changed, which again I attributed to age.
I'm not saying that those two issues are caused by the mirena, but it's pretty coincidental.  I would have never even thought the IUD could possibly be the cause.  Let me just say this: I have LOVED Mirena.  I got it on the advice of my mother who swore by iud's.  Nothing to worry about remembering, spotting but no REAL period, not having to purchase feminine products for years....It's been great and I would consider getting it back after this baby, if during the time I'm off of it, I don't see any difference.
Good luck to those who try it - it can be extremely great!  For those who've had bad experiences, I keep you in my prayers.  Hopefully, my issues are not attributed to Mirena.

Hi friend! It is always good to share success stories too! BC always carries some risk of side effects and some are more prone then others. Just wanted to pass on that Mirena states in its literature that 80% of women wishing to get pregnant did so after removal of Mirena within 12 months. This is a website for you to visit. Hi friend! My heart goes out to you! Sorry to hear how you have suffered! I would suggest thoroughly researching the IUD's before making a decision. There are risks and side effects involved and I think it best to make a decision based on having all the information available. Here is the site for Mirena:
http://www.contracept.info/docs/mirena-doctors.pdf   There should also be a site for the Paragard IUD(the non hormonal one) just replace Mirena with Paragard in the site address. I have heard the paragard is not recommended for anyone with heavy periods or bleeding issues. I would also urge you to discuss with your doc any possible interactions with your meds. The Mirena BC is very new and the effects are still being learned.  Hope this info helps and good luck to you friend. Please post back and let us all know how you are doing!:)

Hi Everyone... I have had my Mirena for 4.5 yrs now.  For the first 4 months or so, it was miserable.  Constant bleeding and spotting, bloating, cramping... awful.  But I stuck it out and it got much better... the bleeding and cramping stopped, and I haven't had a period now in 4 yrs... also, unlike others, it didn't effect my sex drive nor did I experience hair loss... .  I told everyone I knew that they should get the Mirena and how much I loved it.  BUT - for about two years now I have been having sharp pains in my lower right side (found out later was a cyst), and I started constantly getting yeast and bacterial infections... this is when I started wondering if it was the Mirena.  Also, as a side note, in the past 4 yrs I have had acne, frequent headaches, bloating, back pain, increased vaginal discharge, I have had bouts of dizziness where I've had to sit down in the middle of a dept store so I wouldn't pass out, I've had trouble concentrating, I've been mildly depressed, I've gained 15 lbs that will not come off no matter what I do... I NEVER attributed any of this to the Mirena until I started reading the posts on this site and others.  I, instead, went to an eye dr for my headaches and a dermatologist for my skin, and just kept using OTC and prescriptions for the bacterial and yeast infections... btw I have 2 kids, I am 32 yrs old, I'm 5'7" and weighed 135 when I got the Mirena (now 150)... I watch what I eat, never been depressed or had any of these symptoms before.. I exercise 5x per week and I just kept gaining weight... I figured it must be age or stress causing my weight gain and most of my other problems - but now I believe it is possibly the Mirena.  I have an appt to have it removed next week.  I suppose it will take time to know if it was really the Mirena, but my gut instinct tells me that it is.  I'll post back after I've had it removed and let you know what I think then....

Hi friend! I would like you to visit the following site to see the side effects listed in Mirena's own prescribing insert.

http://www.contracept.info/iud-mirena.php

You will see that weight gain, headaches, acne, dizziness, and depression are all listed. You may want to print it out and bring it with you to the doctors visit. They like to deny that these side effects occur in some of the patients who use Mirena and will sometimes try to talk you out of removal. The prescribing info even tells the doctors to offer the Mirena insert to their patients but rarely does this happen.

Here is another great site to visit. It has a list of side effects from Mirena also.

http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100001706.html

I have read posts from other women who did not get any major side effects until years into Mirena use. This is not uncommon.
Mirena is a progesterone type BC. Another BC that has the same type of hormone found in Mirena is the Depo shot. This shot is known for some pretty severe side effects in some users. Most of your symptoms should go away after removal of Mirena. After removal it could take your body up to six months to recover from having it in circulation. This info came from my OBGYN who is fantastic. I fired the last one after he tried to convince me to keep Mirena in after I had rages and other debilitating side effects while using it for three months. It could also take some time to get your period back but the sooner you get it removed the sooner your body can recover. When you experience side effects from Mirena it is because the hormone has distributed itself beyond your cervix. So sorry friend that you have suffered so much! Its time for you to feel better! I will be thinking of you! Hope all goes well with removal and please post back to let us all know how it goes for you! Take care!:):):)

WOW... thank you so much for the link to that web site.  That describes me.. everything I have felt is listed there.  I am really speechless.  My doctor raved about this and never mentioned anything about these side effects...other than irregular bleeding and cramping for the first few months.  WOW.  Thank you again.

by denagirl24, Sep 16, 2007 01:11AM
I'm not sure were to begin... I got my IUD 6 weeks after baby #2( Feb. 2, 2007) due to the fact that I'm not good with pills. Insertion was painless, but since then I have had mild spotting for months stright, which later deminished in June of this year to spotting only the week of my period.  I have had acne as bad as it was in Junior Highschool (10 years ago), which only starting getting better when the spotting started to deminish.  What I have noticed with my experience on mirena is as one symptom starts to bet better another symptom starts.  Now that the acne and spotting are getting better I thought everything was starting to look like the doctors talk about on Mirena, but now I have a BAD yeast infection, which I am treating with OTC.  I only fell onto this website in question whether the OTC would have any adverse side affect to the Mirena, only to find that the yeast infection could be another side affect!  AHHH!... After reading through the site with my Husband he stands behind my choise to remove it if I the yeast infections don't stay at bay, or get better.  I never had any problem with Ortho Evera Patch, so I may opt for removal and choose to go back on the patch.  I know that the patch just like all drugs has its bads...(blood clots- but my blood is so thin - that my doctor has questioned whether i was on blood thinners so I doubt taht is a risk...), but I think that some people have better experiences on some drugs than others.
Other than the acne, bleeding, and now the yeast infection, all other problems I am not yet relating to Mirena, but I'm not forgetting that as an option.  The joint pain, and the cold chills ( and constantly being cold)may be Mirena or it could just be related to something else.  Only time will tell.  I am going to consult with my OB and get her opinion, but take anything said with a grain of salt.  Only time will tell if more "symptoms" appear after the yeast infections but if they do, then doubt is reinforced with education and the IUD will come out.
My only regret is that the literature I was given upon getting the IUD is that these symptoms usually disappear after 3 months.... ahhh its been more than three months, and I think forums like this go against there statistics.

Hi friend! Thank you for posting! It sounds like you have definitely done your research and are able to make very informed decisions regarding your BC! I was not able to live with the side effects Mirena gave me but this is not always the case. There is another great website called CureZone and they have a Mirena IUD forum. If you have any ?s that is definitely another good place to post at! Please post back and let us know how everything goes for you!!!!! Take care friend!:)

I called my Ob today and talked to one of the nurses, she said continue witht he OTC for my infection and if it continuous or doesn not improve to come in to have the IUD checked and discuss the problem.  So hopefully my docto rwill stand behind my decision like my husband does.  Updates later...

I had Mirena inserted March 9, 2007. I had my 2nd son 5/18/06 and had went right back on the depo shot. I decided that the IUD would be alot less of a hassle.  It didn't hurt to bad while being inserted but a few minutes after I had cramps from heck.  They were horrible and lasted all night and all the next day.  I called my best friend who also has the IUD and she said that was pretty normal. So I sucked it up.  I don't really have too many complaints about it. I've had some spotting here and there but nothing major, that might have to do with me going straight from the shot to the IUD. I have cramps once in awhile sometimes severe on my left side which kind of worries me because I have a hx of ovarian cysts.  My biggest complaint to date is my skin. I wasn't sure what it was from but reading these messages boards I see where to put the blame.  I have acne worse than I ever did when I was in high school.  I also have red blotchy spots that go down my neck and chest.  I can't stand it.  I asked my family Dr. about it and he gave me some steroid cream and said that day that it kind of looked like eczema.  But the acne is horrible.  I know I could have much worse side effects than this but I don't know if I can handle this skin thing for the next 4 1/2 yrs.  Does anyone who likes their IUD and has skin problems because of it have any suggestions on what to do? I think I'm going to call my GYN tomorow and ask him if he has any suggestions on the skin issue.  I really feel like I'm going through puberty all over again but WORSE. Good Luck Everyone

Just a quick update: cramps down to 0, baseline pain level at 1/10 due to the endometriosis we think that I have (diagnostic laparoscopy in the works), no adverse side effects, and no more "feeling" it during intercourse. 1-2 days of really really light spotting last week; not due for a period for another week or so.

So far so good.

Whoopee!

