High blood pressure pills

I am on high blood pressure pills and have been for the last 3 years.  Does anyone know if these pills can affect pregnancy?  If so, how?  Also, can they affect the outcome of an HPT?

There are certain types of blood pressure medications that aren't generally used in pregnancy.

It seems to me that I read somewhere that there is a certain diuretic that can cause a false positive pregnancy test, but I can't find it at the moment.  Your local pharmacist would be a good source of info on this.

If you are considering becoming pregnant, it is a good idea to meet with your doctor and discuss what medications you should or shouldn't be on, PRIOR to conceiving.  Good luck!

YES, they definatley do!! I was on Blood pressure pills. My dr switched them to a "safer" one. I misscarried 2x's, and then was switched to Aldoment. A different Dr told me this is the safest, and most used hbp drug while preggo. I took it my whole 9 mo and now have a beautiful baby girl.....good luck

Thanks for the advice!  I did speak to my doctor awhile back and he assured me that my pills would not affect me while trying to conceive.  But now that I'm week late and 2 negative HPT's, I'm getting a little concerned.  I've done searches on the net and some of the things that I've read are very conflicting.  Some say it's okay to be on them and other don't.  I'm very confused and scared at the same time.  I'm hoping that the next test that I take is positive and that the pills that I am on are okay to be taking.

Hi mimik!  Which hbp pills were you on the first time?  How long were you on them?  I am on Atenolol (50mg).  I think I will go speak to my doctor again.  Congratulations on your baby girl!

Atenolol is a pregnancy category D drug.  It can cause intrauterine growth retardation in the second trimester.

Here is the official categorization of class D drugs: "Adequate well-controlled or observational studies in pregnant women have demonstrated a risk to the fetus.
However, the benefits of therapy may outweigh the potential risk. For example, the drug may be acceptable if needed in a life-threatening situation or serious disease for which safer drugs cannot be used or are ineffective."

Speak to your doctor about whether there is another drug that you could use.  Aldomet is used frequently during pregnancy, as was pointed out earlier.

When i first ttc, i was on hyzaar.....very very bad for pregnancy. I thne was put on someting but i cant remember the name. I was only on it about a mo, then i mc again, so they thought it was that!! Aso, they sent the baby away to find out it had DOWn S. aldomet worked very well. I had to keep upping my dosage throughout my pregnancy, and go on bed rest. HBP is bad and even worse when you are preggo. Since i had my baby it has gone back to a high.normal. Stay healthy, avoid stress and all that stuff. Its good to ckange medications and get the old out of your system!! GL
