How severe is this anemia? What could cause this?

by sweetbean, Mar 12, 2007 12:00AM
I am wondering how severe my anemia is and if my blood tests give any other clues as to what is going on..... new here so not sure where to post this question......

Here are my numbers that are my main concern:
Ferritin, Serum 5 (normal 10-291)
Iron, Serum 4 (15-55)
Iron Saturation 234 (100-250)
TIBC 531 (250-450)
Sedimentation rate 40 (0-20)
Reticulocyte Count 2.7 (0.5-3.0)
My BMP is basically normal.
As far as CBC - most are low (MCV, MCH, MCHC, MPV and Mono%). Hemoglobin is 8.5 (12.3-15.3; Hematocrit 29.4 (36-45)
RDW and Platelet count are high.

I had 3 major surgeries last year, but none, per surgeons, caused significant blood loss. I am not getting my period, though still in my 30's..... probably related to my surgery (pituitary).

There are so many types of anemia and possible related diseases... I'd like a little help to research the correct areas until I get back to see my Dr. I am on 3 iron pills a day now. Very fatigued. ANY input (good or bad) is very much appreciated. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not a doctor so will not try to interpret your results. However, I suffered from severe iron-deficient anemia and was so weak I could not even sit up in bed. To my horror, I even had to be carried to the bathroom. It took a full three weeks of treatment before I even started to feel better so give it time, you may start to see improvement in a little while. Hope you feel better soon...