I had my IUD put in last year at about this time. Everything went well for the first few months, but then in about February I started having these awful pains on both sides of my lower belly. I finally got tired of it and had it removed in July. After having it removed I had a really reallly heavy period for about 2 weeks. That was miserable. But since then I have not had a period since! I know that its very easy to get pregnant after having an iud removed, but I have taken 2 pregnancy tests and both have been negative. And the weirdest part is that I still have those little sharp pains in my belly even though its gone. Basically I am trying to figure out where to go next. Has anyone had any problems like me??  :)

Hi friend! So sorry to hear that you are still experiencing pain. My doctor told me it could take up to six months for the body to recover post Mirena. When I visited my doctor last I had not gotten a period for over three months. After having Mirena removed it took four weeks for me to get a period. The doctor warned me that it could take many months for my period to come back and also said it takes awhile for the period to get back to its normal pattern. I think it is a good idea for you to get checked out by your OB since you are still experiencing abdominal pains. My guess is your body is still trying to recover from Mirena but its always best to have it checked out to rule out any other complications! Hope you feel better very soon! Take care friend and post back when you get the chance to let us know how you are doing!:):):)

Hi friend! It usually takes some time for periods to get back to normal after removal. I got mine back within 4 weeks. My doc says it can take six months for things to return back to normal but each of our bodies is different and some may get back to normal quicker. Mirena states that 80% of women wanting to get pregnant after removal do so within 12 months. Though, it is certainly possible to get pregnant sooner. Hope this helps. Here is a website you can visit to learn more about Mirena facts.

Well, I just got Mirena put in yesterday.
And now I'm kinda scared reading all this!
I'm just going to hope for the best though I guess.
I did experience the cramping. I layed around all day yesterday.
I feel a little this morning.
I was thinking about calling the doctor because you know they say to check the strings, well, I can feel them like right away, I thought they'd be a little farther up.
Is this right?
Because now I'm thinking well okay how am I suppose to have sex? The strings will be poking him! Ya know?
Help if you can!

I'm all about Mirena, I even had my sister just get one!!

Hi Ladies,

Just wanted to give an update.  Yesterday I had my mirena removed and am anxiously waiting to see how things go.  The removal was simple and painless, although he was unable to see the strings.  Once he inserted some long tweezer like thing (that's my medical term for it) he was immediately able to grab it.

I will let you know how things go!

Hi there,
I have had Mirena in place since August 15, yes it was painful. Have had spotting ever since except for maybe 1 week. Within the first month I started having the acne, like I was a teenager again, I also experienced a sensation in my breasts like milk was coming in, it reminded me of when I nursed my son 4 years ago. I did mention these issues at the 1m string check, my gyn gave me an rx for the acne (which is slowly helping) and she hadn't heard of the symptom with my breast before. She just told me to hang on till December, I agreed to do so.  I have also been feeling pretty lousy, just tired and I have been having a constant daily headache for several weeks now. I work for my PCP doc and I informed him of how I was feeling, so we did lab work and a sinus xray, which were both normal, but it just occured to me that maybe all of this was coming from the hormone in the IUD. The headaches are the main issue, and I'm not one to have them this often, yes I get occasional sinus or tension headache but nothing to last for more than a day. With this being said I did my own research, googled mirena side effects and of course read a ton of similiar and more symptoms from different women, all complaining of the same things. I just don't know of any other reason to be causing this fatigue and daily headache, so I finally contacted my GYN and she said that since it is peak allergy season she wants me to take some allergy meds and a nose spray and see if it helps my headaches. I am willing to try this but It makes me skeptical. I don't want to have the IUD removed if its not the cause but if these symptoms continue for another couple weeks with no relief from the meds my gyn wants me to do then we are going to have to talk. I tend to believe that maybe my body just isn't liking the hormone. Who knows????

I do have 3 other women in my work place who all have the Mirena and have had no complaints, so its weird to be the only one.

Hi friend! Thanks for your update! Hope you start to feel better ASAP! It will take a little time for your body to recover post Mirena but most women that have experienced side effects feel much better after removal. Make sure you drink lots of water to help cleanse the hormone out and take it easy for the first few days if you can!!! Please post back with any concerns and also to let us all know how things go! Hi friend! I really want you to visit the following site and share it with your doc.

http://www.contracept.info/iud-mirena.php

Your doctor had this available to her when she put your Mirena in. The literature says the docs are supposed to offer the Mirena doc's prescribing info to their patient but I have yet to hear that being done. Your headaches and acne are both listed in Mirena's own info as adverse affects. Here is another site for you to visit that will list other side effects from Mirena:

http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100001706.html

Because the medical community does not share up front ALL of the possible side effects from Mirena, it may very well be that your co workers may have side effects and ignore them since their docs did not inform them adequately. There also is the possibilty that your body is sensitive to the hormone in Mirena. I hope the previous sites are helpful and please post back with any questions or concerns! Thinking of you friend, please take care! Hug to you!!!!:):):)

I just wanted to say that I have had the Mirena for 3 1/2 years and I have had some of the side effects from this but, I think if you are thinking about having one put in you should the worst thing that could happen is you would have it taken out or you could love it. I have 3 kids and the mild acne and alittle more moody is worth it to me to not have any more kids right now. I think I would love to have one more and I do not want to get fixed. This has been a good thing for me and 3-4 other people I know who got it the same time as me. I think this is good to know what others are going through, so if your story is good or bad I would say keep sharing for people to see both sides so they can make the right decision for themselves.

Hi friend! Thanks for your post! Unfortunately, it can take quite a long time for the body to get back to normal for those of us who have negative reactions to Mirena. Yes you can get it removed if you get side effects but that does not guarantee you will have those side effects go away immediately. The reason some of the side effects can get so bad is the hormone in Mirena cirulates in the bloodstream in higher % for some then for others. Mirena's own literature states a small % is released into the bloodstream. The docs say it will only be local to the cervix but for some of us we find out too late this is not always true. My doc has warned me because of the horrible reaction I had it will take up to six months for my body to recover. I appreciate you sharing your positive feedback. I know this will be validating to those who are having a positive experience with Mirena. This Mirena has and does work for some but I think it is important to make sure you are aware of what can happen. It is unfair that the risks seem to be minimized by the docs and all too often women are walking around with debilitating side effects not knowing it is from Mirena! I hope this site helps women be able to make an informed choice about Mirena whether they decide to get it or not! I thank you again for your post and please post back and keep in touch! Take care friend!:):):)

I have been on Depo for about 4 years and now have Osteopenia and Osteoporosis in my hips as a result. I've also gained almost 40 lbs in that time. My dr told me that I cannot continue taking Depo because of the bone loss. Because I smoke, she told me that my only choice for bc now is Mirena. After reading all of your posts, I'm really afraid to try it! The Mirena phamplet made it sound great! I really need to lose weight, not gain more. I also don't want all the other problems that go along with it. Any ideas on what other options I have now for bc?

Hi friend,
I am surprised your doc would recommend Mirena after the side effects the depo shot gave you. Mirena is a progesterone BC. Depo is also another progesterone BC. If you are sensitive to the hormone in Depo there is a very good chance the same could be true on Mirena.  I am going to post the docs prescribing info for Mirena so you can check out the adverse affects listed by Mirena's own literature. Please know it is your choice if you use Mirena or not. I only wish to pass along the info the docs should be passing along. Hopefully this will help you make an informed decision about Mirena. If you have any other questions or concerns please let us know! Also post back friend and let us know how everything goes for you!!!!! Hug to you!

I had Mirena inserted a week ago and it was very painful and I had bleeding only when they inserted it that day and the bleeding stopped. But when I left the Dr office I all the sudden felt light headed like I was going to pass out and then it eased up, but still felt light headed that first day and started cramping sharp pains that traveled down my legs but would ease pretty quick: Over the next couple of days I would get this cramping and really bad pain on and off mostly in the afternoon which is weird. I then had one day of no pain and the next day the pain was so bad and just was lasting longer and longer to the point that I ended up in the er of which the doctor who inserted it told me to go so they could do an ultra sound. The test showed that it was in the right place and I had to be given two percocet before the pain would ease. I went in the next day and had it removed. I also never had problems with acne and just with in that one week have pretty large acne on my head, under my eye and on the side of my nose it is under the skin. It didnt hurt having it removed just alittle discomfort, but having it removed yesteday and didnt sleep last night too good having back pain and restless and woke up feeling very weak, depressed and am like in a fog (light headed). I actually am due to get my period again a week from today and really dont know what will happen I just turned 40 and decided on getting the Mirena due to heavy periods and hearing how good it was. I am glad I found this Forum it makes me feel so much better to know others have gone through similiar effects from it.

by Mishkenzie, Oct 04, 2007 09:24PM
I also wanted to add that I have also gained 10 pounds just in the last week and have not lost or gained any weight in over 20 except for 1or 2 pound difference and I also have had feelings of hot flashes like some of the others and slight headaches. I am just hoping when I do start my period it is not too bad, because they were pretty bad prior to having Mirena.

