High blood pressure/menapause/anxiety, meds are helping but still feel crazy

What does high blood presssure have to do with menapause? I'm on wellbutrin, xanax, and diovan for anxiety, stress and high blood pressure.  I've lost some weight but i have alot to go. There are days all i want to do is stay in bed..even on the meds.  I want to feel normal again...I'm 50 and scared about many more years of feeling like this.

Thanks so much for all your comments...I've been on wellbutrin for 2 months along with occasional xanax the same time.  The diozan was just started on 8/19.  I'm also going next week to see a stress management counselor recommended by my dr.  Also my moods are all over the place...I'm hoping the counselor will help with all of it.

I'd think the weight and your diet/exercise probably have more to do with your high blood pressure than menopause. As for the Wellbutrin, it definitely is as strong as any other antidepressant, but it works a bit differently from some of the rest. It may or may not be the right one for you - it's like anything else, and often it's just trial and error. I can see why she put you on it, because it's pretty well known for its lack of some of the negative side effects of the SSRIs. It usually results in weight loss, not weight gain, and it doesn't take a bite out of your sex drive the way the SSRIs can. It is also a mild stimulant (sometimes used for ADHD), so it can make you feel less slug-like :-) But as I said, it's not right for everyone. But how long have you been taking the meds? If it's less than a month, I'd say give it some time. The dosage may also need to be adjusted, so you might want to consider seeing a psychiatrist, rather than a family doctor, if you're not already. A psychiatrist will be used to making the fine adjustments these meds sometimes need. And are you also in therapy? I think often our thinking patterns have as much, if not more, to do with our mental state as anything else. Therapy can help you learn new ways of looking at things, and new ways of coping with stress and anxiety in your life.

Good luck - hope you feel better soon!

hey there
you are on alot of meds and they could be conflicting with each other.  I hate to go against another doctor but they CANNOT tell you with any certainty that a drug is going to make you gain weight.  These meds affect every single person differently and what makes one person gain 5 pounds will make another person lose 5 pounds.  I take Zoloft for anxiety/mild depression and I can tell you it made me LOSE weight in the beginning, about 8 pounds.  Ive gained weight naturally over the years due to genetics and age but it aint because of the Zoloft.  All you can do is give them a try.  When I say give them a try it means at least 2 to 3 months before you really know what in the heck it is doing for you.  It may be the lack of estrogen that raises blood pressure.  Don't know.

with all of those meds, how do you know whats working, whats not? my sister was on a few meds at the same time and she had all these other problems and took meds for those (when they were merely side effects of the origional meds.) not only that, she became addicted to one in particular. just be careful taking so many. i too have anxiety and sometimes take (xanax) but i dont seem to need it as much sine i got it and know its there. i have also taken lorezipam which seemed to do well for me. sometimes its all the meds that can make ya feel crazy. hopefully you can find 1 that will do the trick and you can wean off the others. my sisters personality got lost in her meds. i didnt really know which one "sherry" was?

My dr wanted to try zoloft but she said it would cause me to gain weight...just what I need!  She wants me to try all three meds first to see what happens with the bp.  The xanax does take the edge off when the wellbutrin wears off. Thanks

See if your doctor will switch you to a different anti-depressant.  Wellbutrin is not a very powerful one.
