How soon can I test?!!

by his_sweetness, Mar 11, 2008 05:53PM
I had my IUD removed on 02/29 and have had unprotected sex since then.  I am getting ready to get measured for a diaphragm in a couple days.  I'm starting to wonder if I could be pregnant but if I was would it even show up yet if I was to take a test today?  I feel a lil tired and more hungry than usual and my nipples are just a tad sore and when I tried to squeeze them a lil bit of milk came out, and also I had some slight brown spotting today, not much though....ahhhh, so what should I do? Wait it out a lil longer and see how things go? I have no idea when I'm suppose to expect a period as they have been so irregular.

Please any advice...

Most pregnancy tests can give you an accurate result from the day your period is due, some can tell upto 4 days earlier, but of course you say you don't know when your period is due. However, if you were to have got pregnant when you had the sex you would have had to have been ovulating when you had it, or up to 5 days after (as sperm can stay alive inside your body for upto five days.) Your period comes approx 14 days after ovulation, so if you can calculate the exact date when you had the unprotected sex, you should get an accurate test result somewhere between 14-19 days after you had it,-maybe a little earlier if it's a test that can detect 4 days earlier, such as first response. Hope this helps and all the best to you :)

Thank you for your response wickedsazzi.  After I thought about a lil while I realized I did actually stop bleeding on Feb 26th, from what I assume was a long period before I had my IUD taken out on Feb 29th.   Feb 26th was the last day of bleeding I think.  I remember her saying the my cervix would still be open on the 29th.  Anyway, I don't know if I count that as a period, it lasted about 13 days, ugghh...that's all I can go by because like I said they have been so irregular while on the IUD.  Also, I bled for about 3 days after removal of the IUD but I don't think that was an actual period, though I don't know for sure...my doc wasn't very helpful.  So if I did finish my period on the 26th how would I know when I am suppose to ovulate?? As it was a very long period and would have no idea when ovulation is taking place...I am lost..I just don't know if I should test yet?? I hate to waste 20 dollars, I know that sounds terrible but it's true...

Hmm yeah, it's very difficult to say when you should have ovulated this month if you're quite irregular. Most typically, if you count the FIRST day of your period as day one (it's easier to speak in terms of the first day of your last period than the last day in this case I think,) then ovulation would happen around 14 days after that, but you say your last period lasted about 13 days so this might not be the case, really hard to know sadly (my period's irregular lately too, I know the frustration haha.) However, if your IUD was removed on the 29th Feb as you say, and the unprotected sex you had occurred was after this, then that's less than 14 days since it happened. Even though you don't know when your ovulation would have been this month, you know that you would have had to have been ovulating when the unprotected sex happened, and a pregnancy test will typically show up a positive result 14 days after ovulation because had you been ovulating, that's around when your period would have been due. I hope you understand what I mean, I'm finding it hard to explain so I'm preobably confusing you even more! In short, if you were to have got pregnant from the unprotected sex, you would have had to have been ovulating at the time or 5 days after, thus a HPT would be most likely to pick up the positive result around 14 days+ after this if there was one to be had. So it's only worth testing 14 days+ after the intercourse happened really, and as you had the IUD removed on the 29th and we are on, the...11th March? You shouldn't need to just yet. Try to remember the date of the first unprotected intercourse and do your first test 14-19 days after when this was! Haha! I hope I haven't totally muddled you!

I do know what you're saying!  And I thought it would be too soon today if I tried to test as it has been 11 days since we had unprotected sex (had sex that evening of the 29th..bad, bad I know..LOL.)  Anyway, so I should wait til Friday I guess to do the test or maybe even wait longer.  I'm getting measured for an IUD tomorrow so hopefully I'm not too late on that, haha.  We will see...

Thank you so much, you have helped me out a lot! I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