Thank you so much for your post friend!!!!:) I think you made an excellent decision to have Mirena removed after you started experiencing such awful side effects! I also had the light headed foggy feeling and I stayed on Mirena because my doc kept insisting Mirena wasn't to blame. This feeling only got worse for me and I had many other side effects that eventually after three months I demanded it be removed. Mirena's own literature (I have the website in my previous post) states that acne, weight gain, and depression(so many others too) are all adverse affects of the Mirena. My first period following Mirena lasted three days(it is normally 7) but I took something called red raspberry leaf tea and it helped with the bleeding. I read about this from another Mirena side effects site on CureZone. This is another good site for you to visit!!!!!This tea is a natural uterus helper. It is also recommended to women before birth. I think it could be helpful for you to use this prior to your period and anytime you may have bleeding. It does take some time for periods to get back to "normal" after Mirena but hopefully this info helps you out! I do hope all your side effects go away ASAP! Take care friend! Hug to you!!!!:):):)

i have just my mirena inserted ..like 5 days ago, i have never had pregnancies before, but BCP i took before did too much of damage to me, so my doctor recommended mirena, but i have read about all the side effects here and i'm  horrified. I have experienced only some of them so far: fainting at the doctor's office, abnormal cramps and pain so i had to show up at the doctor's office the second day as they were thinking i had my IUD expelled  because usually u shouldn't have non stop pain for 2 days straight! But the IUD was in place and remembering how painful it was to insert it  i simply asked the doctor (who has mirena herself and no kids) to prescribe me strong painkillers because motrin wasn't working AT ALL! So i'm a 5 day or better say - night on vicodine BUT i'm absolutely fine during the day, no pain,no cramps, but as i go to sleep - here the fun part begins, i have to take 2 pills of vicodine every 2 hours to be able to at least TRY to fall asleep with those cramps. I just don't understand why exactly at night... i don't want to be on drugs like vicodine i have a job that requires serious mental and logical functioning all day long...and with vicodine u know... i guess i'll end up in the doctor's office again...

Hi!  Love this site!  I have Mirena over a year now.  I could not take birth control pills with estrogen because I am 38.  My doctor was a bit nervous about suggesting the IUD because I never gabe birth.

Anyways, for dysmenorrhea, it is amazing.  My periods are so much lighter and I almost have zero cramps.  I do not need painkillers anymore.

However, I still get spotting almost everyday.  Anyone else experienced this?

P.S. My sex drive has been through the roof since my IUD!

I just had a Mirena put in last Wednesday, and I have not been myself ever since. I'm extremely depressed and irritable. My mom was in town for a few days (the IUD was implanted during a surgery to remove uterine polyps), and I can't believe how MEAN I was to her. The whole point of the Mirena was to get off estrogen-based birth control pills, which I have been taking for years to regulate abnormal bleeding. I have migraines, which seem to cluster around my cycle, and the neurologist wanted me off the estrogen. A previous attempt to switch to progesterone-only pills was a disaster--I had to call my gyn from the bathroom and ask when I could go back on the Ovcon.

I have a good relationship with my gyn, but I feel like she didn't give me the full story about the Mirena. I trust her, so I didn't think to go to the web and search out "unscientific" side effect reports. But she stressed that weight gain was NOT a possible side effect. I have been rigorously losing weight--42 lbs in the past year; 68 overall--not taking a single holiday from my eating plan. Why did I feel compelled to deviate and binge for the first time in 56 weeks this weekend? The reports of weight gain and acne alarm me greatly. I have overcome tremendous health obstacles to lose weight, and still have at least 20 lbs more to go. I have no tolerance for backsliding. If the Mirena has affected my mood so severely, can the  other effects be far behind?

I'm going to see my gyn tomorrow, and have a call into my primary care doc for some advice. What does it say that I can't get through a single conversation without sliding into tears right now? I have a constant headache, unresponsive to any meds, and I'm exhausted. The nurse at the gyn seemed to want to encourage me to "stick it out" for awhile, but I have to be back in the saddle at work on Wednesday. I'm a professional writer, so there is no room for an off day, or calling in sick. I don't show, and there's a big old blank space in the newspaper. And a fired writer.

I'm thinking I just have to get the damn thing taken out and go back on my old friend, Ovcon. Thoughts?

Hi friend! Thank you for your post! I have to say that I am surprised your OBGYN would recommend Mirena when progesterone only pills affected you adversely. Mirena is a progesterone only BC also and does carry similar side effects to other progesterone BC. It angers me that your doctor did not share the prescribing info from Mirena with you. She had this available to her when she prescribed Mirena and weight gain, acne, depression, and headaches are all listed as adverse affects. Here is the website for you to browse: I think you should print out the section that lists adverse affects and bring it with you to the doctor's office. This is literature from the official Mirena site and your Dr. should be disclosing it to you. The Mirena info tells the prescribing Doctor to offer the info to their patient.

http://www.contracept.info/iud-mirena.php

Here is another site to visit that has many other side effects.

http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100001706.html

It is ultimately your decision to use Mirena or get it removed. I personally feel that once side effects start they usually get worse over time. The one side effect that does seem to get better with time is the bleeding. The nurse telling you to stick it out is speaking in ignorance. They like to tell us that the hormone is local to the cervix but if that were true for all of us then there would not be so many of us on these sites with side effects from Mirena. Mirena cannot 100% account for how much of the progesterone is actually released into our bloodstreams. I believe that in some of us experiencing side effects it is because this hormone is flowing in our bloodstream in higher amounts then women who are not experiencing side effects on Mirena. One of my worst side effects was rage and mood swings. This came on pretty soon after having Mirena inserted and left pretty quickly after I had it removed.
Your Doctor may continue to minimize your side effects but remember that you are in charge of your body and you have to live in it and with it! Listen to your gut it will not let you down. I hope the previous info helps you make an informed decision about Mirena. If you have any other concerns or questions please us know! Take care friend! Hope you are feeling better very soon! Hug to you!!!!!:):):)

I am probably the only guy on this topic. I am from Slovenia, Europe so please dont be focus on my English. Here is my story. Bellow you will find the to messages that I send to another forum about Mirena’s side effect. Just for basic information: My wife and I have never read anything about Mirena side effects so we have not been worried about and she was not just imagine these side effects.
1st message Thursday October 12
My wife (35 years old) put in Mirena at the end of August. Few days after insertion he felt very bad so we thought that she had some hearth problems. But this problems lasted only one day. After aprox. 4. weeks after the insertion of Mirena the real scary things began to happen. First she felt numbness in lips (for aprox one hour). After one week she felt numbness and pain in left arm. And from this day the things got only worst and worst. She has problem with breathing and with swallowing (she felt like someone choking her). The numbness in arms came and went away few times per day. She has very strange feelings (mental and psyhical), sometimes she felt dizzy. She can't drive car anymore. And of course she is exhausted all the day so she must relaxing. The things are a little better at the evening. When this problems began I didn't know anything about side effects but I realized that something might be related to Mirena. After that I found a lot of pages with description of similar problems. Yesterday my wife removed the Mirena, but one day after she is still very bad so we dont know if the Mirena is real couse of problems. But I still hope that problems will gone. Does anyone know how long it takes to get rid off Mirena's side effect?
Doctor she visited prescriped her almost all medicine investigation. She started with hearth examination (fine results), simple blood test (fine result), ear&nose and throat exam (fine results). On monday she will have nevrological exam, lunge exam etc.

2nd message, Monday October 11

Questions from Slovenia, Europe:
I read a lot of woman’s experience of Mirena side effects. My wife is unfortunately also one of those women ( I wrote about that in my earlier post Mirena terrible side effects). She removed Mirena on Thursday. On Friday she went to neurologist (because she was feeling very bad with all symptoms - numbness, fatigue, dizziness, breathing problems, unawareness of own body etc). Doctor performed lumbar puncture to eliminate suspicion of encephalitis. Results of puncture and blood test were OK. Today forth day after removal she is feeling better first time after 10 days and today is the first time that she didn’t feel any previous side effects (so far). I hope that this is not only a coincidence. When we mentioned to doctors that she had Mirena inside and asked them if this could cause these symptoms they all denied that. So my questions are: 1 Why docs don’t even take into consideration Mirenas side effects?. 2 Is there any medical proof of Mirenas side effects? 3 What medical examinations can proof that?

Well it's been almost 2 weeks since i have  Mirena inserted. Cramps and pain had gone in a week. I was already thinking of going back to the doctor's office to take it out, but here we go no pain. The only thing that annoys me terribly is non stop spotting and lack of attention to anything...this is really weird as if i have ADD, can't concentrate on anything for more than 5 min..., but what also worries me is that it is written that a woman should check Mirena after every period, u basically feel the threads of mirena, but i just don't feel them... i'm concerned whether it's my doctor who cut them very short, or i have to go to the doctor to check it up again...

Thank you for your supportive message and feedback, springwater. Last night was definitely an "hour of need" for me, and I greatly appreciate a sympathetic and knowledgable stranger reaching out to me.

I had the Mirena removed about 3 hours ago. I know this REALLY sounds crazy, but I started to feel like myself again IMMEDIATELY, by the time I sat up on the exam table. (By the way, it took my doctor just a few seconds to take it out, and the process was less painful than tweezing an eyebrow hair.)

Discussions with my primary care doc and my family, after I posted yesterday, made me realize removal was absolutely necessary. I was clearly NOT myself. In just six days, I had developed severe depression, insomnia, irritability and a relentless headache. I was starting to feel achy all over. I was so fatigued and listless I could not function. I was barely able to make the half hour drive into town today for the doctor's appt.

I should clear up that my gyn DID give me the full Mirena brochure, have me read it, and discuss all my questions on a subsequent appointment. The problem is that the drug company's info minimizes the side effects, and clearly does not list those that many of you on this message board and others are reporting. I would NEVER have considered anything with even a slight risk of weight gain, after all the hard work I have done to lose weight. Hair loss and cystic acne are two other SE's that would have made me shy away.

Interestingly, my primary noted that she has had several patients who needed to have the Mirena removed almost immediately after having it put in because they could not tolerate the side effects. Unfortunately, the decision to go for the Mirena was one of the few ones I hadn't discussed with her as well, or she might have headed me off at the pass.

I will be making adverse reaction reports to both the drug company and the FDA.

For now, I'm feeling better by the hour. My thinking is clearing and my mood has improved by 100%. I picked up some raspberry leaf tea (I have read many Mirena boards in the past day, and several people recommended it for bringing things back into balance), and will drink that as well as copious amounts of water to clear my system. Thank you to all who have shared their stories. I'm feeling optimistic that I will actually be able to go to work tomorrow (although I may try to halve this week's story schedule to lighten my work load--hope a fellow writer is ready for an extra bit of work while I ease my way back into reality!).

I'm so glad I listened to my body--and my family--and got rid of this. While the Mirena may work for some women, it was poisoning me. I know one of the dangers of web chat rooms and message boards is that people with an agenda post fake stories. But this absolutely happened to me. I still can't quite believe it myself. I hope I don't suffer any lasting consequences to my health, and am saying a prayer for all of you who have.

Well here's the thing I've noticed.  When something goes bad you are going to complain about it and when others hear that, they will jump on the wagon and voice their opinions too!  With EVERY drug there is the potential for side effects.  I myself am only 28, no kids nothing, but I have been diagnosed with PCOS (though sometimes I have to wonder) and the pill messed up my system horribly.  I needed something that was local and not systematic.  I have had some acne since I got my Mirena in.  And frankly I have cysts, I've always had them.  A month before I got this in I was having severe pain on my right side, went in and they found a 3 cm cyst on my ovary.  So, for me that's nothing new.

I think it's good so far.  I have the acne and the spotting, but that really isn't that bad when I think about the fact that I don't have to worry about taking a pill everyday and me and my bf don't have to worry about protection if it's 3AM.

Yes everyone should know the side effects that are possible, but like someone mentioned, you can have adverse side effects even from aspirin!  Everyone is different, your DNA makes you unique and how you process and deal with "intrusions".  So instead of saying it's the worst thing ever no one should get it (which is sitting on a soap box) say, this was horrible for me, this is what happened, so anyone thinking of getting it, get all your facts straight BEFORE you even talk to your Dr about it.

I researched BC methods for a month and then researched the Mirena for about a month before even going to my Dr with it.  I'm still scared that somethings going to go wrong, BUT my body will let me know if it's not going to work out.

Good luck to everyone out there, hopefully you'll decide for yourself.

I am sorry some of you have had problems but I want to let people know that I am one of the many who have NO ISSUES with the device.

I have had my Mirena since 1/05 and I love it.  I have had no problems at all.  I have had no spotting or bleeding with the device (I did not have a period prior to having the device inserted due to use of Depo Provera) and have only gained about 10 lbs over the years.  This though is more likely due to my horrible diet as I run my son all over the place for cub scouts and baseball than is from the device.

I do love not having to worry about going to the doc for shots every three months for Depo or running to the pharmacy and having to remember to take pills or change the patch.

I hope all of you who had problems feel better soon but I just want everyone to know...It does work for some people and these people LOVE IT.

Hi friend! Thanks for sharing your positive experience! There are definitely some women who do well with Mirena and I am glad to see this is the case for you!:) This product works in each of our bodies differently. As with any drug some will tolerate it and some will not. Take care friend and please post back and keep us updated on your experience! :):):)

Thanks for posting back! I am so glad you were able to get it removed! I also felt better immediately after it was removed. How are you feeling now? It can take quite some time to recover after you experience the side effects on Mirena. I do hope you have noticed that your side effects are getting better! I am also so glad to see you have picked up some of the red raspberry leaf tea. I can tell you from my personal experience that this is a miracle tea. I took this tea for my last two periods(post Mirena  periods) and my 7 day periods became 2-3 days in length. The tea is a natural uterus helper so even if it doesn't always have this affect on everyone it is great to help tone the uterus. Hopefully it will help you too!! I don't know if you are looking for any other "natural" help but CureZone is a great site to visit. They have a Mirena IUD forum that really helped me out a lot when I was in search of answers. (they are legitimate experiences and some very awesome women are on this forum:))

Just an aside: I had the misfortune of a doctor who tried to tell me "not to listen to all the stuff on the internet." Well the women on these sites come here because they are desperate for help. Their lives are falling apart and don't know why and they have some quack of a doctor minimizing their concerns and making them question their own gut instincts. The majority of women who share are searching and sharing in an attempt to get validation for their suffering and the source of that suffering. I am so glad that there are sites like this that help women like you and myself find that hope!

I am so so glad that you are doing better and I am glad to see that you will be taking it easy for awhile! If you should have any concerns what so ever please do not hesitate to post back. I will be thinking of you friend and sending you some healing energy!!!! Big Hug to you!!!!!!!!!!!:):):)

Hi avrora,

I am sorry I did not post sooner in reply. It is important that you get in to see the doctor ASAP. If you cannot feel the threads it is possible for the IUD to become imbedded so it needs to get checked by your OB. I want to note that this is very rare but it is always best to be cautious. It may be that the doc did cut the strings too short, but do try to get it checked out soon. I would also keep an eye on the lack of attention you are experiencing. I had quite a bit of concentration issues while on Mirena and had a very "fuzzy" head the entire time it was in. I can say with 100% certainty that Mirena caused this since it only happened after it was put in and left after being taken out. This side effect only got worse for me so I would just keep track of it and watch for signs of it getting worse. The spotting on Mirena is a common side effect. The doctors will tell you after three months this will get better but this is not always the case. Each individual is different in how this product will affect them and sometimes the spotting does not go away. Hopefully it will get better for you friend but your body is unique to you. This is not a product where I can tell you what is the "norm."  It seems to affect each of us so uniquely that there is no standard. I hope that you are doing well. Please post when you get the chance to let us all know how things are going for you! I am worried friend. Sending you a hug!!!!!

I have a couple of questions.  I just had my Mirena removed on Monday. I actually really liked the Mirena, it was SO convienent, and I never really had any side effects.  I just couldn't find the strings, and had to have a sonogram to find the IUD.  The Doc found it, luckily it had just moved up a bit, but he said it probably wouldn't be as effective where it was, so I had it very painfully removed.  (It was only painful because he had to "fish" it out.)  My question is, Today, 3 days later I'm passing big blood clots, is this normal after the whole fishing in my cervix routine?  I DO NOT want to go back to the Doc......  Any thoughts?  Thank You.

Just an update--am back to full strength and sanity 10 days post-removal. I'm still a bit in shock, however, at how severe my side effects were, and how quickly they resolved once the Mirena was out. I only had it for six days! I think I would have realized even sooner how badly I was reacting to it had it not been put in place at the same time as the polyp removal surgery. I was initially unsure if I was sluggish and out-of-sorts because I was recovering from surgery. Now I realize it was the Mirena and only the Mirena that was making me feel so rotten.

The spotting continued for several more days, but has finally stopped completely. Thankfully, I never had any of the heavy bleeding other have reported.

A friend of mine told me that her daughter had a similarly severe reaction to another device (a Nuvaring, I think). So these types of reactions might not be specific to the Mirena, but linked to implanting a device that contains hormones. Perhaps the release of the chemicals is not as well controlled as it is supposed to be. I know I sure felt awful. The BC pill, which I had taken for many years, never affected me this way. The hormone dosage in a pill, of course, is well standardized.

For now, I'm staying off of everything, and when George Clooney comes over, he's going to have to bring plenty of latex with him!

Update-  I had my IUD taken out almost two month ago.  When I explained my desire to have it taken out to my dr he did an ultrasound and found it was not in the correct location.  He also found numerous cycts on my left ovary where most of my pain was localized.  The removal was not too bad, one strong painful cramp.  My first period was heavy and crampy, but only lasted 3 days.
I have noticed a definate decrease in headaches, breast tenderness, amdominal pain, and painful sex.  All of these problems have improved dramatically.  Headaches down from  3 or 4 a week  to 3 or 4 a month.  As of yet I have lost maybe 2 or 3 lbs with out trying, but people keep asking if I have lost weight, I think it is b/c the bloating in my stomach has gone down.  My sex drive is about the same, but I am hoping that will improve in time.

thank you for your answer. I have finally  found the strings of iud, they are just cut short, i'm doing just fine, nothing bothers me except same fuzzy head) and spotting, i went through my first period...i can't even call it a period just the spotting was heavier for 2 days and no cramps nothing.  But i'm planning to visit my doctor this week to check if there is anything to stop this damn spotting, it's soooo annoying. And the most "pleasant" surprise as it turned out my insurance doesn't cover iud mirena), and my doctor who was sooo persuading me to have it didn't even say a word, well now i have spotting, fuzzy head) and 500$ bill) let's see what the doctor would say this week

by anom12, Oct 31, 2007 11:20PM
Just wanted to thank everyone for their stories- I was at the Dr today and was considering the Mirena, but I really don't want the hormones.  I can't deal with any more acne or anything that can make me moody! LOL
I am curious as to what exactly makes Mirena so different besides the hormones?  If I got the Copper IUD, would I be likely to experience some of these symptoms?  It sounds like most of the horror stories here are hormonal.
Also, physically, how does it feel?  Do you feel like you have something inside you?  If you move around a certain way do you feel it?  Also, I know it says you can't feel it during sex, but there are strings there, and it must be somewhere close???  The idea of strings inside me all the time makes me worry I'll get some sort of infection from having them in me.  Like they say not to leave a tampon in...I know they aren't nearly the same, but can't the strings gather bacteria????
I'm on the fence about doing this, whether it is copper iud or Mirena.... but I'm really scared about it.  I used to take the pill with no issues, but I do not want the hormones.  (i take other medication and also get migraines- so changes in my body aren't taken well)

Hey there) well i have just a little experience of having iud  but i read a lot before i had it inserted. The strings are usually cut so short u won't  even think of them, well as for sex, my friend for example had to take iud(she had copper) out as she felt it so badly it hurt, i personally don't feel a thing. I get some side effects like fuzzy head, memory troubles which are most likely hormonal, my friend didn't ave anything like it.  Spotting may occur with any iud. The tampons are not recommended because if the string are not cut short u may pull the iud out, that's what my doctor told me. But as i have written before i don't need tampons because this is not even a period...too light. And Mirena is a little bit bigger than a usual uid.  But as you may have read here everyone takes it differently because we are all individually designed i for example gained weight with pills  and couldn't loose it for about a year of exercises and diets, but having mirena for just a month i lost about 5 pounds, which doesn't mean you will have the same )) So it is your choice, and its up to you to try it or not) But it is always important to listen to your body.))

Hi there.  I have had my mirena iud for 2.5 years.  I have had acne, weight gain, severe irritability and rage, headaches, monthly yeast infections and I constantly feel bloated.   Until recently I didn't realize that the iud could be to blame.  I have discussed the irritability and rage with my gyn and he suggested I try an antidepressant even though he has seen a handful of patients who have gotten these side effects with the iud.    I elected not to try the antidepressants since I have never been depressed in all my 38 years.    I am scheduled to have the iud removed in 2 weeks and can't wait.  I just want to feel normal again and not have to take execedrin every day for my headache.  Does anyone know if after having it removed if I will lose the weight I gained?  Also, how soon with the side effects subside?   Thanks so much.

Hi friend! I am so glad that you posted your update! I remember reading your initial post and I was very worried about you! It is so great that your side effects are getting better! I am concerned about the cysts. Mirena can cause these to happen unfortunately. Is your doctor monitoring them with internal ultrasounds? If they continue to get bigger or your pain is extreme you may have to get them removed. Usually they will get smaller on their own but the doc should be taking no chances. Please do take care and do keep us updated! Thinking of you! Hugs!!!!:):):)

Hi avrora! Glad to see you were able to find your strings! I am concerned about the fuzzy head you are still experiencing. Is this getting better for you? This is something to keep an eye on in case it gets worse on you. I hope it does only get better though!!! How is your spotting? I have been using something called red raspberry leaf tea for bleeding. It has helped with my periods significantly. It is a natural uterus toner and may help with the spotting. Its worth a shot! You can find this in any natural health store. It is terrible you are stuck with paying for Mirena out of your pocket! I had the same misfortune and definitely was not happy I had to remove after three months. I will be crossing my fingers that you are doing better! Please post back friend and let us know how things go for you! Take care! :):):)

How are you doing DMBfan41? It is common to bleed after removal however if you are passing large clots you should go back to the doctor to have him check you out. Since the doc had to fish out the Mirena it is possible he may have injured something in the process. Hopefully you are feeling better and the clots have stopped. Please do post back and let us know how you are feeling! Hugs to you!:):):)

Hi friend! Sorry to hear that you have been suffering so much! I am disturbed that your doctor suggested putting you on an antidepressant! Mirena's own prescribing info lists Depression as one of its adverse affects. It should have been crystal clear to your doc that your depression stemmed from Mirena. Though the doctor would get some sort of kick back from the antidepressant so that could be why he recommended this. I hope it was just a mistake on his part but I wonder sometimes why a doc who has this info available to him could get it wrong ever! Here is the website for you that has this info:
http://www.contracept.info/docs/mirena-doctors.pdf

Mirena is also known to cause headaches sometimes even migraines as a side effect. It is not recommended for individuals with previous migraine history as the hormone can make the migraines worsen. If you are experiencing headaches it is most likely a side effect from the chemical in Mirena. If you look closely at the previous site you will also see weight gain and acne listed. This is by no means a complete list of side effects but these are the ones the Mirena makers disclose up front.(prescribing doctors info) This is another site for you to visit that lists even more side effects that Mirena can cause:

http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100001706.html

I am glad you did not allow the Dr. to put you on the antidepressants. I think you are making a wise choice to remove! My OBGYN says to give it at least six months time to recover from Mirena. I personally saw my side effects get better pretty soon after removal.(I also experienced severe rage/mood swings on Mirena and a whole laundry list of others) If you find that any of the side effects are lingering on you then it would be best to have your hormone levels checked to see if anything is going on post Mirena with any hormone imbalances. I think if your hormone levels are normal then you should see some weight loss but give it the full six months. Each of us is different so it is difficult to give you an exact time frame for side effects getting better but hopefully this info helps some! I do hope that everything goes smoothly with removal! Take it easy for the first few days! Drink lots of water to help flush the chemicals out of your body!! I do hope you are feeling much better very soon!!!!! Big Hug to you!!!:)

Hi friend! Mood swings and headaches can be side effects from Mirena. The doctors do not usually acknowledge this however. They seem to think Mirena is the miracle BC and can do no wrong. For some I have seen this to be true but for so many more I have seen it be more of a nightmare BC. The hormone in Mirena can also mess with your sex drive so this could be to blame for that! I do think as far as the abnormal smell goes, I have read other posts that state the smell went away after removal. I also experienced this smell with Mirena in though it was not constant and it disappeared after removal. It is best to get a thorough exam done by your doc to rule out any infections. Mirena can definitely cause infections to occur and sometimes they are recurring infections. It is your choice to keep or remove Mirena but for your overall health I think you should monitor the side effects and if they do not get better you may have to get it removed. I hope that you know what ever you decide, you will be supported! I will be thinking of you friend and hoping you feel better right away! Please let us know how everything turns out for you! Hug to you!!:)

Hi))) thank you for your concerns. Well so far, the bleeding got heavier and i don't like it...but fuzzy head doesn't bother me anymore and i'm so happy. As for the raspberry leaf tea, it helped me when i just had mirena inserted and nothing even vicodin didn't work! And i agree i'll try to drink it from time to time, i like the taste of it by the way, but it's important to be careful because it may cause constipation. But it does work. I'll tell you if it works for spotting for me). Now i have only two issues - spotting and my skin is a mess and wait a third one... i've become so emotional, i mean i don't have mood swings but i cry because of any small things.... no mood swings ...just tears for everything lol Anyway, i'll keep posting my results with tea and spotting)

I'm a twenty year old woman. I am not sexually active(in fact, never have been, still a virgin) but I have been recommended this IUD because of my severe cramping. Every month it's the same thing: sweating, shaking, vomiting, diarreha and such. I can't even stand up straight when my cramps are at their worst. It's very hard to get out of bed during this time also. I'm looking for a BC that could lessen my cramps and period or take it away all together. Considering that I am not sexually active will I still be at risk for a lot of the side effects, if that's a factor? Thank you for any help.

I am also relieved to hear your fuzzy head is better! This was something that I had the entire time Mirena was in so it is a positive sign that it got better for you!:) I hope it stays away permanently:) Thanks for sharing that constipation can be a side effect from the tea. I never knew this was a concern so now I will be aware and add some extra fiber when I am taking the tea!! So it sounds like you are still having some additional side effects as well. Acne can be a side effect from the chemical in Mirena and it is not uncommon to feel side effects similar to preganancy from Mirena(ie. weeping, emotional, etc.) I know I have said this to you already but please do keep a watch on these and post back with any concerns! So I will be hoping friend that you are able to have success with Mirena and that the side effects settle down for you soon! Please do keep us posted!:):):)

Hi friend! So I will try to answer your questions as best I can! First off, this Mirena is not recommended as a first choice for women who have never been pregnant. There are many reasons for this. The two that stick out in my mind are: expulsion of the Mirena is more common in women who have not had children and the IUD can cause scarring which could make it impossible to get pregnant(this is rare but can happen). If you are experiencing severe cramping you may have endometriosis or cysts? Has your doc done the necessary tests to check for either of these issues?  Another issue that can cause cramping is an imbalance of hormones. Some women have a condition known as estrogen dominance that can create numerous side effects on a daily basis or for pre-menopausal women it can hit hardest around period time(and a little before). (FYI, it also seems to be a concern that estrogen dominance may occur after use of Mirena in some women. I have been to another site where this has been mentioned as a reason why some women are not able to get completely rid of some side effects post Mirena.) A simple saliva test to check your progesterone/estrogen levels would help your doc know if this is why you are suffering such severe side effects.  There is some natural progesterone cream you could use around period time or right before it to help ease the side effects.(this should only be used if your levels are off progesterone too low/estrogen too high) There is a site from Dr. Lam that talks more about this and if you are interested just Google his name and you should find a lot about this hormone imbalance referred to as estrogen dominance. I think your doc should spend some time getting to the root of what is causing you to have such debilitating side effects! There are BC's that will take away your period but you will need to research them so you will know the serious risks associated with their use. So as far as sexual activity affecting side effects this is not a factor in determining if you will get side effects from BC. The only thing that determines how you will react on a certain BC is your body! There are some of our bodies that do not do well with chemical BC and there are some on here who get along just fine! Again I cannot stress enough the importance of having a competent doc do the necessary follow up for your symptoms! Please do not hesitate to post back with any additional questions or concerns! I hope these answers help you out friend! It is your body and your decision! Let us know how everything turns out! Hope you are able to get some answers soon so you can feel better!!! Big Hug!!!!:):):)

Thank you for all the information.

I was on another webpage and noticed a lot of women who have not had children yet talking about how it's still ok to get this IUD. I think someone mentioned the size of your uterus as being a factor. Is there any truth in that?

I have not actually been to do the doctor's about this as I don't have insurance at the moment, but I've been dealing with these cramps since I first started my period and now  I'm just becoming so fed up with the pain because it's unbearable. When I was younger my doctor told me it was normal to have bad cramps though. However, sometimes my body doesn't respond to Ibuprofen and such. So this is why I'm looking at all methods to try to end my period all together but still be able to have children when I'm ready.

Also, I noticed a lot of women on here talking about how this IUD made them depressed. Would it counter act my severe depression? I know some medicines work like that, like giving Ritalin to someone who does not have ADD.

I'm very worried about going through this step, but I can't swallow pills, and can't really keep up with them either. I'm still considering the depo shot, but just want to cover all my options.

Thank You for any advice :)

Although I am only 23 years old, had my son when I was 19 while on Ortho-tricycy--I am getting through this last year with my Mirena. I think this is absolutely the best BC anyone could get. My son was 3 months when I got it inserted (I wasn't about to have another "oops"). I had "issues" with cramping, bloating, heavy periods, no sex drive at all for about the first year-year 1/2. I bared through it because the benefits much outweighed the alternative....I have noticed that my libido is extremely low--if any at all  at times--and I have had on and off issues with bacterial vaginosis. Sex is somewhat uncomfortable in certain positions---but like I said and will always live by---the benefits greatly outweigh the alternative. I am just being completely honest and non biased. I do think that insurance should cover this device as well as other methods of BC (I had 3 ins to have this covered with a $40 co-pay). I like the benefit of not having to worry about a daily pill or "hey we gotta ruin the moment to put on a condom..etc" and 5 years is a perfect time frame between kids (especially for young ppl--sometimes older too!) I don't think I will get one immediately after removal of this one but I will get it again after my second child (that and I only really want two kids...lol) Sucks to hear a lot of you guys have had problems. Although it sucks to say, but other than an infection, PID, perforation or pregnancy, you guys are wimps to have it ripped out after such a short time frame--paid a lot to just have it removed. It is a localized hormone therefore the depression that you all speak about is practically impossible--it does NOT go systemic. Most of you sound like you had a baby just before insertion right? PPD shows up after birth of a child up to two or so years......Just keep that in mind. Good luck and just because you hear stories of other's bad experiences doesn't mean yours will be bad....every BODY is different and reacts different, especially to foreign objects. Your OB will let you know if you are an appropriate candidate....and your body. Talk your concerns with your OB. they've seen way more patients with good/bad reactions than you or any other person on this thread....and if you're not comfortable with that--there's always another medical "second opinion" available to you.

To quoute you  - "you guys are wimps to have it ripped out after such a short time frame" - I find this very offensive.  While you may find it wonderful, many do not.  Like you said yourself, every person may have a different experience so please don't judge soley on your experience.    The symptoms that many people have including myself are real!

Hi! Thank you for sharing your opinion with us. I agree that every BODY is different. And reactions are different. I'm 25 and i have never had kids before and may be because of it or may be because of my own reasons i don't have depressions etc, though i have other issues that have nothing to do with emotional condition or anyone's opinion in this thread - i'm talking about spotting/bleeding and i mean every single day bleeding for already 2 months! and skin issues. If i can handle the skin issues, doesn't mean i'll wait for a year or year and 1/2 to have bleeding stopped, because it is exhausting, i can't go swimming i can't wear certain type of clothes and i have to deal with pads every single day and the worst part - my husband isn't happy about blood. So it's not crying over spilled milk  as u may suppose it is exhausting. And it's not depression or smthing else emotional, it is just not healthy. And i believe that if i pay 900$ for my insurance it MUST cover UID, especially including accidents like uid got expelled or other troubles. You were lucky to have everything ok or being able to go through problems. I try to do the same and it works for me, but bleeding is not smthing i can stop with a blink of an eye. My OB is a young woman with no kids and she has UID with no issues at all, including bleeding, all she can tell me - keep waiting, but it's not her who's getting rash or irritation from pads, or upset face of a husband, it's me and only me with my so different from everyone else's body! So what do i do? I keep listening to my body which doesn't  mean i run to the OB's office to pull iud out because smone told it's not good, but it's useful to see some opinions and to know that you are not the only one who has it. I'm going to keep uid up to 3-5 month it's my limit for bleeding issue, i had sever periods and i have had mirena inserted not for living with my periods on a daily basis for 2 month. But if something else occurs i will definitely go to the OB for a medical opinion first of all. It's great that you have no troubles now, hope it'll keep the same way. Unfortunately it doesn't work the same way for every BODY.

Hi friends! I just wanted to share the following official site from Mirena:

http://www.contracept.info/docs/mirena-doctors.pdf

To the poster who referred to some of us as wimps, you need to do some more research regarding your incorrect comments. Depression is listed in Mirena's own literature(the doc's prescribing info), as well as many other adverse affects that you do not mention. If so many women are experiencing this PPD then why do I hear more often then not that the depression started only after the IUD was put in? It would be more likely to be PPD if it happened anywhere in the six week period before insertion of Mirena. The docs like to diagnose PPD or regular depression because then they get to write another prescription that puts more $ in their pockets. There are women who come here in need of assistance and will listen to comments that are posted and you do them a disservice in sharing incorrect information. For your own health as well, it would do you some good to look into the complete possible side effects so you are better informed. Funny the docs like to say the same thing you did, the hormone is local to the cervix, but the prescribing info that is right at their fingertips says otherwise.( A % of hormone is circulated in the bloodstream and Mirena does not know how it gets metabolized(how it leaves the body))This Mirena is a big $ maker for them and they sure like to push it as a miracle BC. If you truly are able to get along with this with minimal side effects then Mirena has worked for you but if you are suffering through it to get to the light at the end of the tunnel then you are putting your body and your hormone balances at risk. If it feels bad then your body is YELLING at you telling you something is wrong. You can either listen or not. Its your body and you have to live in it and with it. There are other non chemical ways to prevent future babies.

I cannot emphasize enough the need to research this and any BC method so you and only you are in charge of the decisions. The doctors are not always truthful in giving the whole picture.(as you will so clearly see when you read the prescribing docs info for Mirena) If anyone has any concerns or questions they would like answered please post anytime! I truly am so happy for those of you with positive experiences with Mirena! Please continue to share your experience so other posters can see some get on well with this BC. For those of you who have suffered or are still suffering, my heart goes out to each and every one of you! It is cruel what this BC can do to some of us! It is ridiculous that the doctors are not disclosing the whole truth about what can happen with this BC in turn leaving so many in the dark for so long about their symptoms. I hope that with time for our bodies to recover, we will all see a healthy and happy future!!!!! Take care friends!!! Hugs to all of you!!!

Hi there!

Yes there are plenty of women who get this BC who have not had children before but I was sharing that Mirena does not recommmend it as a first choice. There are a lot of women with health problems such as yours that doctors will go ahead and recommend it for anyway. I just wanted to make you aware of some major risks associated with use in a women who has never had children:) If you do decide to get this BC after doing the research, I would request the doc give you a local anesthetic because it will be painful. In women who have given birth it is less painful. You are truly suffering so terribly and I do understand the need to feel better ASAP! I am so sorry this is happening to you! I do think with a competent doctor he may be able to find a root cause to your pain!

The doc who told you painful cramps are normal, was inaccurate in saying that to you. Women who experience painful cramps like yours usually do so because they have underlying conditions causing the severe cramps. This doctor should have been running tests on you to see if you have endometriosis or cysts. I would find a new doctor ASAP. Even with no insurance you should be able to make payment arrangements with the doc or you could go and see someone at planned parenthood(they usually have a sliding scale fee schedule). It is so important for you to get this followed up on!

Did you get some time to research estrogen dominance? This could be another cause of why you are having terrible cramps. It can also cause severe depression as well. There is a fix for this and could be easily diagnosed with a saliva test on your 21st day after your period. Sorry I keep mentioning this but a lot of women get bad period side effects and this is sometimes the cause.
:)

Regarding the depression, yes Mirena's literature states depression as a side effect. Unfortunately, because it is a chemical BC it can and does sometimes make depression worse. I will send you to another forum and maybe you can ask the ladies there about the depression issue with Mirena. I do not know if being on meds for depression would lessen this side effect happening but it would be worth looking into. The site is CureZone and the forum is Mirena IUD. They are all very smart and educated women and I know they will have some answers for you!!!

I am so glad that you are asking questions and gathering all the answers you need to make an informed decision.  My sis doesn't like to swallow pills either!:) Please keep us updated friend and continue to post back with any concerns what so ever!!!:) Take care!!! Healing thoughts to you!:):):)

I would like to comment on your comment that you left on saying that we are all wimps well I had the mirena in for 2 years and I suffered for those 2 years and you know nothing about the women that are suffering and if they choose to have it removed after a few months then so be it you shouldnt be so dumb and call people what you called them next time MAKE SURE YOU DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU JUDGE PEOPLE OKAY I SUFFERED FOR 2 YEARS AND IF WOMEN FELT BAD AFTER A FEW MONTHS THEN YOU ARE NOT THEM AND YOU HAVE NO ROOM TO TALK OKAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DONT JUDGE PEOPLE THAT YOU DONT KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

If you were able to get rid of side effects from just thinking about it then you are and were not experiencing what the rest of us are. Your advice to the fellow posters on here stems from pure ignorance about this product.

To all other posters:
Please visit the site I listed from the official Mirena makers and do not listen to opinions that are being spitefully posted in hopes of minimizing all of our suffering with this product. Happy health to all!!!!!!

how crazy is it for someone to suffer for years before removing it, I guess it wasn't that bad till you read that everyone has the same side effects and panic kicks in.Springwater5000 I got rid of the side effects by not thinking about it, and who would put an object in them that they didnt research about first? I researched for 2 weeks and got it done i was fine till I read about everyone else and started to feel the same , stopped reading everyones horror stories and im fine again. Mind over matter.

This is not a debate forum. There are individuals like yourself that like to come to sites like this just to stir things up.

To all  posters please continue to know that side effects that are genuine can happen at anytime even if you have never experienced side effects. It is important to be aware of what can happen as a precaution. The Mirena website that I listed before will have some of the side effects that can happen. The side effects are real and contrary to what has been posted you CANNOT think them away. Please post with any concerns or questions! Big Hugs!:)

oh well if only arguing was curing)) as for me, so i started drinking raspberry leaf tea, everyday, 2 cups, i'm not sure if that was a tea help or ...my husband's))) but spotting reduced to actual spotting instead of bleeding. But last night i had experienced basic symptoms of yeast infection...burning, irritation and pardon me it was painful to pee because the skin outside was so irritated. Why i think it is weird is because i am on anti fungal pills, my OB prescribed me Fluconazol or simply Deflucan one pill a week for 6 month to completely forget about my forever existing yeast infections. So i am surprised why did i get it... besides it's just itching and irritation with burning. I thought may be it is because of pads, i have to use them everyday for 2 month already because of bleeding. So i've got some Monistat , my OB says none of these creams work, but they can ease uncomfortable irritated skin feeling. So i used it for the night, just outside. Today it's still burning, still it's a problem to go to the restroom, and as i used monistat i can't go to the doctor, because i need to be 24 hours clear from cream, and i made an appointment for tomorrow to figure everything out...and the doctor's assistant mentioned that it could be a case of a bacterial infection...great... i'll post the result here soon.

LOL you are so right friend! :) Yeah ! So glad to see your bleeding has improved! My blood doc asked me why my bleeding had gotten better and I told him it was the red raspberry leaf tea and he seemed amused by this and as long as the bleeding was better he didn't argue:) I know this bleeding can get better for some so I will be crossing my fingers that it continues to get better for you friend! I am so sorry to hear that you are experiencing an infection! Hopefully your doc will have some medicine he/she can give you to help you feel better! Please do post back and let us know how you are doing! Good luck at the doc's tomorrow!!!:):):)

Hey girl) thank u for concern , well about my visit to the OB: i have got nothing but the yeast infection and a small amount of bacterias, she explained it exactly as i thought - pads, irritation came from this.  So she has prescribed me Clindesse or clindamycin phosphate vaginal cream. And to take double shot of fluconazol...which i'm not really crazy about as it has a serious impact on liver. But thank God there is nothing serious. Bleeding turned back to spotting, which is a great sign... We'll see how i'm going to be doing  in a week)

To the posters judging others as "wimps" whose side effects are "all in their heads," I wish you could have experienced what I went through. I wouldn't wish it on anyone else: just judgmental, unsympathetic folk who don't care to understand the suffering of other people.

On the Mirena, I was transformed into an almost unrecognizable version of me. Within a minute--LITERALLY--of its removal, I began to feel like myself again. I had the Mirena in for all of SIX days. Without the honest postings of women on this board, I might not have realized so quickly what was going on. What I learned here--along with input from my primary care doc and my family--help me make the decision to have it removed immediately.

An update for those of you do care: I seem to be experiencing no lasting consequences. I had a slightly heavier than normal period, but this is the first time in 9 years I have been off hormonal BC (pills) entirely. So far, so good. I've been waiting to make my adverse event reports to the drug company and the FDA--to make sure that there has been no permanent damage to my health--but I think I'm going to be okay. I thank all of you for your support, and send everyone my best thoughts too!

well...it's been a 4th day...all my symptoms are the same, unbearable pain while urinating, irritated skin, even little sore wounds... i have never suffered like this...i called a doctor on call and the only thing she could say was to use some vagisil, of course it doesn't make me feel any better...i am mad, frustrated and in fear every  time i have to go to the restroom....i'll try to make an appointment for tomorrow again... i don't care if i visit my doctor too often, otherwise i'll have to change her...and i keep thinking does this iud worth to go through such pain...

Hi there friend! I am so upset to see that you are suffering so much! I am worried about your health! Will you be able to get in to see the doc right away then? So here are a few things to share with the doc: Could it be a staph infection? Could it be a full blown urinary tract infection (which would require an antibiotic of some sort I am sure)? I want to help make you aware that Mirena can cause yeast infections to occur. If it is a yeast infection as the doc previously diagnosed and you find it continues and does not get better with treatment it could be Mirena to blame. I am not 100% clear on the hows and whys but I have read the Mirena can make our private area more susceptible to infections(yeast infections included). This would be something to discuss with your doc as well.  It is definitely your right to see your doctor as often as you need. It is important for your health to have an understanding, competent doc who knows that it is important to monitor you while using this Mirena. It is always up to you to keep Mirena or remove. Some good advice would be if the IUD keeps interferring with your happiness and health it could be time to reevaluate the pros and cons of the IUD for you friend! Please know I say this only as a friend and do not wish to pressure you in any way. I hope this pain will pass quickly for you and the doc is able to get to the root of the pain. I am crossing my fingers that Mirena works out for you and that you are restored to 100% health right away! Take care friend and please do post back and let us know what happens tomorrow at your doc's!! BIG HUG TO YOU!!!!:):):)

Hi friend...well no good news so far... My OBG suspects i have herpes... and the only unprotected sex i had was with my husband, though as she said condoms protect from herpes only 50%, and the fact that my husband is a second man i have sex with doesn't make it any better. I cried with doctor together about having mirena and now it's all seems to be for in vane. I have no symptoms of anything else from iud, even spotting stopped and i'm just fine. The urination became normal, no pain, but those blisters she suspected are herpes. Anyway i'll know about test results in several days and let you know. She also told me that it's possible that i've been having it for a long time and just never had an outbreak  and vaginosis  with yeast helped to get an outbreak...gosh i wish i never knew... it's hard to get a virus u can't blame anyone for ....just because u don't know...

Oh my goodness friend! I am so so sorry! Is the test the doc doing thorough enough to diagnose herpes as the cause of the blisters? I have to share with you that my eight month old daughter was having yeast infection after yeast infection and one day it changed and there were red blisters/welts and the doc told us it was a staph infection. I guess I am trying to say is that hopefully the test will be negative. If it does come back positive then there is medicine that can be given to help with the outbreaks. I don't know much about herpes but it seems that your husband needs to get checked as well.

Your concerns about Mirena were valid friend and sharing them with your doctor was necessary. I know the docs can try to make us feel like crazy people for sharing that we believe our side effects can be caused by their Mirena, but side effects can and do happen with this IUD(as is noted in the Mirena literature and are posted by so many of us on this site) so you were very smart to be assertive about your health and to proceed with caution with the Mirena.

I am so truly sorry you are dealing with this terrible news from your doc. I will say a prayer for you that the test is negative! Thiinking of you friend and sending you lots of light and hope!!!:):):)

Hi there,
This is the first time I have been on this forum but i have also had continual infections and was interested to read your story as it is very similar to mine. My doctor told me I had herpes and i felt so sick until the results came back and they were negative. It was  strep A, a skin infection. I got it again 4 weeks later, same thing. If i get it again she would like me back and I will be refferred to a specialist. Since reading this site i am wondering if it is my Mirena. I totally understand how you are feeling, it was on my mind 24hours a day. Hope all goes well.

Thank you my friend...yes it's sad. I'm waiting for my results, but meanwhile my doc put me on Valtrex  i guess this is the name. I honestly suspect i don't have a herpes...because the day she diagnosed me with that i had read everything i could about it, and i don't think it is herpes. So i'm waiting for results...and this Valtrex makes me feel as if i have a flu, fever, joint pain, it is a side effect. So i'm praying she's wrong. Thank you for yr concern, yr words were comforting), I'll keep posting the results. Happy Thanksgiving to you too))

Hey)) thank you very much for sharing this information with me, as i wrote before i alos suspect it's not the herpes but yeast infection + vaginosis which caused such sever irritation, besides i saw only bleeding wounds but not blisters as it is usually described  but my OBG said those are blisters...well i hope she's wrong. Because i've been having unprotected sex with my husband for more than 4 years and i have never had anything no outbreaks,  i have never also had it on my lips. So i hope it's just those 2 infections that caused the terrible irritation,  besides i have very sensitive skin. Anyway thank u very much for yr information. I really appreciate it)

Well I just wanted to ask a few questions and give my experience about the IUD.  Well I just recently, as of last week, had my Mirena-IUD because I start noticing that I was having some weird symptons.  I had it in for over a year . I had gotten the IUD because I had severe cramping and bleeding during my periods due to Endometriosis and the doctor told me that this would be the best for me due to the Endometriosis. Anyhow, well the cramping and heavy bleeding went away while I had the Mirena. But I did noticed that I start gaining weight and feeling like I was pregnant. Even having cravings for food as if I was pregnant. Then I start having pain on one side of my abdomen, that only happened during my menstrual cycle. Some ways or another I felt really good because my periods were lighter and hardly any cramping. But I was also noticing that I was getting very irritated with my 4 now 5 year old son. I felt bad because I never thought that I could feel that way about him. I also noticed that I kindof felt depressed or like something was wrong with me. I didn't want to go and seek help  because I didn't want anyone to think I wasn't able to take care of my kid. Because by all means, doctors do make you feel like something is wrong with you because it isn't normal for normal people to feel this way...LOL...well some of you probably know what I am talking about. Anyhow, but yeah, I noticed it was having a impact on me too but didn't realize until I really start doing some research myself and seeing that other women was having some of the same symtoms. And we should all know that we are all different and our bodies act differently to the same meds. So some people could have bad or good experience with the IUD. I do want to say though, that I am glad that I had it removed. Its only been a week but I am back to playing with my son without getting irrated with him:D My body does seem a little out of wack though. To get to the questions, is it normal to be bleeding heavily after it is removed, with blood clots and cramps that won't quit. Then my next question is if it is normal then how long should it last for? My last and final question is, how soon can you get pregnant wants it is removed. My husband and I really want to try right away for another baby. He just got back from Iraq and realized that he too wants another kid...hurray ...for me:D

by cueteepye27, Nov 25, 2007 02:38PM
I have read many of the messages people wrote and I'm a little freaked out.  My doctor mentioned that Mirena would be an option for me since I need to change my BC due to insurance reasons.  Just wondering if anyone who has NOT been pregnant has any advice/words of wisdom?  I heard insertion might be more painful, etc.  thanks!

Hi! I have Mirena and never had kids before, neither pregnant. It is a bit painful, feels like a very long strong cramp, but it is bearable. I believe it is very individual, and depends on a person.I had  up to 5 days of non stop pain from insertion, i believe it was because my uterus was getting used to mirena, so i was on painkillers. As for how you can handle having mirena well this is purely individual, i had all the side effects mentioned here, but they went away, but i have also gotten bacterial infection within first 3 month of usage... so it's all up to you at this point) good luck)

Hi there! I do not know much about the copper IUD but I do know it is not recommended for women who have any bleeding issues as it can cause severe bleeding to happen for long periods of time. As with any IUD there are pros and cons with use so it would be wise to read the doctors prescribing info before making your decision so you are better informed of the risks. Good Luck to you friend whatever your decision may be!:)

Hi there! I am glad to read that you have gotten Mirena removed. I also suffered from mood swings and rage on top of that(not to mention a whole laundry list of other side effects) and I did not see this get better until I removed, so I know you made a wise decision to remove:) The bleeding after removal can be extremely heavy and it is not uncommon for some women to have clots. This can be very debilitating and if the bleeding is saturating a pad an hour or more you will need to go to the hospital. You will also want to get your blood checked to see if you are anemic as the blood loss can cause this to occur. The cramps I did not experience but I have read other women who have experienced this side effect after removal. If this does not get better or you notice pain in your abdomen you will want your doc to check you for cysts(Mirena can cause these and they can be painful) It would be a good idea to have the doc check for any kind of infection as Mirena can also cause infections to occur. I want you to know that it is most likely your body getting itself back to normal after Mirena has been removed. It can take quite some time for the body to get back to a balance again after removal so give it at least six months. The bleeding and cramps should get better soon but if they don't you need to get checked out ASAP by the doc:)

You can get pregnant anytime after the IUD is removed but I would strongly recommend waiting at least 6-8 weeks so you give your body time to get the chemicals out and at least start the recovery process. I say this for your health friend and please do not listen to me if you are wanting to start right away. :) I know that with your husband back home you both will probably not want to wait:):)

I hope that you are doing better! Please keep us posted with your progress! Hugs!:):):)

Hi!
I'm 21 and I've just had my Mirena inserted. I can tell you I had never felt such an intense pain in my life as when I was getting it in. I hurt pretty bad the few hours after it, but I got plenty of rest and now I hardly feel anything. I have high hopes for Mirena since I've tried all types of BC available in the market and nothing worked. It's been now 5 days since I got Mirena and I feel great!
I was told I was going to have intense cramps for a few days after the insertion of Mirena, but I can say I'm very happy that the amount of after pain I got is not nearly as bad as I expected. I've never had a baby before and have never been pregnant either, so I was very scared of it. Just make sure you get a doctor who is EXPERIENCED in inserting Mirena on women who had not had a baby before. If you get someone that is unexperienced, you might have a really bad time and it can also be dangerous for you!
Good luck to you and everyone else in this forum! =)

Thank you for posting! I think that if Mirena is inserted in a women who has never had children they should give you a local anesthetic. I also think the docs need to give a clearer picture of what the pain could be like and also an honest assessment of side effects and bleeding so you are better informed ahead of time. I am happy to see you are doing better and I wish you continued health and happiness friend! Please post back and keep us all updated about how things go for you!:)

I already posted in this thread but, I figured I'd post again.

Just like a majority of you I had a horrific experience with the Mirena IUD. The first day of insertion I had what I honest to god thought was the flu and my joints hurt terribly. I had bad anxiety, acne, severe cramping and a myriad of other symptoms as well. About a month later I had the most intense cramps of my life to the point I was doubled over. The gyn checked me out and said the strings were present and that it was probably just some bad cramps caused by the IUD still settling in (a month later?) He told me to take 800mg of Ibuprofen and just deal with it so to speak.

Well they did go away and another two months went by until I was sent for an US by my GI for bowel problems. It was then discovered that the IUD had migrated into my cervical canal and was stuck there. Apparently that's what caused the horrible cramps I had prior when the doc just told me to suck it up.

I can't blame my IUD for all my symptoms because I had other issues as well. The US also revealed that I had two large (tennis ball sized) cysts, one on each ovary that required surgery and during the surgery it was discovered that I had horrible endo and that my left ovary had to be removed. This was a shock to me since I always had very regular and uneventful periods and absolutely no pain whatsoever.

My gyn who did the surgery said that the IUD probably did not cause most of those symptoms, but it didn't help them any either. Basically it was the straw that broke the camels back and with that thing sitting in my uterus my whole reproductive system said ENOUGH!

So just remember ladies to research all types of birth control to find ones that will best suit your needs and find a good doctor who will listen. Also be wary of all the negative information you read on the internet as well. Many of the posters work for natural herbal remedy places and will post bad info on the product just to get you onto theirs. Another thing you don't know the medical conditions of the other posters who are complaining of their side effects. One woman I was talking to was saying that the IUD gave her severe headaches. After I visited her MySpace page I found out she was severely overweight and diabetic as well as on 5 different prescription medications. See what I mean?

So all I can say is be safe and in the long run listen to what your body is telling you.

My experience with the Mirena.

For about 6 years I had been using birth control pills.  When I would get my period, it was very bad.  Very painful and heavy, I would be completely out of commission, this was how it had always been, even before BC.  I had had a history of depression and weight gain as well.  I wanted to try the Mirena IUD because I was scared about getting pregnant one day.  I had been reading forums like this one, trying to learn more about Mirena and I nearly canceled my appointment because of the horror stories I read here.  I decided to try anyway, and I had it put in 7 months ago.  Insertion was painful, but not unbearable.  I got it done at a women's clinic and I the doctor was very experienced and skilled with IUDs.  The strings were left long for the first month so that removal would be easy if necessary.  I did spot a little the first week.  When I went back a month later, an ultra-sound checked the position of the IUD and the strings were trimmed.  Sex was comfortable, and my DH could not feel it.  I have not had my period since getting the Mirena.  I have had no side effects, and have in fact lost weight since getting it.  I would recommend it to everyone.  The worst part of the whole thing was the fear I had the first day, and that was due only to the horror stores I've read on this site and similar ones.

Hi girl)))!!! Thank you for yr kind words! I am doing better herpes wise, though when  i told the nurse that i want a blood test in addition to their test she was terrible trying to persuade me not to waste my time, but i have done the blood test too, now waiting, my husband did it too. But right after i stopped taking valtrex for herpes, I've got nasty case of what i believe is bacterial infection, because there is no way fluconazole doesn't work for yeasts. So I'm  going to the doctor on Tuesday and i believe we gonna have very  serious conversation, because i have as minimum spent half of this month at her office. I need something that will work, I'm really tired torturing my liver and kidneys ...Mirena wise - i don't feel it, i didn't have any period or spotting this month and it is a 3 month i have it i believe. Instead i had painful cramps as during the wost period and this is it so far. My skin is back to normal again.  I do experience some unusual pain from time to time in ovaries but i believe many woman experience while having mirena. I'll keep you posted if anything else occurs). And to those who writes that this thread is only to scare. When I've got herpes out of the blue, i was really depressed but i did my best reading everything i could have possibly find. And one of my friends told me once - why do u do this, isn't it enough pain for you? Don't you wanna sleep well? To what i replied - It is not about sleeping well or get scared it is about being aware and NOT to get scared in future if there is anything new occurs. Having information is extremely important, but taking decisions is all yours!
